Eric, I use the Boris Wild Marked deck out of choice as it is one of the most subtly marked of the commercially available orthodox marked decks. The cards are safe in the hands of a spectator even if being riffle shuffled to my mind. However I remain a little disappointed with the fact that the markings for the jacks, queens and the kings are not better thought out.An single well disguised alphabetical letter or other symbol might have been better suited for these few cards. However perhaps this is me just being over fussy. The marked deck is admittedly a good one.
Yet the very sublety of the cards means that it is not quite as easy to see at a distance as the Ultimate marked deck is. So it is a trade off depending upon what you want.I would not think that most people would be able to see the markings of the Boris wild marked deck at over 2 feet away. Even 2 feet is pushing it for me. There is another alternative however. Expert Magician has already mentioned 'Juiced or Luminous cards'. With respect to the luminous marked cards I would not personally want to wear filtered sunglasses indoors in England this would seem perculiar. Our weather is not overly sunny either out of doors to come to think of it!. There are various commercial juices available which although they have come down in price in recent years can still seem expensive. If juicing then juice your own cards in your own way. What about also taking a look at 3D magic marked playing cards? (3d-playingcards.com if I remember rightly) I took a look at the sample card and at first I could not see a thing. However after a little bit of training it became easy for me. Just relax the focus and look through the card so to speak. As to whether the cards can be seen at a distance I do not know. However Dennis Loomis advised me that these might be worth an investigation and when it comes to marked cards and stacks he seems to know his stuff. I hope that this helps. With best wishes Andy. |

I've studied marked decks very carefully over the years and all of the ones on the market have problems. The Ted Lesley deck (and it's "Clone" the DeKram Deck) suffers from the fact that the marks are in the center of the card. To my mind, it's better to have the marks near the side so that they can be read when spreading cards from hand to hand or ribbon spreading the deck on the table.
I definitely do not like systems which make you look at different places on the card to find the mark. When lay people become aware of marked cards in use, it's not usually because they see the marks. It's because they see the magician looking at the back of the cards for a little too long. With the Boris Wild System, you do not know where the mark is going to be and you have to scan the length of the card to first find the mark, and then read it. If you are a working magician, you may or may not be able to afford the factory printed Decks. Most of them are around thirty bucks. And, you also probably won't be able to afford hand marked cards either. So, you may be well advised to adopt a system that allows you to do the marking yourself. However, I price is not object, I recommend, today, the Demon Deck which you can get from Larry Becker. It also has some problems, but it's probably the best you can get as an all around marking system. The cards look like Bikes, although they are not. Most laypeople probably won't notice the difference unless they play a lot of cards with the standard Bike Ryder Backs. The other problem is that they are not printed on the typical Bike card stock. If you like the feel of Bike's working with the Demon Deck will probably take some getting used to. It's possible yet another factory marked deck will come onto the market in 2008. If it can be done, it has been designed to eliminate the problems of the currently available marked decks, and it will contain more "power" that just a marking for suit and value. Dennis Loomis

My favourite marked deck, or as I like to call it mareked deck... Is my own marked deck. Go to the hardware store buy an awl, and stop at your favourite place to buy cards on the way.
*** The cool thing is you can use shapes or what ever kind of mark you wish. I mean there are tons of ways to mark cards, look through Expert Card Technique, goes over a few methods as far as I recall. |

Dennis is of course right about the marks having to be on the edges if you want to read from a spread. But I do a bunch of routines that use marked cards and in all of them the card is set aside or held up. For these effects, you can't beat Lesley. Very easy to read, but I've never had a spec even suspect marks - unless (s)he's keeping the suspicion to herself.
Fact is, I can't read Wild or Universal fast enough. - And the stuff you can do with the Jumbo Lesley deck... Alan |

Have any of you used a "Juice Deck"? What do you think of it? Is it hard to learn to read it?

Alan, what are some ideas you have with this? I have one of these, but haven't come up with anything I've wanted to include in a show yet. Thanks, Jeff |

Dear Dennis & Marked Deck Performers,
Comparing between Boris Wild Marked Deck and Ultimate Marked Deck, when the magician/mentalist spreading cards from hand to hand or ribbon spreading the deck on the table, which one is easier and faster to identify the value of the card? Thank you, Sam |

Ultimate Marked Deck is faster, because the marks are all located in the same place on the edge. With the BW deck, the marks could be in 4 different locations, and you have to quickly scan the entire edge to see where the mark is.

Hi jkvand,
Thanks for your explanation. 10 years ago, I remember using a mechanical pencil to poke "o" markings on four corners of the card. I performed simple Precognition effect and correctly predicted the summation of spectator's chosen cards. I can quickly scan the edges of the Top, the Bottom, or the Sides, no matter what the orientation of the card is, depending how the spectator held or placed the card. The problem with my marking is that I cannot identify the suit of the card. Regards, Sam |

To SamChak,
The fact that you can scan down the side of the card quickly is not really the issue. There is no motivation to be looking over the back of a card. (Aren't they all alike?) So, if a spectator notices you scan the card and then your eyes linger briefly on one spot, it's suspicious. With marks in one consistant location, when you have a reason to look at the deck, you can train yourself to glance right at the spot where the mark is. That's why the Ultimate Marked Deck is better. Dear Denny,
Thank you for your high opinion. It will be certainly helpful for me to select a Marked Deck based on what I want to accomplish with it. I have been wondering if I can use a Marked Deck to cull cards secretly & efficiently in order to perform some card miracles using stacked deck or special prearranged packet of cards. By the way, it is wonderful that you have done a great job to share lots of informative articles regarding The Aronson Stack in your Loomis Magic Memorized Deck Page. Thanks! I have also read lots of good reviews regarding Try The Impossible Book by Simon Aronson. Because of your passion with the Aronson Stack, if it is convenient to you, can you brief a little bit about the "gems" in this book? Thank you, Sam |

Sam,
Well, Simon Aronson opens the book with a brand new principle in card magic called Undue Influence. He gives several effects you can do with it and they are all good. I like the first one: Prior Committment. There's a great 4 Ace routine called the O'Aronson Aces. Simon's Flash Speller is a way to know, almost instantly, how many letters it takes to spell any card. So useful if you like spelling effects. Two Beginnings is a straight forward effect which shows you how to force ANY CARD with the Aronson Stack. Aces Awry is the first of several chapters on how to produce 4 of a kind with the Aronson Stack. Aces Awry is my favorite and is a very straightforward way to produce the 4 Aces when your deck is in Aronson Stack. Finally, many people have beens fans of Simon's great Draw Poker Demonstration which is built into the Stack and was explained in Bound to Please. However, the disadvantage to it was that it destroyed your stack. (Or most of the stack.) In "Routine Maintenance" in Try the Impossible, Simon has worked out a way to do it and retain your stack! These are my favorites, but there are many other great effects in the book. For Aronson Stack users, Try the Impossible is a must have. https://loomismagic.com/item4330.htm Dennis Loomis

Speaking of poker....
Here are some ideas for a gambling expose (ie. marked cards and stacking). Of course, you don't tell anyone that you are using a Juice or Luminous Deck You should just ask the audience to shuffle the deck. Then when you do the demo, you shuffle again and stack the cards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wogXJGSt7ng http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPwYXeAHHDE You can also read Juice and luminous close or from a distance vs. many other marking systems. Enjoy !

I use both Boris Wild and Ted Lesley decks. They both have a place in my routine, but I will have to take a look at the Ultimate Marked Deck.

Boris Wild deck for me is too hard to read. I try and keep going back to it but still I get messed up with the higher cards.. I think I will give Ultimate Marked Deck a try.
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

In the Ultimate Marked Deck: Are the marks easier to read in red or blue backed cards? Are they easier spotted by the spectator in the red or blues?

I have just purchased the Boris Wild deck, so I'll keep you posted with how it all works out in terms of spectator/visual interaction.

That said, I use the red deck more than the blue deck because that's the color of the regular deck that I switch out in my card routine. I prefer using a red regular deck for the earlier part of the routine because I think that there's less of a chance of flashing the back of a palmed red backed card than a blue backed card. I may be wrong in that, but using the red deck boosts my confidence in that regard, and that's reason enough for me. I don't know that the color of the deck makes the marks easier for a spectator to spot, but I'm confident that, unless the spectator has reason to suspect that you're using a marked deck, they won't spot the marks on either color deck. And even if they're suspicious, the marks are well camouflaged and are not easy to spot unless you know where to look and what you're looking for. |

Okay why is it on these "Marked Dead Threads" no one ever mentions the SUM deck. Okay it's not bikes but they are KILLER with a awesome principle built in. I too bought the "Boris Wild Marked Deck". I've been practicing with it since he's just had a great parade out in the Linking Ring. It still takes like 3-4 seconds with the cards rib high to find the card. I've seen a card from the Demon Deck, I give them a thumbs up. The only other marked deck I have is "The Dream Deck" which you need this red see through clip board. Very suspicious. I once wrote the BEST MARKED deck would work on that principle. It would come with a deck, and one or two contact lenses BUT regular color. That would kill. Could someone show me a picture od the "Ultimate Marked Deck two cards side by side like on youtube? I've seen the Lesley Deck too, very simple but I've heard people getting caught once a Magician by a group of like fourth graders. The Best, and I think gambling experts like Darwin Ortiz, and such would pick out the juice deck. You got practice with your eyes. Someone showed me one I couldn't see it. So your best bet it the SUM DECK. Most can't tell they aren't bikes, plus they have that extra feature. Ed, (Eddini), C.H.

The problem with most marked decks as a few of you have mentioned is that they are expensive.
I carry one type of marked decks in my store that has not been mentioned here: http://magicvault.net/store/index.php?ac......uctId=74 Its low cost, and the marking system is very easy to use. The markings aren't very discreet and in popular bicycle back design. Ive used this deck a number of times for some great mental effects.
