For many tricks that I do I need a way to have a card on top of the deck with the spectator thinking the card is in the middle of the deck. So what I normally do is just use a false cut, but I have been caught doing a false cut by the spectator before. Can someone please tell me a good false cut or another way to have the spectators card on top of the deck with them thinking its in the middle.
Thanks Ian |

Hi Ian
It might be useful to describe the false cut you're currently doing. In any event, it's probably a matter of practice than learning a new version. Of course, a solid invisible pass is a good alternative but the key words with any version is practice, practice and more practice. afknight |

I'll assume from your post that you have the card picked, having the card replaced on top of the deck and then cutting, supposedly to center. Is this correct?
If so then Hindu Shuffle, a Pass/Shift, Side Steal, Cull to bottom and shuffle to top works. |

Are you using a table or standing up?

IMO, try not to use an intricate or fancy false cut ( unless the nature of the routine calls for such a cut ). I've seen many magicians ruin a fine effect by doing so. Although you may be adept at it, you're calling attention to the fact that you can control the packets. Don't look at your hands, ask a question, make a comment, engage the spectator. You want the spectator to think that it doesn't matter. Hope some of this helps.

A scrape cut could work, or a slip cut too. There are many cuts that will work, but I thik in this case I would use a sort of multiple shift with one card, if not, palming and letting te spectator cut.

Ian,
Since you're a new member, it's hard to know your skill level or if what I recommend would be something you would know, or be able to do. Card controls are very contextual. By that I mean that what control is most deceptive for a particular trick depends ON the trick. Most controls fall into one of two categories: the card is “lost” in the deck, or the card’s general location is known. For example, if you were doing a trick where four people all took cards, and you found them all, a shuffle control like the Mahatma control would be ideal, because it’s easy to do, and convincing and the impression is that as each card is returned to the pack the cards are shuffled to “lose” the selection. Most laymen will not consider that you could keep track of four cards with all that shuffling, and even if they do, the feat seems way more impressive than it actually is. Compare this with a trick where the signed card flies from the pack to your pocket or appears between two jacks on the table. In this case if the audience thinks they know the approximate location of the card (somewhere in the middle) then the effect is stronger than if they don’t know where it is supposed to be because you shuffled the cards. I would recommend learning a good overhand shuffle control and a side steal. Paul Cummins has an excellent DVD called the Side Steal Declassified, or you can learn it from Card College. Overhand shuffle controls are all over the literature so you probably have that information already. If not check Royal Road or Expert at the Card Table. |

One of the absolute easiest methods I know is "The Simplified Pass" from Tarbell, Vol 1, p. 195.
To see it in action, watch Jay Ose use it in the card trick he does for Joan Blondell. http://youtube.com/watch?v=7KQiuvX1xKI&feature=related The simplified pass happens between 2:55 and 3:00 in this clip. If you have or can rent a copy of "The Cincinnati Kid" DVD you can watch this same film short on your TV at DVD quality.
Woke up.

All good advices there.. you should find your way from there..
well, another option is make a selection by riffling the cards and ask spec to say "stop". Then you cut to that point, and do DL. Say that it's their selection, then turnover the double again, and put the top card into the middle. You got what you want.. |

For me the very best is the Old HOP move another that cmoes to mind is the Sadowitz move..
Harry7 Lorayne teaches the hop on one of his videos but I added a very nice convincer to the hop that makes it even more deceptive. pm me if interested ill send TEACHING DEMO VINNY |

The hop is not really a "false cut." HL

If you've got Apocalypse volume II (or is it III) there's a fairly natural looking false cut in the trick "safety deposit box" where to appear to bury a card as you table the deck in packets.

Is the hop an action which permits you to "cheat the cut"? ie they make an honest cut and then you use the hop to put the packets together?
Been a while since exploring that stuff so I need some clarification on this one.

Yes, but it can also be used as a false cut.
