Another new ebook from one of the most creative thinkers in magic. I just downloaded and haven't yet read it, but based on everything else Tom has released this is sure to be another exceptionally rewarding purchase.

ABSTRACT PASSIONS
by Tom Stone
$15 (ebook)

Mostly a book filled with brilliant ideas and their potential, often brilliant, solutions. The performance theory and bits of wisdom shared throughout are, to some degree, more valuable than any of the “tricks” you’ll learn along the way. Consider this statement for a moment, as it is saying quite a lot, given the caliber of the material you WILL learn along the way. Yes, Tom Stone is clearly one of the most creative thinkers of our generation and I have every confidence that this will be more firmly proven over time, as his releases gain a wider audience and his genius is more fully realized.

1. Brutus’ Gift:
Tom refers to this item as an unfinished idea (much like the majority of items in this book) for which he has no concrete solution. Nonetheless, he then provides multiple solutions for props and methods, all of which are tangibly clever and carefully thought out. This one item is worth many times the price of the book. Genius!!

2. Eggs From Bombay:
An item he created with another performer in mind. This is a truly brilliant routine with relatively minimalist props and virtually no sleight of hand involved. I’ve often wondered why egg magic isn’t more popular, especially given the exceptional work of Donato Colucci’s Encyclopedia of Egg Magic (what a terrific book!!). This is the caliber of routine that wins competitive championships.

3. Cognitive Color Change:
Several outcomes exist in this color change. Difficult to accurately describe without outlining all possible outcomes. Suffice to say that Tom has been tipped to it’s similarities to Paul Harris’s Amnesia Deck Switch. Does the spectator name a card, then touch the back of a card that ends up being the named card? Does the spectator choose a color (red or blue) and then find the back of the selected card is the only card from a pack to reflect the chosen color? Does the entire deck change color? Hmmm…

4. Kamikaze Cuffing:
A two-coin vanish that works (by Tom’s estimation) 7 or 8 times out of 10. Credit is given to Bobo’s New Modern Coin Magic, with regard to inspiration.

5. Well-Timed Miracle:
A spectator is handed a stop-watch attached to a coin purse via a small, thin string or chain. The spectator starts the watch and then stops it sometime within a minute. Whatever number the second had shows as the number of seconds passed is used to count down from the top of the deck. When the number is arrived at, the card is turned over, revealing a selection from the deck. The spectator is instructed to open the coin purse, within which she finds a folded prediction card. When the prediction is unfolded it is seen to match the randomly selected card. This is a brilliant use of a deck that you most likely already own. One read through of this routine and that deck will gather no more dust and take up no more space on you shelf. Pure gold!!

One of the things I love most about Tom Stone’s magic is that it blatantly challenges the empirical senses. Did I see what I think I saw? Did I hear what I think I heard? Did I feel what I think I felt? Did you just do what I think you just did? Etc…

If there is ever a defined successor to the footprints of Tommy Wonder (can there ever truly be??) it would come as no surprise to me to find within those prints the markings from Tom Stone’s shoes. If you have not yet discovered Tom’s work you are truly missing out on some of the most brilliant thinking of our time.

Man, I don't want something that makes me think and expand and come up with my own way. I want detail and patter so I can go perform right now!!

BTW what is the premise of Brutus Gift?

It's a very strong performance piece. My description can't do it full justice without quoting directly from the book (which I won't do). So... the bare bones description: Magician makes his (her) entrance "looking pale and worried." He (she) presents five long boxes, each with a different colored pair of gloves on top. He chooses a spectator to assist and then asks that person to select any pair of gloves. The spectator does and the magician then asks them to try on the selected pair of gloves. The gloves are a perfect fit. The magician then lifts the lids from each of the unselected boxes, each box is seen to contain a large knife with a handle that is the same color as the gloves on top. The last box opened is the one that was freely selected. It is shown to be empty. The magician slumps over the table revealing a knife in his back, the color of which matches the gloves that were selected and are now worn by the spectator.
