On Aug 17, 2018, DrTodd wrote: Thanks, that is very interesting indeed. While it's an excellent article, I have a bit of an argument with this quote: "Advances in contemporary neuroscience have formally debunked Cartesian mind/body dualism, ending, in the process, the possibility of mind reading as it has long been imagined by the public and depicted in popular culture (Moulton, 2008, pp. 182-192)" This is a quote from The Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience - an article titled "Using Neuroimaging to Resolve the Psi Debate". The authors of this article postulates that Psi, if it exists, must exist in the brain and therefore should be measurable using fMRI. I find that assumption to be problematic and ripe for confirmation bias. Further, the debunking of Cartesian dualism (which didn't need neuroscience, thanks) does not at all eliminate the possibility or even the believability of psi. The believability of psi is not at all dependent on Cartesian dualism. Radio waves are real, transmit information, but don't require Cartesian dualism to function. What if psi is a natural phenomenon somehow analogous to the electromagnetic spectrum that we have simply yet to understand. Or take the Indian philosophical notion that conscious beings are like waves in the ocean. All is water, there is no duality, only apparent duality due to the particular perspective of consciousness as we experience it from the perspective of the wave. Psi may simply be a ripple from one wave to another. No dualism required. Luckily, despite my objection to that initial statement, the paper itself is excellent and I find it extremely relevant and eye opening for the thinking performer.

Yeah, the rest of the paper is excellent. It's very thought provoking. I literally just didn't like that one paragraph, and even that doesn't affect much in terms of the premise or conclusions.

No .. I read it before I posted .. But simply starting with a faulty presupposition is an old mentalist trick ... That's what I meant ...Eric Hanussen was a great model for deception.

The paper has so many fantastic building blocks: amateur/"professional" wrestling history, timeline of Uri Gellar quotes, stand-up comedy comparisons, examples from Andy Kaufman, reality TV, fake-fake news, and so on. I need some time to think about the assumptions and conclusions, how the author makes correlations and puts all the shiny Lego pieces together. I am not sure we are entirely "post truth" nor have entirely debunked all aspects of idealism or spirituality... but many of the points are well made, well taken, and deserving of another reading.

Yeah, 'Post truth' was another thing I stumbled on. It is, nonetheless, very thought provoking.

Sorry. The time to edit ran out. This passage from page 10, just before the section on "dark play" helps mitigate my knee-jerk reaction to the opening paragraphs. Nothing in the paper actually transcends reductionist naturalism, but some phrases and references such as these might open a door or at least show tolerance for beielfs in reality beyond the physical.

I think that's a really great paper. Thanks for sharing Dr. Todd.
I took it that Dean was using the Moulton/Harvard studies to say that mind-reading doesn't exist the way it's depicted in pop-culture, etc, not to assert that it can't or doesn't exist. Which I'd agree with. I mean, just two sentences later, there's this: "This in turn, is giving rise to a new meta paradigm of wink-eye mentalism in which - in contrast to classical mentalism - the lies are less interesting than the lying." How sweet is that? That sounds about right to me. And thanks for highlighting that passage Alan. That's nice. Thanks again for sharing. Best, SS. |

I mean, it was a very fun show and pretty much everybody seemed to buy his book afterward (a pulp style crime novel about telepathy... I bought it too. It's good.) But it's hard to explain. It was out there and the audience ate it up. I've never seen anything like it in a mentalism show or otherwise (except for maybe DelGaudio's show). Honestly, even I didn't know what to make of the stuff he was doing. He was using methods that don't exist as far as I know. He stripped down to his underwear and had a committee of local celebrities search his clothing and stuff to prove he wasn't 'wearing a wire or anything' and he showed a short documentary of being strip searched by a nurse and being tested in the University labs, achieving staggering results. But the stuff he was doing... like a simultaneous drawing duplication with a randomly chosen spectator while his head was wrapped in cotton and bandage... I've never even HEARD of something like that. I felt like I was seeing Kuda Bux. I didn't know what to think. I looked him up after. He has a website. Loads of stuff there. We met over a coffee a few weeks later. He knew his stuff and was very nice. I did get the feeling I was being kayfabe-d... But it was worth it. And he paid for my coffee |

He is a very well honed and professional performer who has immersed himself. It was a pleasure to spend time with him at our Magiculum conference in Huddersfield.
