I did a quick search to see if a similiar thread has already been started, but couldn't find one. Also, someone else brought up this topic in another thread, but I felt continueing it there would of taken the original topic off course.
I have looked into using Gospel music as background music in my show that I do for teens, but one of the first problems I encountered was copyright laws. Just like the music we use in our singing worship, I would have to get written permission, and or pay royalty fees to the artists or record companies to be able to use any of the contemperary or copyrighted christian music. I did however discover a band called "Apologetix". They are a christian parody band who takes main stream secular music and changes the words to fit the christian faith. They are remarkably good at it! I have listened to many of thier songs and enjoy almost everything they've released. I personally emailed the band to ask if I could use some of their songs in a Gospel magic show. I explained to them that my shows are to help raise funds for youth ministries. I was happily surprised that they gave me written permission to use some of their music as background music to my shows. And, they didn't require or ask for any royalties from me for using them, just as long as I was using them for what I said I was using them for. I thought I would share that with you all. If you don't know who Aplogetix is here is a link to their webpage. You may even be able to sample some of their music online. http://apologetix.com/

Talk about a delicate balance - one of the strongest concerns in this forum is "does the magic get in the way of the message?"
Now you've got (1) the message you're trying to get across, (2) the magic, and (3) the music (I assume that since it's 'gospel music' it must have lyrics). Sounds a bit, to me, like trying to concentrate on 3 televisions all playing at the same time ... too many ingredients. |

Our youth pastor at our church owns a few CD's from Apologetix, I'm really impressed.

When the right kind of ingredients are properly added, you can have a tasty meal!:) Nothing can replace the wholesome purity of God's Word in raw form, but for the sake of christian entertainment the three mixed together with a whole lot of God's love can be most enjoyable and an enlightnening experience.
3 televisions playing at the same time can be quite distracting, as would playing music with lyrics while trying to speak. I don't think anyone would try doing that. However, a three ring circus has three different things going on at the same time and all my years of going to the circus I never found it distracting.

Hi ibm_usa,
I hope you don't mind that I took your question to a new thread. I liked your question but didn't want to get the other thread off topic. I have to admit, I'm a big fan of Apologetix.

I don't really have an opinion about using the music with your show, if you can make it work, more power to ya! I am too inexperienced to have a voice in the discussion.
I just wanted to say thanks for turning me on to this awesome band. The melodies you know, but with Christian words! Danton

Thanks Donald, for the link. I checked out some of their samples, and although I find it reminds me too much of elevator music, I'm sure it can be useful for some looking for gospel music without lyrics for their Gospel magic presentation.

You're welcome. It might be right for some, and might not be. However, there are lots of sources for royalty-free music out there (a lot that is not specifically created for magicians, too). And this was a source of gospel royalty-free music I was aware of.
Here is my opinion on using Apologetix for background music during a show. First off, I love Apologetix. I've known of them for years. However, the thing about their music is that because the tunes are so familiar, that first engages the listener. What pulls the listener in, is the unique twist in the lyrics. Its not the lyrics they are used to hearing. I think that people end up concentrating on the lyrics, and how clever the band is to put those lyrics to the other tunes. Because of all of that going on in the audience's heads, I personally would not want to add something visual like magic into the mix. This problem would be unique to using a music style like Apologetix offers, as background music. To help understand this, think about how you feel when you hear a Weird Al Yankovic song. Do you pay attention to the lyrics? What if it was the first time you heard his song (his parody of someone's original), but someone was doing something totally unrelated visually to that song? Would you be able to focus on both listening to his lyrics, and also watching the unrelated performance? Again, this is just my opinion. - Donald

Good point. Even though I don't use a lot of music in my Gospel magic, I have used,"Stay In The Light" (Stayin' Alive-Bee-Gees) when performing my candle act which I believe goes very well with my candle production routine. You are right about the audience focusing on the lyrics. When they notice that the words are different they begin to listen even more to the lyrics, which is kinda like a sermon in a song. One would have to be selective in what they choose as their background music and they would have to make sure it fits not only with the magic being performed during it, but the over all theme of your message. I'd love to hear more from others who use music in their Gospel magic shows, and if they have any advice and wisdom to share.
