I was wondering if someone could give me their thoughts on this book. I am interested in getting this book because I have been told that the effects come closest to the ones in Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment. I love the AoA series and am looking for something in the same vein. Am I looking in the right place?

You can't go wrong with John Bannon. "Smoke & Mirrors" is one of my favorite books on magic. Lots of workable stuff and it'll get you thinking. You should take "Impossibilia" into consideration as well.
Thought: Why does man kill? He kills for food. And not only food: frequently there must be a beverage.

If you use the "Search" function on this site, you should be able to find a lot of reviews on this book. Many of these reviews list Smoke and Mirrors as one of the best magic books available at least as a personal favorite of the reviewers. It is worth buying.

Don't think about just buy it, John Bannon is my favourite author and smoke and mirrors is his best book - followed closely by Bannon's impossibilia. Personally I rate both these books over Harris's art of atonishment series - and that takes some beating.

Intermediate. a beginner can pick it up but wont get much use out of it...you need to be able to handle cards and coins well and though the sleights aren't complicated, to succssfully pull off the tricks you have to be smooth and that requires a level of competence with cards. good luck finding a copy though.

Good buy.Smoke and Mirrors is a very good book.Get the video as well.I bought the book and was slightly dissapointed(the hype of this book was incredible-some said it was better than Art of...).It's not better but has lots of good stuff in it.I've grown more fond of it,as I tried the effects on my wife and friends. As for the level,I would classify it as intermediate(about the same class as Art...).
Enjoy your new read. Andre ajcombri@telkomsa.net |

I agree and disagree. the art of astonishment are great volumes. I think 1 is by far the best of the three. however smoke and mirrors have more effects that I use in my repertoire. the effects are more baffling and are well thought out. for a great read and a ton of tricks some of which you will use, most of which you wont but it is good reading...AoA. For a good read with a lot of great thinking and half the tricks you will use...Smoke and Mirrors
