O.K., I mentioned this in one of the threads here hoping to get some kind of response and didn't get one, so I'll just ask it outright. I am one of the many frustrated searchers for "The Card Magic of Nick Trost." I have not read that book, but have read descriptions here on the Café of a trick in it called "Observation Test." I liked the sound of it, and it occurred to me that there is a very similar effect in Karl Fulves's "Self-Working Close-up Card Magic." Fulves's version is called "Reverse Colors." I have an idea that the Fulves method is basically the same as the Trost method, except for maybe what could be called the convincer move. Fulves's convincer move is very simple, I suspect simpler than Trost's must be, though it might work. I think you could also use a H**** S****** for the convincer move, as Paul Curry does in his version of the color-changing deck and as Mark Wilson does in the Complete Course in Magic. Without actually tipping Trost's exact method, can anyone tell me how close Fulves's method is to Trost's? If the answer would come too close to discussion of secrets, you could reply in "Secret Sessions," right?

I don't want to add mud here, but if you're really trying to run down the antecedents of this effect, be sure to see Bob Lotz's "Red and Blue (Improved)" in Rufus Steele's _The Last Word on Cards_, (New York: Magico Magazine, 1952), pp. 11-13.

What other methods are there for the convincer move besides that one and the very simple one Fulves gives? Posted: Feb 3, 2008 5:39pm O.K., that didn't work -- so, let's ask it THIS way: Is there anybody out there who knows both Trost's "Observation Test" and Fulves's "Reverse Colors" and has an opinion about whether Trost's trick is better than Fulves's? Are the effects themselves significantly different in any way? Is the Trost METHOD superior to the Fulves method? You don't have to tell me how Trost's trick is done -- just venture an opinion about whether it is a better trick. You can PM me if you would rather do it that way. Alternatively: give me a lead about where to find a copy of "The Card Magic of Nick Trost," new or used, that isn't vastly expensive. Thanks. |

Hushai,
Ok, I have both books and just looked up both methods. They are identical. I think if I read them side by side they will be exactly the same. You do not have to do the Hindu shuffle in either. Just follow the simple instructions and keep it simple. Trying to find The Card Magic of Nick Trost is very difficult, I have it and would not sell for anything, my favorite card book. Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......
