I am half way through reading this wonderful book, it is a nice companion to Maximum Entertainment. I am surprised that it is not getting more attention on the Café, it is a treasure trove of valuable informaton. It will inspire you to create more meaningful if not entertaining dialogues in your perfomance of magic.

Because with lack of knowledge on scripting and directing, I found that it is somehow difficult to read this book if you have not gone through Maximum Entertainment. Like the above said, this is a book as a companion for (M.E.)
All in all, both books really broaden my view in magic in terms of presentation, theory, and its meaning.

David Regal's script for HOTEL 52 is the BEST example of Equivoque that I have ever seen. It is genius, as is the rest of the book!

I finished "Scripting Magic" about a week ago, and I found it to be exceptionally enlightening. McCabe's POV on the benefits of scripting from the audience's perspective (i.e., script what they see, not what's actually taking place) was for me worth the price of admission. I'm certain that the impact it's already made, and will continue to make, on my magic will be significant.

I just wrote my first script using David Regal's info at the beginning of the book. I set up styles in MS Word for action, dialog etc. Once this is done you can just click the style and Word automatically uses the proper paragraph form etc. Once you have your word processor set up, you can focus on the content.
This is going to make me a much better performer. Furthermore the tricks are great too. What a great book! Mike

HI Spatlind,
I'm really liking it. I'm reading it (about page 300). The guys here were right. It is one of the best book that I have, beside Ascanio, Strong Magic, Maximum Entertainment, and Tamariz's Books. Regards

Just started this book last week, it is great so far. It has helped me to realize how I should be working out my words as carefully as I am working out my moves. I think it will be easier for me to keep my dialogue focused on message, once I manage to keep the balls, coins and cards from flying all over the place. I am a real believer that this will take years of practice to get to a performance level of any merit...I am kicking myself for not starting when I was 12.

So many goodies here. Theory, great tricks, great scripts, practical advice. What's there not to like? Okay, as others have said, it's true that there really isn't an attempt to describe a "method" of scripting--the field is still wide open for that--but this is the best magic book I've read in a long time. Don't expect Designing Miracles level of theory, but enjoy this book as a big grab bag of fun ways to play with presentation by focusing on one's script.

Really great book. didn't finish it yet but its great. However, not sure if the author really try some of his trick. His take on the Gemini Twins make no sense at all when you really try it. Great script but not logic at all. If you try it, you will understand.

I've a question. How many of you have gone from non scripting to scripting because of this book?

I do.
Just sad about the Gemini scipting. Found the scripting very good but this cannot work. He should have try it before. |
