Actually I only see the Wrestlers backstage since I don't have time to see the matches. My agents office is right next to where they have lunch/dinner and relax during the event. My friend used to be on all of the shows in the audience He's the dude swinging the towel! They've hired him to do the pre-show now. If I ever go I'll wear the FEZ so you can see me!
If you ever make it to Orlando you should check it out :dancing:

Oh I will, I'm a full on pro werstling fan - I'll let you know if I'm going, you can show me the good blues bars! I have to buy all my shows from smartmark video (I don't bother much with wwe these days, mainly IWA, Chikara and CZW).
But the parallels between our audiences are very interesting to consider. And the varying levels of reality and fiction are fascinating. I have applied the concept to my show (Mick's theory of the real world being 'faker' than wrestling. So true...!). |

Well .. here's an update ... KAYFABE is still working for the Wrestlers and we Mentalists are still just about the same place we were two years ago when this thread started.
My friend the towel spinner has now been hired as the MC for the Pre-show. He was also the spieler for my show Supernatural Florida several years ago. KAYFABE is working for him. One of our buddies has went to Wrestling School and is now making a good living practicing KAYFABE. We really need to work on this

Just thought I would add my two cents here as I was in the wrestling business...
Kayfabe generally has been about not breaking character while in public or during one's private life, though it can apply to what is being done in the wrestling show or backstage. For the most part, however, it means not admitting that wrestling isn't a real athletic contest, not eating out with other wrestlers in your private life if it doesn't fit the story lines (as someone already mentioned), and generally being your character 24/7. This really isn't practiced any more in the industry in the U.S. Some old timers still do but very few. The audiences know what is going on. They know it is fake (and yes, it is fake, though it is athletic and painful)so more emphasis is put on the performers telling a good story in the ring and trying to get the audience to suspend disbelief during the show. On a side note, I have always thought that there is a great parallel between magic/mentalism and wrestling. With both, the trick is in creating the illusion that something is happening that isn't. Getting the audience to fall into that suspension of disbelief by telling a story with your presentation is key. To me, throwing a punch or kick in the ring is not much different than a sleight. If a mentalist was to practice Kayfabe as wrestlers used to practice it, it would be akin to what T.V. psychics like Sylvia Brown do. |

Ive also thought this for years, and as someone who was/is heavily involved in the wrestling industry and tv world for a number of years, you are spot on my friend. Even though both things are completely different, the mental approach of the performance and structure is almost the same. And if executed well ie: an AJ Styles, Johnny Saint or a Misawa, can fully suspend belief of the audience and suck you emotionally into the performance, as can a Derren Brown, Guy Hollingworth or Paul Harris! |

So that's one difference between Wrestlers and some Mentalists -- Wrestlers know that they aren't 'doing it for real'.

You are correct! Wrestlers only "pretend" to wrestle, skin suits present the illusion they have muscles, mirrors present the illusion that they are flying off the top rope, the bushwakers used a fake tongue to present the illusion that they were licking peoples faces, just like psychological illusionists present the ILLUSION that they are psychological illusionists because we know they don't really exist either!

As stated earlier, Kayfabe does not mean they live their in ring persona 24/7/365 it just means they have to stay in character in house. Randy Orton maybe a huge jack#** in the arena but outside he isn't.
As for mentalist and magicians, I think you should remain in character until the last person leaves for the night. I also think that you should be able to turn it on should you see someone in a normal setting and they want to see something magical. It all becomes part of the illusion. With that said, I have an Andrew Mayne Illusion that I perform and in order to really sell the illusion there are certain small things I do all throughout the night to send the illusion over big time. I do this so that when people are discussing it afterwards they say, and I and my wife have over heard the conversations, "No it can't be that because remember he ......." And when I have seen some of the spectators later while dining out or in the mall, I will give them a little *********** to continue selling the illusion.
Peace

Everyone is expected to stay in character during a match or during the show - that is not considered Kayfabe. Also, your post makes me think that you haven't spent much time around R. Orton |

I met him twice. Once at a show I was part of. The other at a restaurant. Seemed like a nice guy, or at least to me.
Peace.
