That is a good book, but Bill is very biased on the topic.

Bill is very orthodox in his beliefs, he is a Catholic Priest, and considers psychics an abomination.

I don't have any problems setting aside the author's opinions, but my major problem with Rauscher's book is that it's simply poorly written and disorganized.

Are there good alternatives? Personally, I thought this was a good book, and I too am very used to setting aside author's more personal opinions to still get to the good stuff, especially in these fields that rarely seems to find space between extremes of uber-"scepticism" and brain-dripping out their ears superficiality or plain ignorance of some the true workings of the psyche.

John Booth had a lot of history in "Psychic Paradoxes." But I don't think it is available any more.

Mr William Rauscher is not a catholic priest but an Episcopal Priest.
He is also a believer in contact with dead spirits. For clarification of this see his book on the Houdini Seance and a few others below. A very nice person and a gentleman, and open minded in his own way, though firm in his beliefs as one might expect. Quite a proflic writer, having written Psychic Mafia, and a book on or with Arthur Ford. He is a select list, Spiritual Frontier,A Priest Explores the Psychic World; Arthur Ford The Man Who Talked With the Dead (Co-author) (Hardback and Paperback); John Calvert, Magic and Adventures Around the World; Psychic Mafia, (collaborator); Houdini Code, The Houdini Code Mystery: A Spirit Secret Solved; ESP or Trickery, The Problem of Mentalism Within The World of Magic; Servais Le Roy - Monarch of Mystery; The Wand, in Story and Symbol; The Great Raymond,Entertainer of Kings - King of Entertainers; S. S. Adams, igh Priest of Pranks and Merchant of Magic The Mind Readers,Masters of Deception; RM&S - An Autobiography, Religion, Magic, and the Supernatural, The Autobiography, Reflections, and Essays of an Episcopal Priest Published as Booklets Marco The Magi,Wise Man Of Magic; Walter Gibson, Wizard of Words Many others. Quite proflic Goto http://www.mysticlightpress.com/ For more about him and his works. Dick

Thank you Dick.
I did make a mistake on his demonination, for that I apologize. I'm not thinking as clearly as I wish (darned flu) not that I think that clearly most times. When we met, we talked a lot about his work on the Mind Readers, he was very excited about it. He expressed very certain opinions on the people he was writing about. William Rauscher is a very interesting man and I do wish I had spent more time with him. It was because of our meeting that I too began collecting his works. We also talked about what I guess has come to be "RM&S - An Autobiography, Religion, Magic, and the Supernatural, The Autobiography, Reflections, and Essays of an Episcopal Priest" I expressed an interest in it, he said that it might never be done because every time he looked at it, he had more to add. Dick, is that book still available? Tony |

I found the book. David at SS Adams is the sole distributer. Probably because Ray (Goulet) retired. Ray is the one who introduced me to Bill.

did not like the houdini book at all - was going to write a very strong letter to author, publisher and vendor about how bad a book I thought it was but didn't dave |

Well, if you consider that mentalism takes its roots from both magic and spiritualism, read up on some victorian table-rappers...there's some good books on those subjects...too many to list in fact...
for a nice overview of what mentalism is about - I'd recommend The Encyclopedia of Mentalism by Robert A. Nelson - which covers a brief history and the base effects of mentalism...written in 1967 if memory serves... and also a book called The First Psychic, just for some cross-over food for thought... just my thoughts..
I've asked to be banned
