Speaking as somebody living in the UK - where the TV magic scene, last time I checked, is dominated by Derren Brown, David Blaine, Paul Zenon, Jerry Sadowitz, the boys from Monkey Magic and the ghost of Tommy Cooper - I am not too familiar with Angel's work, probably because I don't have satellite or cable TV.
He's been shown very late at night a couple of times on terrestrial TV. But that's it. And I've seen him on Phenomenon. So, apart from being arrogant, why do people hate him? I understand he exposes effects. Could anyone provide more detail on this please - and any other reasons why I should dislike him? Just curious - and it will help me have some time outside the Café!

Go to youtube.com and search for him to see his work. The problem with him is his over use of camera tricks and stooges. He thinks that he is the "greatest magician in the world" and it has really gotten to his head. He is just "stylish" but he doesn't really have much talent as a magician. He has changed the image of magic (sometimes for the better) but at the end of the day- no magician can match the power of a TV studio. How can we compete with that? and then he prounces around like he's better than the rest of us because of his fame. He is an EXCELLENT stage magician- he should have stayed there.

I kept hearing how good he was as a stage magician and THAT was his redeeming quality until I found out that his last show was YEARS ago and his Off Broadway show was at a tiny 150 seat venue.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't hate him. I've actually been a fan of his since 1998 or thereabouts. I still admire him as a performer, but the way he has appeared to sell out to the media and disrespect his peers has really disappointed me. I'm also not happy that he has painted himself into a corner that has driven him to use techniques that are only possible on a television show. These types of effects make it much more difficult for regular live performers because we can't do effects of the same magnitude of Criss's television effects.
It seems that a lot of people forget that he had a very successful stage show in New York before he started getting television appearances. The first time I ever saw Criss perform was his Metamorphosis illusion on a documentary that I think was hosted by Harry Anderson. I want to say it was called "The Science of Magic", but it was almost 10 years ago, so I'm not certain of that. He also had a Halloween special on the ABC Family Channel and I thought it was amazing. I quickly became a fan of not only Criss' magic, but also his music. But in the last couple of years, I've seen a very negative change in Criss both as a performer and his persona. While many may disagree with me, I don't think he truly honors Houdini with his effects or photos. I don't think he respected Uri or Jim by insulting Jim and then calling them out on an entertainment program as if they were trying to swindle the audience like a pair of faith healers. I don't think he respected Jim Calahan by lying in a television interview to claim that Jim was trying to channel Criss' father to swindle Criss out of money. I don't think he's shown much respect to the other contestants on Phenomenon who I believe are every bit as talented as Criss. I don't believe he respected David Blaine with the constant chest pounding and challenges. I don't believe he respected David Blaine when he allowed a spectator saying "F$^% David Blaine" to air on one of his specials. I don't believe he respected David Copperfield by claiming "It's good to be the king" when he hasn't accomplished 1/10 of what DC has accomplished in his career. I've been careful about what I've said about Criss, not for any fear of reprisal, but because I didn't want to paint an untrue picture. I disagree with just about every aspect of Criss Angel's character in regards to his methods to performing "TV only" magic and the way he has disrespected his peers and lied about them. Yeah, I know that 99% of his act is BS, and is just his handlers way of advancing his career. Yeah, I know that 99% of every word out of his mouth and every public move that he makes is predetermined. But the fact is that Criss agreed to get famous this way. There are plenty of successful performers that didn't have to turn magic into the WWF to get there. I don't hate Criss Angel. I just decided to stop being a fan. |

It really does not matter who is #1 at any time, a big percentage of magicians are going to be "haters" of the person on top. If he had such a BIG ego as some say, do you think Johnny Thompson or Banachek would be around? Criss Angel is the only famous magician who I've seen that publicly gives credit to the team of magicians that help him.

I can't hate him. Don't know anything about him. I disliked a certain thing he pulled though. But...Golden Rule says I (with room to chastize).

My problem with Angel goes back to when he was on Howard Stern and just whined about Blaine, who I also am not a big fan of. Rather than whining he needed to go do something. It also bothers me that on his show, which I watched twice when it first started and just can't stomach any more than that, he clings to mommy and his brothers weeping over every routine. If he dumped the family I'd like him more.

I NEVER watch "Mindfreak" even though I get every channel that ever carries it. I'm by definition not a CA fan.
Having said that, I don't "hate" CA at all, he's just not my style of magic. People generally don't hate Criss Angel outside of forums like this. As a matter of fact, he's quite a big star as far as big stars go. (I'm told he's bigger than David Blaine or David Copperfield, although I disagree with that statement as in order to prove it folks usually trot out some obscure poll or percentage taken as part of a poll. In general though, if you were to ask 10,000 people I believe more would know DC and/or DB than would know CA). But to answer your question, this forum is a bit of a small tempest in a big tea pot as 99%+ of the viewers of the "fight" with Jim don't bother to analyze it any further than to think "wow, that was intense" and then move on to eating their potato chips and changing the channel to their next show. In other words, this forum and the folks that post in it are but a miniscule portion of a single percentage point in the demographic that watches CA's own show, and also the new Angel/Geller effort. There's nothing wrong with being a small vocal minority, but that doesn't change the answer to your question, which is that most people definitely don't hate Criss Angel, simply because most people don't even spend even a moment thinking about him unless they're actually sitting and watching his show on TV. Having said that, I can't stand to watch CA's show, and I find that the business currently taking place on "Phenomenon" is probably harming mentalisim as a craft, and can't be helping magic either (although it appears to be strongly benefiting Jim's career, which isn't a bad thing at all). Jim should be able to turn this into a very effective campaign, and should as a result of all of this become well known to all his potential fans. |

I don't think anyone 'really' hates Criss at all.. Hate is a powerful and overused word..
I think Criss started out on a positive foot with his 1st two specials, but I think his constant use of non magical techniques and then saying that other maicians just don't understand his superior skills will annoy most.. Also he constantly puts other magicians down like David Blaine which for me is in poor taste and displays a certain insecurity, Blaine has done nothing wrong, he has steadily built his career, made a few odd descisions along the way but ultimately he has not offended any of his peers or those that look at up to him.. Criss just seems to have a chip on is shoulder, which is crazy when you think of the success he has had. A certain amount of humbleness makes the world of difference and unforunately Criss doesn't have much of that.. I am sure he is a descent human being, I mentioned before that Marc Salem told me he was a delightful young man, but the TV persona doesn't portray that and many here can only go by what he says in the media and what he does.. I remember David Copperfield being interviewed in the UK and asked about Geller and he said "He's pretty good, yeah he is good." at no point did he feel the need to debunk him, put him down or say how much better he was.. Also the same applied to Paul Daniels talking about David Blaine who said "He is good, he is making magic quite trendy for the young viewers, he's a little odd for me but non the less he's good." Again no personal attack, no vindictive statement.. The thing that put me off Criss was when he did Submerged in Times Square at the end of the show when he came out he said and I quote "I challenge anyone in magic to do this!" you knew it was a challenge to Blaine.. A few years later Blaine performs his stunt for 7 days and then holds his breath for 6 minutes which to my mind beats angel but 6 days with an extra endurance feat at the end.. Angel's challenge was not only beaten it was sent home crying like a baby to mom.. Fast forward to Angel on a radio show.. HOST: "So what do you think of David Blaines latest stunt?" ANGEL: "I did that ages ago, I guess he's running out of ideas as he is copying me now!" NO... Quite simply he beat you with an event that captured more imagination, more people came to see and even the ITV in the UK (who very rarely put magic on) bought the rights to the two hour show and put it on prime time saturday night.. Criss is just to eager to be a legend, you don't decide to be a legend, it is for the people to decide you are a legend.. Criss has abilities and stage presents but he needs to lose the ego.. Floyd Maywhether Jnr is a great boxer but the ego and his own labeling as a legend will hinder those who could decide he is worthy of legendary status.. Just my two cents.. Spelmann
It's not goodbye, just see you later...

I have spoken to several "big names" in the industry. All of them have told me the same thing about David Blaine. They say he is really humble and a really nice guy.
The same is not said about Chris Angel. I know for a fact that Johnny Thompson was very upset with him for stealing someone elses routine and then refusing to give proper credit. Was quite a falling out. However, after walking out, and off the set, Johnny came back and agreed to continue working with him, albeit with a lot of tension. |

Thanks everyone for helping me to dislike the guy even more than I did already! I needed a new hate-figure! Just kidding. It's good to understand where people are coming from.
Obviously (or not!) when I asked why people hate CA, I meant us mentalists. I apologize for my poorly phrased question silverking. Thanks for your response.
