I am going to make up my own Invisible Deck. My question is how long to you have to let the ROUGHING Spray sit before I assemble the deck? I am going to use the Rough King spray and I really would like to know what the drying time is. I DO NOT want the cards to stick together and ruin the deck. This question might sound dumb but I am not a card man. This is why I am seeking your expert advise.
NOTE: Please DO NOT tell me just to buy a "NEW" Deck that is not what I am looking for. And please stick to the topic at hand. Rodney

I have used Rough King not to make an ID/UM deck, but to freshen a deck up that I bought new after it started to lose its R/S properties.
If you decide to do this I would suggest doing it Outdoors on a nice calm day.If you do it indoors use a painters mask. Set out a small group of cards out[8-10].Hold the can about 2 1/2 feet above the cards and lightly spray the backs ..allowing the spray to float down and contact the cards.Do not overspray! You can always add more.I woulld first practice a bit with the joker's and Ad cards to get just the right feel. Ps.Let the cards dry thoroughly before testing them..be patient. Good luck. Rich |

I've never had any luck with Roughing Spray. I always manage to screw it up somehow. ID are cheap...I usually buy about 10 at a time and when they start to jack up one me, I move to the next ID.
I can usually get about 4 months out of an ID with as much as I use it. The guy I buy the from sells them to me for $5 if I buy 10 or more at a time. I think they sell for $8 otherwise...????

Also, be sure to use good cards for this so the spray doesn't make any colors run on the back design. You don't have to buy "magician's roughing spray", either. Go to your local WalMart or whatever you have in your universe and buy Testor's "Matte Spray" in the modelling department. Saves you a bunch of money (like Geico)...

Hi Rodney
I have been making my own RS cards for years and I use the Rough King. I will often just use a "touch" of spray per card, as in hold it up about 20cm from the can and fully depress the button and release in one swift motion. less than a second over all. I usually leave it about 15 minutes and then fan it until it is TOTALLY dry. That ought to do it for You Liam

I haven't bought an ID in years; I make my own. Testors is the way to go. I spread the deck onto a full sheet on newspaper and spray from a foot away. I let them dry for about 10 minutes and set it up.
By the way, you don't have to pair the cards in any fashion. Just separate the odds & evens - for the kings I use red on the odd side,(3 letters each) and black on even (4 letters). Then when the card is named make sure that named card side (odd or even) is facing you. DO NOT hold the cards down so your crotch is the backdrop - instead fan them at EYE level. When you see the card, do the separation. No counting and calculating - just look for the card and separate. Have the spectator remove it and cut at the card has a back facing you. When they are done with it, place it on top and you are reset. I haven't done the "low" display in so long I can't remember.

I used the matt spray on my first attempt & it worked well, also l put a broom handle over the middle of the backs when spaying so l could spread the named card easily.

Check out Jon Tremaine's version of the Invisiable Deck on his mental act tape or dvd. I think this is what your looking for.

That's a really interesting way to do it Scott! I'm not sure I'm confident enough to do it that way though....

I like Scott's idea too, When I use a jumbo invisible deck, I find looking at the back is the best way to fan and find the chosen card. A big deck begs to be shown so that every one can see it, other wise what is the point of having a jumbo deck eh? I've never used my regular deck this way but I'll give it a shot and see what it feels like.

A little off topic, but I just watched Invisible by Jay Sankey. It has completely changed the way I approach the ID, and some of his alternate handlings are incredible. Some of them require a couple of decks to do the trick, but this is made a lot cheaper if you're making your own decks. Do yourself a favor and check it out, as it is one of the best magic DVDs I've ever seen.

I second the nomination of Invisible by Sankey. Great topical DVD. Gotta love that XDeck.

I'd definitely leave them for a few hours. Better safe than sorry right:)
I'd recommend looking into Ross Bertram's method for preparing them. It allows for a smoother separation of the cards when you need it. I came across this in David Ben's wonderful book, Tricks. |
