Steve...
MAN!!! We were doing so well too. Uhhh...here we go. = ) You said: >> if they want us to change the way we present our magic, well that's just customer satisfaction << I couldn't disagree more! Let's say that someone asks you to do a Magic Show but they want you to wear a clown suit (sorry Skip). Would you do it? Is it represenative of your act? If it is, then fine...but knowing what I do of you, I know it's not. Your a talanted young performer who is serious about his art. If someone wants you to be something your not, then you should tell them to hire someone else. Don't lower yourself in the name of "customer satisfaction. Once I got a phone call from a lady to do strolling magic. I booked the show. A week before the show, she called me and asked me what size I was (waste, neck, jacket, etc.). I asked why and she said she needed to get the right size clown suit for me. I told her that I wasn't a clown and that I wouldn't wear a clown suit. She told me that if I didn't wear the clown suit then she wouldn't pay me. I told her that if she wanted a clown, then she should have hired a clown...that I wasn't one and I wouldn't wear it. The end result of that story was me taking her to court for defaulting on the contract she signed. So instead of her paying my $500 fee, she had to pay $500 + court costs. When I won the case, I looked over at her and gave her a wink. BOY was she mad! Whatever... Funny thing is that if she wanted a clown, she could have hired one for FAR LESS than I charge. Funny....I still laugh when I think about it.... Bottom line...don't change WHO you are to satisify anyone! Be yourself. Posted: Nov 7, 2007 1:04pm I wanna be Mark when I grow up! Well said buddy!

A table may ask me to forgo the magic and just provide a balloon and a bit of humor...they may mention religion and they may not. Regardless, it is my pleasure to serve and honor their request with courtesy. Those rare few who get belligerent and confrontational over the issue...well, it is what it is. Grin and be glad that their not prepping for their four score and twelve virgins.

Lyle,
No problem man...let's agree to disagree. But first, let me elaborate a bit. I'm not saying dress in a clown suit, etc. I would NEVER do that either...just not my style. But, I was talking about the way we present our magic, not ourselves. Like Skip, he had to present his magic differently, by having them "imagine" stuff instead of doing "magic"...that's what I'm talking about. I would not have a problem what-so-ever doing that...after all, it's just changing a small portion of the show to make the customer happy...which is customer satisfaction after all. In short, I'm talking about the little things about what we do...if it's within reason, I would be happy to change a bit here and there to accommodate the client. Truth be told, as long as I see that money in my bank account at the end of the day, it's all good. Haha...see, no fight?? Steve |

WOW!!! If someone offered me 12 virgins, I think I would borrow Dynamike's Sponge Dong from the other thread and have a party!
Oh by the way...if you're under 21 then don't read the above. So Steve...forget you read this!

It broadens my mind and enhances my world view. Nobody wants a narrow world view. In this case, Lyle, I think you missed a concept. I think change is good within reason. It was very odd to be invited to that Harvest Fest when the pastor knew that I was a comedy magician. But, I didn't have a difficult time adjusting to the "imagination" concept and it worked. Now, had he asked me to completely forgo the "imagination/magic" format altogether or wear a goofy costume or deliver a gospel message I don't subscrbe to...well, there's the line. As you said, Lyle, you know where your line is...to that point and no further. I simply believe that as professionals, a bit of flexibility towards our clients helps us reach our goals. Prima donnas only win when they're the only ones who can do what they do. Now, about the virgins...oh...never mind. If I have to explain it...

Skip,
In your situation...I would have done the same thing with a smile. When at the gig...not much can be done. I think you handled it well! I wasn't coming down on Steve at all...just offering my opinion for whatever its worth.

Not exactly Kamm...
We had a signed contract. She told me she was cancelling the show if I didn't wear the costume. It was already BEYOND the cancellation deadline for her to get out of it and since it wasn't an act of nature that caused me not to appear, she was liable to pay me. The judge agreeed. DOAH!!! If I only thought of the rubber nose! I guess I could have brought with me a sponge ding dong but then that would be tasteless....

Seriously though, I used to always refer to myself as a sleight of hand artist but so few people really knew what that meant. It's just easier to say magician. I really don't make any claims of having supernatural powers. As it stands now, my regular working doesn't really have anyting that looks supernatural. No levitations, etc..... Except at Halloween I perform the Steranko/Hollingworth Voodoo card, with a little more mumbo jumbo thrown in. THIS thing could easily start a religion. Made several girls scream in the past 2 weeks. (For reasons other than the usual.)
