I use poker size cards. I do so because my hands are small and the cards look big. So big...that I couldn't possibly palm a card;-)
I have on occasion used bridge size cards. No one cared or noticed. But, the faces of poker cards are easier for larger groups to see. That would be a reason to use them. Handed a deck? A child once handed me their deck. It had flowers on the backs funny faces. It was at a friends of a friends and they told their kid I was a magician. I was asked to do something and I said "if only I had a deck of cards" and...the kid went and got theirs. I don't "perform" for friends or at social gatherings as a rule ( I have at times, but prefer not to ). At a paid gig, why would anyone hand you a deck?

I thought the opinions expressed in this thread seemed familiar:

My largeish hands fit well with these, bridge size cards feel fidgety to me. That said, I found them looking clunky at first, as I (living in Denmark and The Netherlands) had been used to bridge sized cards until I started with magic. I do realize that I am adding very little to the posts already made above, but I am at work and bored. Michael |

Here in Norway the cards people use are mostly Bridge size. But when I started I wanted to use those huge Cadillacs that I saw the cool pros use. So that's what I did. Now they are what looks normal to me. I'm happy with my decision. After a while my hands suddenly weren't too small anymore. A mystery.
Completely illogical to use poker cards from my point of view as I don't use gaffs anyway and I need to import every deck instead of buying a "normal" looking one. But laymen just don't notice card size anyway and I'm the one who is going to fondle these things for hours on end. I say try poker size for a while. You can always switch next year. No one will think less of you. Well... hardly anyone at least.

I think we all know it really doesn't matter but here are some reasons I'd suggest poker cards:
gaffs are easier to find: poker easier/cheaper to buy $13 at costco for a dozen: poker better for matrix: poker if you can use these you can easily use the other: poker borrowed deck is usually (unless the spectator's are 60+): poker

I once did a gig for an online poker company. They had a little deck of cheap, nasty bridge sized playing cards at every place setting, and of course I kept on getting handed one when I approached the table!
I was very direct with them: "sure, I'll do something with these cards, but they aren't great quality so I'll just do the one trick before washing my hands three times, saying my mantra and getting out my own high quality cards" Got a laugh and no-one seemed to mind.

Sorry, forgot to mention this one earlier. One advantage to having a bridge sized deck is that they will probably be easier for spectators to handle, which helps if you like to do hands-off stuff. It is possible to do card tricks for kids if you know what you're doing, but poker-sized decks would be especially difficult for them to handle.

I, as a beginner, have found it useful to practice with bridge size cards on the occasions where my fingers have had a hard time reaching where they had to, however I have always quickly returned to poker size as soon as my handling of a slight improved just a bit.
Whether you use them in performance or not, whether they are common in your area or not etc., they can be handy in a practice situation. Michael |

As I've mentioned previously, I use poker size cards, but not because I'd be any less of a magician if I used bridge size cards. Jerry Andrus once told me something that's directly on point and that I found funny. He always used bridge size cards, and when other magicians made fun of him for doing that, he'd hand them a Jack Daniels deck that was larger than poker size and tell the magicians that if they were real men they would use those. By the way, Jerry could do most of his magic with Jack Daniels cards, he simply chose not to.

Bro,
I think that it definitely is a preference thing. I personally use poker sized cards because it's easier to find them. Also as others have already suggested, gaffs are easier to find for them. You could decide to make your own gaffs if you go with the bridge decks:) Personally, I've found that to laymen, the size of the cards do not matter. So go with what works. I second Mickey though, working on the Buck's stuff, they are mutants!:) All the best. Ike |

I like your story about the Jack Daniels cards, it made me smile and then consider buying larger cards to practice with in addition to my bridge size decks.
The bridge size I use are the cheap tourist cards you can buy in any souvenir shop, and I actually used it for a performance once. The patter was something specific to the occasion, the cards had pictures of the airport on the backs, and the other deck tulips. I don't remember the patter anymore, but I used the Red Hot Mama/Chicago Opener trick with it somehow. I don't see as many poker sized decks with interesting back designs that can be used in patter, perhaps another argument for bridge decks? Michael |

I am just starting working with cards, as I am a total beginner, got the royal road and everything...I am using poker sized cards...and I truly believe I would suck just as bad with bridge sized as well...So I really should expect it to take 2 years to get functional? so, how long does it take to make a good consistant shuffle?

NoVaCain,
Welcome to the Café and the wonderful world of magic! With time, dedication, good instruction and countless hours of practice I'm sure you will exceed the "suck" level much sooner than 2 years. Good luck and keep us posted! Mick |

I started with royale road 2 years ago. And with daily practice I am better than I ever though possible, but still on the low end of the skill level. I suggest just practice your shuffling. Don't try to control slugs yet. Once you get comfortable, then try to control a slug of cards. Also, brand new cards are difficult to riffle shuffle because they are stiff. It's easier when you break the cards in. I'm never with out a deck of cards, and when ever I get five minutes to myself I practice. That's all it takes my friend! Hope that helps. JHN |

I still suck!! Just a lot less than when I started. Back then though I used every opportunity to practice. (even a short period where I thought it was clever to practice in the car. After some thought it occured to me that this is not a good idea. At all). I would say I got fairly proficient at overhand shuffle techniques, controlling a card to different positions, double undercutting to control a card, in the hands riffle shuffling after about 6 months. And if you can do all that, you can do a heck of a lot of card magic.

Sorry, in relation to the topic at hand, I used poker size from the outset. Then I found when I started to tackle things like the Hot Shot Cut that I just couldn't get the knack. I practiced for a small while with bridge size on some of these cuts, but quickly went back to poker size once I felt I was getting the knack.
