My wife and I are both collectors of those great toys from the past, attached is our "swami napking holder" in what we call our "Art Deco" room. Its been a great addition and one of the best conversation pieces in our Art Deco room. Everyone has seen that TZ episode and love to get their penny fortunes (We estimate we have about 200 or so fortunes left)

UPDATE: Thru a stroke of luck I came across one of the original Madam X machines and it is in working order! It is being shipped to me as I am writing this post.
In addition (from a different party - see photo) I have aquired an original advertising flyer and a small quantity of the original fortunes for the machine proper. Apparently, when the flyer was mailed to prospective buyers the manufacturer included some of the actual fortunes. I will post some pictures of the machine when it arrives.

An inexpensive way to have a Fortune Teller machine is to buy a small gumball machine. Use 1" capsules and type up whatever messages you need to use, like a fortune cookie prediction.
Then to Spook up the machine, paint it Black, add Skull or Devil stickers etc. You can also place that Devil head on the top or place a sign on top also. These machines go very cheap on Ebay. It is not anywhere near as cool as a real fortune teller machine BUT this will work in a pinch. |

Wouldn´t it be cool to built a small printer inside that has a wlan connection and his own batteries? Then someone could react perfectly on the information he just got.

And, if you pop over to the Tower of Terror next door at Disney's California Adventure, there are spot-on replicas of the fortune telling device in question. Replicas? Eh, maybe they're authentic props. Enjoy the insane elevator ride...there's room for one more. Leland |

Where are the fortune-telling devices in the Tower of Terror? We were just there.
What is the color of magic?

Look towards the window before the lights dim, look up at the shelf, then towards the television before Serling begins his spiel. BTW, you may spot a replica of Talking Tina and other iconic props from the show while entering the Tower. Watch for the chalk outlines on the wall -- they're adjacent to the mezzanine loading platform.

As promised, here are some photos of the Madam X machine I recently purchased. The chrome needs to be polished but the machine does work. The plate on the front is old and faded, but as I mentioned earlier - I have an extra plate. All I need do is clean the machine a bit, replace the plate and she'll be all set and ready to go. When I received the machine it still had a small quantity of fortunes inside. So, I'm adding the other fortunes that came with the advertising flyer I purchased recently.

Steve, think about some kind of Sam the Bellhop routine with the machine, as you may arrange the fortunetelling cards in any order...
Some weird inscription may also be written or punched in one of the cards. |
