Yes... the escapes were horrible.
And one of them was the feamle magician of the year, and it stunk.
I didn't like that.

She's locked in a bus and it's filled with jet fuel, I think they said.
Which is dumb. Jet fuel doesn't burn like gas, which is what it was.
Any way... she's struggling to get loose... uh oh! The fire is coming.
She's got one hand free... now she's got it... uh oh. she's on fire.
She comes running out and some guys with fire extinguishers come running up and blast her.
But wait!! She's not there... ahhh... she's the one with the fire extinguisher.
Wow... never seen that before!! Smile

But it was nice to see Kristen Lambert.
She was cute.
Pretty standard stuff, but did pretty good.

I was REALLY disappointed in this show. I was taped it and was watching it with a friend this afternoon. Krysin was probably the highlight for me. She's got a cool act, but they cut one of the most original parts. Andrew Goldenhersh was only given about 40 seconds, and that is a sin. Arthur Traces's wonderful act was RUINED by some really crappy music, (maybe they couldn't get the rights to what he normally uses.) Mac was also great doing his goldfish catching act. Pamela Anderson as best magicians assistant? That is an INSULT to all the hard working women AND MEN who work as magicians assistants. She does about 20 min on stage during an act that was ALREADY CANCELLED before this show could air. What a freakin' joke.

This "magic special" made me realize on very important thing. I MISS GARY OULETT.

Not that this would matter to anyone but me (I'm a dangerous goods specialist for FedEx, and this is the stuff I deal with every night)...the girl in the flaming bus should have a professional oversee the "set decoration" better. The large 55-gallon drums in the bus were labelled with a big red sticker that said "flammable gas" and had a "2" on the bottom of the label. That label is for a 2.1 flammable gas container...that means a GASEOUS flammable substance and not a liquid. Just thought that was funny from a professional point of view.

And...she was boring.

Not to mention all 3 escapes were filled with cuts. The best one was Ray Pierce. But they should not have booked 2 who utilized a switch at the end.

I'm sorry to beat a dead horse, but I had an idea. Pam's award should be renamed "Biggest fake breasts we could squeeze into a wedge base."

Thank you, good night!

Of the many great assistants in the magic world, how is it that Pamsla Anderson won. Are the judges male magicians or lay persons??

The judges are the TV producers who pick who ever they want. This show has no real affiliation with IBM, SAM, FISM, or even the AMA. Gay Blackstone did appear and make a little speach, and she was listed as executive producer. MAYBE she had something to do with this train wreck. I nominate Pam Thompson for the real Best Assistant award.

World Magic Awards '07
Hosted by: Roger Moore
Presenters: Neil Patrick Harris, Lance Burton, P&T, Steve Valentine, Joan Collins, and others.

Best Illusionist: Rick Thomas
Performed: Motorcycle Production, Shrinking Tiger Illusion, Double Tiger Production from Hanging Cages
Rick could've brought a nice bang to the start of the show, but I thought it was a bit slow. After the Motorcycle Production, which some could've missed, and the Shrinking Tiger Illusion, where an adult white tiger "shrunk" to a Bengal tiger cub (white tiger cubs aren't always available Smile), Rick led the cub down an aisle for about a minute and a half while the stage was reset for the Double Tiger Production. He also apparently thought it was funny to scare an audience member, who already looked scared of the cub, by asking if she'd like to pet it and then loudly growling and jetting the cub towards her as she extended her hand. I'd seen him do this before, and I didn't find it funny then either. Smile

Best Classic Magic - Jason Byrne
Performed: Dove Act
This was basically the same dove act he performed on The World's Greatest Magic 2, but instead of a duck production at the end, he produced a Macaw. He seemed slow in parts and rushed in others to keep time with the music, so I'm not sure if he was using his usual track (it wasn't the same music as on WGM2).

Best Cabaret Magic by a Duo - David & Dania
Performed: QuickChange Act

Best Comedy Illusionist - Kevin James
Performed: Chaplin Doll Illusion, Sawing in Half

Comedy Magician of the Year - Mac King
Performed: Aerial Fishing, Vanishing Head in Paper Sack

Best Close-Up Magic - Andrew Goldenhersh
Performed: 2 Coin Production, Rabbit from Hair Production

Best Cabaret Magic by a Female - Luna Shimada
Performed: Parasol Act (shortened)

Best Teen Magician - Krystyn Lambert
Performed: Linking Rings with Lean, Rabbit Production

Best Stage Magic - Ray Pierce
Performed: Escape Illusion
I'm not sure what he calls it, but it was an escape illusion. I won't describe it, in case you haven't seen it.

Best Cabaret Magic by a Male - Arthur Trace
Performed: PostModern Art Act
I hadn't seen this act before, so I'm not sure if it was shortened. It was well done, but they showed a close-up shot of his hand at the moment they shouldn't have.

Best Original Contemporary Magic - Tony Chapek
Performed: interactive magic with a TV screen
I liked this act, especially the silk vanish part, but I'd seen this type of thing before (most notably Marco Tempest) so I don't know how "original" it was. To me, it would be like saying someone who created a new card trick or dove production was being "original". I'm not criticizing anyone, BTW, just stuck on that word, I guess.

Best International Female - Mai Wynn
Performed: Exploding Bus Escape Illusion
The highlight for me was them bringing Erik Estrada on to legitimize the cuffs. That was great! Smile

Best Escape Artist - David Merlini
Performed: ?
I must've missed something when I watched this. From what I got of it, they froze him in a block of ice and then he "escaped" by having them cut him out of it. I guess he "escaped" from death? Smile

Blackstone Award
Presented to: Larry & Frances Jones - founders of Feed the Children

Magician of the Year - Hans Klok
Assistant of the Year - Pamela Anderson

Performed: Fire Cage, Suspended Animation, Slicer, Metamorphosis with what looked like a giant hat box (name?), Fire Spiker, Airtime (double lev)
This was nicely done, but I don't think they needed to do two Metamorphosis-type illusions. And if they were to show Pam as "Assistant of the Year", it didn't work. All she did was the kicker to the Fire Spiker and then Airtime. Even the family I watched it with couldn't believe she got the award. "That other girl was great and did a lot more than her." (That's a direct quote.) They also didn't like how the levitation didn't look real. Pam hung there like an upside-down "U", as if her stomach was levitating and the rest of her body was along for the ride.

For the most part, the show and the acts were good. There were a few hiccups, but nothing particularly major. I do have a beef with the editing, though. There were way too many audience-reaction and wide-angle cuts, and it actually took away from the manip acts because, by the time they cut back, the performer would sometimes already be partly into another effect. They could've also started with a bigger bang to draw the viewing audience's attention. If I were a layperson who wasn't that interested in magic, I don't think I would've continued watching after the first few minutes. Maybe I've been spoiled by growing up watching Gary Ouellet specials....?

I had read that Jim Karol was "Mentalist of the Year" and was supposed to perform, but he wasn't on the program.

I'll also agree that I wasn't too impressed with the show. What could have been good was, IMHO, full of extremely bad camera work and editing. The guys in the editing room obviously knew nothing about magic, and they sent out the finished product containing things like wide shots when Jason Byrne was doing something really cool with his hands (his yo-yo bit). I didn't quite "get" the escape pieces either. Was there really any suspense there? I miss Gary as well, and it would also be great to see DC put out another decent show!

Even my wife, who doesn't watch much magic, scoffed at Pamela Anderson being "Assistant of the Year", considering she didn't even show up for most of Hans' act. I'm guessing, but I think they needed to give her that award, or she (and possibly Hans) wouldn't have shown up.

I generally dislike shows of this type because it doesn't give the performer time to establish his personality and gain rapport with his audience. This was no exception. Lots of magic, very little entertainment.

I get why Ms. Anderson won. While I certainly could think of those that are more deserving of that title, I do get it. She's a big name that has garnered media attention and ticket sales for magic that wouldn't have been there otherwise. She also stepped up to the plate when Carmen Electra exited, which I'm sure others wouldn't have even considered doing. So I get why she won, and I applaud her for what she's done for magic. I just thought it was interesting what others around me had said, which is why I included what had been said above.

I received the DVD 2 days back, thanks Ken for your Christmas present! Smile

Really love the show....but just curious about a question:

I watched my idol: Jason Byrne's amazing bird act again & again; however this time, his steal is not as smooth as 12 years back in 1995 on WGM2...not too sure if the first dove flew away affected his mood for the entire act.

Hence just curious if this the same Full bird act he performed in V variety show in Aladdin Hotel (Las Vegas) nightly

Or he performed something else at Aladdin

& this bird act on the TV show, he only perform it occasionally only.

Anyway I still enjoyed his charisma, his showmanship is amazing, and one of the best I have seen! Smile
