Recently, especially after watching Sal Piacente's 4-5-6 Packet Trick, I've become interested in effects where the spectator only thinks of a card, as opposed to naming one or picking one, and the magician reveals it. Below, I list such effects that I've come across. Strong effects of this exact kind are not many but can be very powerful, so I was hoping others who have an interest in them can share effects they have encountered, along with the source (book/DVD) containing the presentation/explanation hopefully.
4-5-6 Packet Trick Sal Piacente - Expert Card Magic Lecture Notes Volume 2 (DVD) -gets powerful reactions Devastation Geoff Williams - Miracles for Mortals Volume 2 (DVD) -a bit similar in concept to Piacente's effect; this is pretty good too but the routining is not as powerful, IMO Mindpower/Radar/Koran decks -each different from the other -can't be fully examined however -some pumping might be required 21-card trick -several interesting variants (including Marlo's minimal version) are discussed here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=2 [Of course, there's also Vernon's Out of sight out of mind, which is terrific but doesn't fit the exact criteria (because the card has to be named before the revelation), so I'm leaving it out.] In this category, Devin Knight is coming out with Foresight (http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=218), which sounds almost too good to be true, but it has yet to be released. Not many, so... any others?? |

While the exact method of only thinking of a card can be powerful, I also think the performer's presentation goes the furthest to improve reactions. You can have a card very simply selected from the deck and just returned without a fuss. Once this initial phase is completed, then you can emphasize in your presentation that the card is being thought of, and later, even get away with the notion that the card was only thought of. The examples I'm speaking of work very well in mentalism presentations with a full deck stack.

In Out of Sight, Out of Mind, you can use a verbal elimination procedure so that you can name the card before the spectator names it. It amounts to adding a layer of information-gathering.
By the way, if you've memorized the setup, you can name the card without ever seeing the card faces. Remember, it's the effect that matters. If you can switch in a prepared deck after a trick or two in which spectators have shuffled and freely handled a deck, they won't miss the opportunity to shuffle the deck in this trick. |

As jasons_mind said, if you emphasize that the card has been thought of (when in fact they just peeked at it for example) they might later remember that they really just thought of one.
For a nice impromptu and completely SELF-WORKING method of revealing the thought of card from a FULL deck (yes, the effect really starts with magician saying: "Think of a card, any card") you might want to check an affect Think of Any Card from The Last Word on Cards by Rufus Steele. |

Jean-Jacques Sanvert (on his Best Of Vol.4) discusses a strategy he uses when a spectator says: "I am thinking of a card. Find it." Actually he retells the encounter with an arabian sheik in monaco who took the deck from his hands, showed a card to his wives (lucky arabians), slammed the deck on the table and shouted: "Find it!" Sanvert would then go through the cards and put one on the table. Most likely it will not be the spectators card. After the spectator named his card Sanvert would say something like: "Oh, the 4 of hearts. Well, I couldn't find that because that one is in my pocket." Thus taking the card out of his pocket. I'm sure everybody can work out a method that fits him best. The interesting part is the analysis of the spectators behaviour if he's really heckling you. If that is the case he would lie even if it was the correct card. The only way to force him to name a card is to place one down on the the table because then in order to prove that you failed he has to name one.
I am aware that the initial premise was that the spectator does not name (or take out) his card, only thinks of it, but if it comes to the revelation of the card the normal procedure we apply (for good dramatical reasons) is that we commit ourselves to a card and let the spectator name it before we show it to everybody anyway. |

I would have to go with A. Elmsley's Brownwave... the spectator merely looks at the fanned deck and thinks of a card. You are then able to find the card and reverse it while behind your back. Magician's usually say nice force but there is no force. [G]
Always kills the spectators. |

When it comes to "think of a card" type tricks...hard to beat "Tossed Out Deck"...it works well for me!
Concerning Histed Heisted...Aronson's version is good...just too much mental work for the real world. I much prefer Mike Powers version of this from his book 'Power Plays'...It's called "Heisting Histed Heisted". No memorization and VERY easy! (Actually the entire book is pure gold...filled with tons of commercial magic and several 'magician foolers'...if you are into that sort of thing!) I have a version that I am working on based on Mike's work...I think I'll call mine "Heisting Histeds Heisting Histed Heisted". ;-) Cody S. Fisher

I don't mind the mental work for Histed Heisted, but if you're in a situation where you can do a d__k s___ch, it becomes easier--and even better!
Another spectator can read off the cards--it's almost as if the magician never touched the deck. Hey, no one mentioned the Princess Card Trick, or its derivations, e.g. the first part of Aronson's Red See Passover. (Note the correct spelling of the effect's name ) |

Larry Becker's "Power of Suggestion" from his Stunners Plus book.
EFFECT: The spectator shuffles a deck of cards and thinks of a number and the card that lies at that number. Nothing is said out loud. Nothing is written. No force. Magician's head is turned the entire time. Phase I: The performer, through the "power of suggestion", causes the spectator to no longer be able to see their thought of card anymore. With no palming whatsoever, the performer slowly and clearly shows the faces of the cards, one at a time, to the spectator, going through the deck handing them the cards as you do so. Their thought of card, which they clearly saw just seconds before, is no longer visible to them because you have "hypnotized" them and made it "invisible" to their eyes. Phase II: Then the performer names the spectator's thought of card! No equivoque. No pumping. No elimination. One card only is named. It will always be the spectator's thought of card the first time, every time. Phase III: The effect ends with the cards in the spectator's hands as you bring them out of their "trance" so they can go through the deck to verify that they can now see their thought of card is still in the deck, which is in their hands. This thought of card is now upside down in the deck.

It depends on what you mean by "thinking" of a card - if by "thinking" you mean "seeing but not taking from the deck", then:
John Bannon has a couple that come to mind: "Timely Departure" from Smoke & Mirrors (i only recently read this one and it sounds very cool - haven't tried it yet though), and some stuff in the front of Dear Mr Fantasy (can't recall the name but it involves something credited to Steve Draun). There's stuff in the Fechter book that could help to accomplish what you're looking for depending on how you want to go about the selection process. The book Roger's Thesaurus has what I would say is an advanced chapter devoted to this sort of thing. I would think that seeing someone who can do this would be as close as you can get. R.Paul Wilson: "Out of your mind" comes to mind. Mark Mason's dvd has a Think a card thing on it along these lines too. Then there's the section in the big blue Tamariz book where he says (paraphrased) "if you only learn to do one thing, this is it - now put the book down and go do it", or something to that effect.

I think it is difficult to get a lot from all the suggestions that are just the title of an effect. One then has to spend maybe $50 on each just to learn what it's about.

The Power Of Suggestion in Larry Becker's Stunners is indeed an excellent mental card effect. Mr Becker says in the May 1991 issue of the Linking Ring was an effect entitled "Anti-Clock Location," by George F. Miller. Mr Becker said that it was the best effects ever to appear in the Linking Ring. I bought a box containing some old issues of the Linking Ring at a magic auction and I was amazed that it had that particular issue in it. Anyway, long story short, if you have the Stunner's book, try The Power Of Suggestion on a layman and watch their jaws drop. It is so much fun to perfom it. It's a gem. I love mental card effects. Thank you Mr Larry Becker.

How about the invisible deal by derren Brown? They even have to imagine a whole deck at the beginning.

I checked out Histed Heisted recommended above. It's terrific. I HIGHLY recommend this; there are also tons of other great effects (and Simon Aronson's clever insights) in the same book, Bound to Please.
Another effect to add to the "spec thinks of card, never names it" genre is the effect 'Simon Eyes' from the book "The Aronson Approach". It's brilliant - amazing how Simon must have come up with the idea. You have two spectators think of two cards, then make some statements (all correct) about their cards (note - no fishing; you only make correct statements about their cards), then you reveal their cards. |

My friend ROGER CROSTHWAITE is one of the pioneers of "Think A Card". He fans the deck and after the spectator just THINKS of one - Roger names (or produces) it!
