G.Gilbert,
Thank you for nice comments. I do the C&Bs on the street but I thought I would share something different this time. What kind of show do you do at the bar? Is it in a show format like Doc Eason or something different? Thank you again, Tony

Where is a good place to see street performers in Charleston now?

There are NOT many street performers (magicians, jugglers, etc...) in Charleston. In fact, you really won't find any on a consistent basis that one would know about and could plan to go and see.
You will see many different types of street performances during the annual Piccolo Spoleto festival, but this has nothing to do with magic. More dance, art, etc... http://www.piccolospoleto.com/home/default.aspx The best thing for anyone who wants to perform magic on the street in Charleston, is to do exactly what Tony did and just "come on down." Head downtown to the market area, the Customs House or the Waterfront Park (where Tony went) areas and "just do it." You might, if you cause problems, get a visit from a policeman asking you to move on. They don't walk the beat and won't bother you unless you're bothering others and they get called. Sooo...come on down! We'd love to see more street magic. Mark. |

Great job Tony! Very entertaining magic. Only thing I could see to make that routine better would have been to have gotten the audience in closer but it looked like you had a somewhat timid bunch.

Mark is absolutely correct when he and I were scouting locations we saw one guy (only once) with his case open playing guitar. Waterfront Park and in front of the Customs House were both great locations and the people were fun.
Mark was instrumental in helping me find a place to work and he was nice enough to video tape my show for me. Thank you Mark.

John Bowlin thank you. I agree they were a little further away than I like but they moved in little by little before the end of that set.

Tony...you're more than welcome. It was a LOT of fun and I look forward to doing it again.
As Tony mentioned, when he started performing and "building the tip," the crowd was a bit stand-offish (is that actually a word?). I think it's because people are not used to seeing street magicians/performers here and were afraid they'd be sold something. But...they did start moving in, laughing, clapping and having a great time. Great job Tony! Mark. |

George11,
Thank you. Will your shows be open to the public? If so I will make it a point to attend. I'll call you soon. Regards, Tony

Tony,
I don't know how I missed this but that was a great opener! Great pacing, good connection with the audience, you built your helper up and treated him very well, you got a couple good yuks, great audience applause management, and strong magic. I'd love to see the rest of the set. The pacing was really just perfect. I see so many guys who just appear manic in there performance, this was a genuine treat. You have a FANTASTIC voice, The only suggestion I would make is I don't think your costume matches your character. Your character is butter smooth and I think a sharper costume would sell it better. Really likable, confident, and professional, stuff. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I know Tony and I was surprised by his outfit too. I've never seen him dressed like that. Nothing wrong with it, but I know his chops are good and it (the outfit) didn't seem to fit him. Sorry Tony, but in my mind I have you picture as a bit more of a classy style performer. I also know Charleston and realize that maybe this was more of a crowd catcher outfit ?? Anyways I wish you well and hope you get to do some of your quality stuff. I'll try to catch you next time I'm in town. PS.. I am looking for a hat like you wore. Trois
Not clever enough to come up with something orginal, or did I.

Fun stuff, Tony! I remember walking by that very spot last time I was in Charleston and thinking that it would be a great place to play. We usually stay at the Pickney Inn and I play near the City Market closer to Meeting St. while the missus shops. The waterfront area was fairly dead last time we were there. My wife and I are headed back in June and I'm looking forward to giving it another go. We're also looking forward to more of those unbelievable Sticky Finger ribs! Maybe I'll run into you and Mark.
By the by, you looked MUCH more comfortable than I usually am in my period wardrobe. I wonder if I can find some 1800 period shorts???

Yep...Tony did a fantastic job that evening. I can't remember, but I think his dress had something to do with the weather. It was HOT and humid!
When you all come to Charleston, let me know and hopefully we can meet. I'll try and help where I can. I'll also try to round up some of the guys and maybe we can have a "jam session." Trois, we've missed each other on your visits, but we'll catch up one day. Looking forward to seeing you ALL in Charleston! Just drop me a PM. Mark. |

Wow! Dan, I think I'm blushing. Thank you for your assessment of my show (clip of my show). I have a lot of respect for you and your opinion. So your kind works meant a lot to me.
I do agree about what you said about my costume. I don’t usually dress in shorts and a tee shirt. I have attached a photo of my usual costume. Please tell me if this is a better choice or not as I am always look to improve. Again thank you, Tony Click here to view attached image.

Hi Trois,
It is always good to hear from you. I actually got that hat in Myrtle Beach. I will check with my wife and see if she can remember were we got it. I think it has been about seven or eight years since I purchased it. So the store may not be in business any more. But I will give you a call when I get the information. Talk to you soon, Tony

Skip,
That really is a great place and although there wasn’t a large group of people there at anyone time there was a lot of continues foot traffic. The hard part was stopping the first couple of people. However, once they stopped the crowd built very fast. You may have to get to Charleston pretty quick if you want some of those Stick Finger ribs. Stick Fingers is going out of business. Mark knows the scoop better than I do. I live in Rock Hill, SC which is about three to three and a half hours from Charleston so let me know in advance when you are heading down and I will try and make planes to come down as well. As a matter of fact the Ring 370 in Charleston is having there one day convention on Saturday May 03, 2008. That would be a perfect time for everyone to get to gather. If you would like to attend just let me or Mark know and we will send you some information. Thanks, Tony
