Hi Rick,

A simple question to, hopefully, introduce a broader question...

I love your effect Heads & Tales as written and hope to see you perform it one day (any plans to come to Europe?). One thing intrigues me, the audience assistant gets to keep a poker chip that will be used later in the evening. Where is the poker chip used? Is it in one of your published effects?

I'm very interested in how you routine your effects together into a full show. Do you see the script of a show in terms of a traditional story arc or as a collection of pieces that work together? I guess another way of asking that might be, how modular are the effects when writing a show?

Thanks

Stuart

Greetings Stuart,

Man, I really like your questions, but I will warn you that my answer could easily fill an entire book. And I am talking a Mind, Myth & Magic size book, not one of those wimpy little things that my dear friend Docc puts out.

To begin, the poker chip from Heads & Tales (which is actually my favorite of all of my creations) comes back into play at the very end of my show, but where it gets used is not published. However, I will say that everything will be out in Occam's Magic.

I will also tell you that I have three different ending pieces to choose from, and each one uses the chip from Heads & Tales. That basically leads into part of your second series of questions.

The pieces of my show are modular to a certain extent. But the key is that the theme and the character are always consistent. Although some of the pieces may occasionally change, the show itself is always exactly the same (at least in regard to theme and character).

Without going too far at this point, tell me if any of that answers your questions.

Oh yeah, and at this point, I have no plans to come to Europe, but that may change in 2009.

Keep the change,
Rick

Thanks Rick,

That does answer my question to some degree. Looking forward to Occam's Magic. I can see that consistency of theme and character are very important. And I'm very interested in how the three endings are different in terms of the theme and character. I've written screenplays in the past and finding "one" good ending that works for the theme and the character is hard enough. Do you find that one of the possible endings becomes your favorite?

If you make it to the UK in 2009 I'd love to invite you lecture at the University where I work.

Best

Stuart

Thanks Stuart.

Are they still available?

And, any news on when Occam's Magic will be available? I've been waiting for it, for what seems like an eternity

Heads or Tails is my favorite effect from Rick! It still gives me that same beautiful feeling after seeing it numerous times now.

Jason my friend...

Thanks for the nice words. It was great to see you in KC, and I hope that we can get together again soon. (Want to come to Pittsburgh to hang out and lecture?)

Yeah, Heads & Tales is actually the only piece that I have created that I am really happy with. To me, it is the best thing that I do. And I know that it is not for everyone, but that is probably one of the reasons that I like it so much.

To be honest, the different closing pieces that I use are very much like owning three different shirts. There are days that I prefer one over the others, but for the most part, they all fit.

Now, that response may seem a bit light, but it really isn't. And the reason is that I really have had a couple dozen pieces that I created for that end spot in my show, but over time, I have cut the possibilities down to just three--each of which has its own personality, and its own style. So any of the three would work in the average performance. But by having the choice of more than one closer, I am able to vary the ending of the show for repeat bookings, and I can also take other factors into consideration when deciding what would work best on any given night.

I hope that answers your question. Take care my friend.

Greetings alabau

You can refer to my response to Adam in regard to my MV2006 lecture notes. Until Occam's Magic comes out, that is the only place that Heads & Tales is published.
