Did anybody watch college football this weekend? Lou Holtz was on there during halftime and performed a torn and restored newspaper routine during his game talk. Did a pretty good job of it, actually!

During the OU/Texas game, they showed a nicely made illusion at the fair just outside of the stadium. Kinda like the head on table illusion, but this guy was cut in half at the waist and perched up on a pole.... kinda looked like a corndog. People stood there and stared for long periods of time.
I built a head on table 10 years ago. Still one of my favorite optical illusions...was really impressed with the one they showed at the game! |

Lou Holtz has been doing the Gene Anderson tear for more than 25 years. A magic shop owner in Arkansas used to make them up for him and send them to him 12 at a time. Holtz also did this on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson years ago.

Lou Holtz taught me my first Prof. Nightmare moves in the 60's in North Carolina.
He was a magician in my mind. I only later found out about his Coaching sideline. |

He use to coach at USC. I worked with him here in Columbia, he actually has been doing magic a long time. He uses simple tricks like the T&R newspaper, what's next, and other props for motivational speaking and when he talks to players. Nice guy.

Less anyone forgets, Lou Holtz was an alum of Kent State University.
He has been doing magic for years. When I worked newspaper, I ended up taking photos of his appearance on campus. What a dynamic speaker! I have heard several (Woody Hayes, A. Paresegan ) but nothing like Lou. I gave him one of my business cards with the magic logo and he wrote a nice letter afterwards. A nice touch. He is a class guy. He made this appearance when he was coaching at Notre Dame. He drove down for this appearance (because he had promised) and drove right back that night to be there for his daughter's graduation. That is class and keeping things in the proper perspective. Richard

He always says that it's his first time doing the T&R, but he's done it for years ...

This is hardly a new career for Lou Holtz. He was performing this trick when I met him in 1979. (Johnny Carson)
