Does anyone get their health insurance through the IBM plan, and can someone tell me what the pricing is like and their overall opinion of the plan?

I can't believe no one has answered your post! I, too, would be interested in this...as I consider leaving my day job and pursuing magic full time.

Go right to the source for the straight scoop, Ted ----> info@magician.org
Sindie will surely have good and direct information to send you and may be able to provide a couple of strong references, if asked. Frankly, I don't know anyone who uses the I.B.M. health benefits.

We are currently looking for a new provider for not only health, but also home and auto insurance. Keep checking out the web site for an announcement.

As an alternative or temporary lead-in to I.B.M. coverage consider these two possibilities shared with me a while back by a friend in the industry. I have no idea how viable they may be personally, but they make some sense.
The larger your deductible the lower your premiums. Place $2000 or more into a savings account and tag this money for medical expenses at the start of each year. Then negotiate self-employed heath coverage with a deductible equal to the amount held in savings. You pay the first $2000, $3000 or whatever your deductible is set at for the year...which greatly reduces your out-of-pocket premiums. The plus side is that you're covered for catastrophic injuries, accidents and hospital stays that could easily run into the tens of thousands at a more affordable premium. He also suggested, for those with college degrees, that we check with the local school systems. Signing up as a substitute teacher often qualifies you for the system's medical and retirement plans at very reasonable rates. With today's shortage of teachers, you generally need nothing more than a college degree...and some areas and private systems don't require that...and you can work as little as one or two days a month to keep your eligibility. Certainly worth a look. Now that I've recalled these two suggestions, I think I'll do a little more research into this. Sounds interesting.
