I've been playing with this for a while now, but it's not a performance speed yet. I've read/heard that it is "better" w/ a rainbow deck. I've got it set up that way, but I'm not convinced. I suppose it's the premise that gives me issue. If it ends up as written, changing to a red backed deck, it seems to make sense. But if all 4 cards in the packet change, "because they come from different decks," they why did the whole deck change to a rainbow? Sorry this is choppy, but those who do the trick should understand.
Thoughts appreciated. |

I know quite a bit about this effect given that I've performed the original version professionally for more than 20 years. Larry West is the originator of the premise I'm the guy who performed Larry West's original version for John Bannon many years ago, leading to John's later development of his Stranger's Gallery variation. A rainbow deck is not the way to end the effect, not only because it's inconsistent with the premise, as you noted, but because it makes the four cards stand out less at the climax of the effect.

I absolutely agree. But, I think John Bannon mentions that "Stranger's Gallery" can also be done with a rainbow deck on his Impossibilia video.

He does, and it's been mentioned elsewhere. Thanks for your thoughts and I will stick w/ the solid deck. Any tips, subtleties or improvements you can share?

Sorry that I have nothing further to share on this as I still perform the original version.

Thanks. It's pretty solid as is. Now as for "original version" do you use the Jordan count as in S&M, or the other move as in the marketed version instructions?

The original version doesn't use the Jordan Count and also doesn't use the move in Stranger's Gallery (I assume that you're referring to the Diminishing Lift sequence).

Actually,I just checked the version in Smoke & Mirrors and he does use a Jordan to set up the diminishing lift. The marketed version uses a triple from the bottom of the packet. Do you have an opinion on whether one is better? Is there another "original version" I don't' know about?

Sorry, I don't have an opinion as I've always felt that Larry West's original version is superior (it doesn't use a Jordan Count, it doesn't use a Diminishing Lift, and it doesn't use a triple from the bottom of the packet). I don't know what else to tell you because, to my knowledge, West never published his original (he showed it to me personally decades ago). I'll let others post who can help you with the Stranger's Gallery variation.

Apologies. I should have read your original post more clearly. I did not realize that the Larry West version is that different and did not realize it was unpublished. Shame, if it's superior, because the premise is solid. Thanks for your input.

For me the rainbow deck end is like a kicker. You start with, apparently, one-color deck. Then you "pick" 3 random cards and 1 from spectator's choice. You change the back color of that card one by one and at the end you make impression the deck you had earlier changed to be different deck.

If you use a deck that's one color which is different from the color of the individual cards that you change, you also give the impression that the deck you had earlier changed to a different deck, and as mentioned above, not only is it consistent with the premise of the effect, but the four cards stand out more. My recommendation is that you try it both ways a number of times for different audiences so that you can judge the differences in reaction.

I like the effect, made up my own cards for it thanks for The Art of Card Splitting, but I really don't like that riffle force it uses.

Riffle force? I can't remember what it's proper name is (not riffle force), but THINK it's a Henry Christ creation? Anyway, here's a decent performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRUbLdBurTA

Just for the record that's me performing Strangers Gallery in the above mentioned youtube link. I have used SG as an opener for years, exactly as I perform it in the video. I would really like to see the Larry West original. Will there ever be an opportunity to do so ?

but I really don't like that riffle force it uses. In Smoke and Mirrors John Bannon mentions you can use any face-up force you want, and suggests a face up dribble, riffle, or classic force. I like the specific force Bannon chose for this effect only, as it allows you to do the final display of the entire deck beveled with the regular back showing, further re-inforcing the normality of the deck. |

Good job jennings,
Stranger's Gallery is one of my favorite Bannon tricks. I think your performance is quite a bit better than decent.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

That was great, Jennings! My only suggestion is... "8 of Clubs" is already plural, so no need to add another 's.

If we ever run into each other, I'll gladly perform it for you. My bet is that if you're interested in real-world effects vs. magician foolers, you'd fall in love with it just like I did. Every time I see other color changing deck effects, I smile because it reminds me how fortunate I was to know Larry West. |

Hi Robert M,
Adding another S to '8 of clubs' is supposed to be a funny line. Perhaps it does not work well on a youtube video. lol. It's actually a line Bannon himself uses only he adds an S to '9 of diamonds'. Hi Larry, I appreciate the reason why you cannot expose Larry's original trick but could I ask who actually owns the rights to the effect today ? Could they not be approached concerning a possible release ? Thanks for the comments guys. Andy |
