True to his word, Dave has released more material that is not only killer but very "real world". Once again, we are treated to six excellent effects.
While all of them are great, my personal favorite is "A Pack of Lies". No, it's not a "lie decector" routine. It's a vanishing hole routine. And what could have been just a little odd, quicky effect, is actually a very clever full blown routine with two amazing climaxes. This tirck alone is worth the price of the manuscript. For you guys who are fans of Dave's work, I know I'm just preaching to the chior. For those of you who don't know his work, you can't go wrong with any of his material and this booklet is no exception.

Being a fan of Dave's ACAlmostAN routine...I am happy to have these notes as well. Great material...I really like Carrots, Ok...what a strange name? A Pack of Lies is also very interesting...

I wanted to post this review two days ago, right when the Café crashed. well, so here it is now:
--- I like david's magic. whenever he releases something, I buy it. I don't need reviews, I know it's good. Four Found Fast - An extremely visual yet relatively easy production of four of a kind. While it looks very flash and impressive, technically, it’s an absolute breeze! hmm. I'm not a big fan of flashy four-of-a-kind-productions. there's always some setup involved which you can't achieve during a routine. that's why I liked "royale with threes" or "missing the aces" from vol.1 where the production is built into a routine. so this is some kind of opener. I doubt I'll ever use it, but some others might like it. it's really easy to do and looks good. 7/10 No Hassle Hof - An eye-popping handling of ‘The Hofzinser Ace Problem’. This is cool, visual card magic that you’ll start using immediately! i already have my favourite hofzinser ace routine. this one doesn't change my opinion. but it's a great routine, straight to the point and not difficult. what happens exactly? one of the four kings invisibly turns over to reveal the suit of a spectator's selection. then it visibly changes into the spectator's selection. 8/10 Carrots, Ok? - A close up ‘psychometry’ routine - you always know who holds the odd coin. This is an almost impromptu miniature mentalism act in and of itself. you will need a gimmick for this. you might already have it. many magicians do. very clever idea. practically no skill except showmanship is required to do the routine. you know which person has the odd coin before the last coin is taken out of the card box (no, the card box is not gimmicked into a change bag or something). 9/10 A Pack of Lies - A very wierd effect! During the course of an ‘expose’, you somehow cause a large hole in the card case to completely disappear! The clever gimmick makes it practically self working! alright, whenever a forrest-trick is achieved with a gimmick, I know it's worth more than I have paid for the manuscript. just think of card thru window, route 1, trap-ease, holy moly or seal the deal (fandango 1). this guy is ingenious. just like this trick. I haven't built the gimmick yet but I already know the trick will cause killer reactions. best of all: david has built a routine around it, so it's not only "here's the hole. now it's gone." the hole fulfills a purpose. there's a card glimpse built into the trick that I'll definitely use seperately. 10/10 No. Way - A card vanishes and reappears at a position in the deck named by the spectator. The reactions are out of this world. A good example of card magic designed with real people in mind. at first I thought "no way" when I was reading the pages. the routine is quite easy to do until you reach a point where I thought you need a car crash right next to you to cover the move. then I stepped in front of a mirror: it can be done nearly invisibly. do you know paul Harris' bizarre vanish? do you like it? I do. this card vanish is just as visual. what happens exactly? the 4 kings are removed, a card is selected and placed in between the kings. another card is left protruding out of the deck. you show the selection between the kings and in an attempt to palm it, it simply vanishes. you just have 4 kings in your hand. no sticky stuff. the card protruding from the deck is now the selection. dave uses an awkward move in here to force a card (he introduced it in fandango 1). I don't like it here. it was justified by the routine in vol. 1, here it isn't. it can be achieved easier. 9/10 Trans-four - Four Kings appear in a spectators own hands. An absolute stunner that can stand alone as a dynamite card effect or is the perfect lead in to a more involved routine. i love this effect. what happens exactly? the red aces are placed onto the spectator's palm and a selection is sandwiched between them. at the end (which is basically before the trick hasn't even begun ... I love those 10 steps ahead tricks!) the selection appears sandwiched between the red aces in the deck and the spectator holds the 4 kings. since all the dirty work is done without any heat, the trick is really easy.10/10 mean: 8,8, that would be a 9 ... but there are some grammatical errors in the ebook ... sentences that don't make sense. not may though, but they are there. so I would say a 8,5/10 would be justified. you'll get more than your money's worth from this ebook, if you are a beginner (every sleight is well described ... no knucklebusting stuff like passes or culling (although culling could be useful for some routines)) or an intermediate magician. I can't talk for pros since I'm not one of them. --- |

Seems my initial review was lost. But for the record, here are my thoughts.
I know some may think I'm biased but I can honestly tell you that I've been a fan of Dave's work way before I started doing business with him. His material is always excellent and this booklet is no exception. Four Found Fast - An extremely visual yet relatively easy production of four of a kind. While it looks very flash and impressive, technically, it’s an absolute breeze! This is a very easy and very effective production of four of a kind. I like it because it looks very flashy but isn't knuckle busting. And for clumsy people like me, that's a good thing! No Hassle Hof - An eye-popping handling of ‘The Hofzinser Ace Problem’. This is cool, visual card magic that you’ll start using immediately! Highly visual. Dave writes in the intro that he thinks this will be a favorite of most who read the booklet. I agree. Great version of the Hofzinser Ace Problem. Carrots, Ok? - A close up ‘psychometry’ routine - you always know who holds the odd coin. This is an almost impromptu miniature mentalism act in and of itself. Reads great. I can't say much about it as I do not have the necessary thing you need to perform the effect. However most magicians probably do have one of these. A Pack of Lies - A very wierd effect! During the course of an ‘expose’, you somehow cause a large hole in the card case to completely disappear! The clever gimmick makes it practically self working! I think Dave could have sold this as a separate item. A wonderful routine. The gimmick, as with all of Dave's gimmicks, is so darn cool. No. Way - A card vanishes and reappears at a position in the deck named by the spectator. The reactions are out of this world. A good example of card magic designed with real people in mind. I love this routine. My kind of magic. Dave uses a common move that most of us do, usually during Ambitious Card, in a silghtly different way that really got me thinking. Trans-four - Four Kings appear in a spectators own hands. An absolute stunner that can stand alone as a dynamite card effect or is the perfect lead in to a more involved routine. One of those great effects that magicians will love doing and spectators will love to experience. Very magical. As with all of Dave's stuff, the routines are truly real world and utilize common sleights that most of us know. Everything is explained very well making it easy to learn. With all of the lame stuff out there, this is definitely a breath of fresh air. No pipe dreams or "concepts" (I'm getting sick of paying for ebooks that are just full of "ideas"). Just strong, commercial magic.

Yet another wonderful Dave Forrest release and once again I'll be adding several more routines to my repertoire. I once told Dave that I probably use more of his material than that of any other magician. With the release of Fandango 2, it just goes on!
Dave told me about "Pack of Lies" a few months ago and I thought back then it was fantastic. I even mentioned to Dave at the time, that it was possibly TOO good to give away. I'm sad to say he didn't listen to me and that is very much to your advantage as it's truly an outstanding routine that is guaranteed to fool everyone. Dave, you are waaaaaaay too generous! Iain. |
