Harry had used the glide, and, a few years later I realized that it was really an awkward move to produce the effect. BTW...The dealers in those days, "knew" where Harry had just been performing, by the orders for 6CR and Clippo! (Each sold for a buck!) Like Jay Marshall, I've always saved everything! If I have a minute, I'll DIG thru my instruction sheet file. I suspect it was Percy Abbott, and, he always wrote "Abbott's Magic Novelty Co." on all instruction sheets. Although, like many tricks of that type, it was likely made up by many dealers.

Just saw Whit ``Pop`` Haydn teach his version at a live lecture this week-end and I can assume this would also be funny for a younger crowd.

Bill Severn devised a Six Card Repeat using round fair ground tokens. This is quite useful for kids´ magic shows. These may be found in the following books:
"Let´s Go to the Fair", chapter of "Bill Severn´s Magic in Four Acts", pages 147-154 (This same book was published under the name of "Giving a Magic Show"). The same trick also appears on "Bill Severn´s Best Magic", pages 72-77. Other interesting versions of the Six Bill Repeat effect may be found as "Rainbow Repeat Bills", which is the last trick on Severn´s book entitled "Magic With Coins and Bills". Depending on the edition of the book paging may be different. On the 3-volume compilation called "Bill Severn´s Complete Book of Magic", it appears on pages 295-305. Another useful effect from the same book using bills is "The Travelling Millionaire", pages 246-253. This trick was often performed by Tommy Wonder. Another bill trick which may varied to suit different environments is "The Money Spell", on pages 253-258 of the same book. A variation of the Six Bill Repeat called "Magic Money Guess" is found on pages 50-52 of "Bill Severn´s Amazing Magic". Severn´s clear writing, abundant diagrams and creative patter are very agreeable to read and learn. |

Hi,
Just returned to the Café after a year of absence and immediately my attention gravitated to the post on Six Card Repeat. I recently did a huge purge on a room that contains many of my magic items and was pleased to find Six Card Repeat which I haven't used in years. It was one item I put aside with the intention of using again one day as I too agree it's a class piece of magic. So I logged in to add my two cents to this post and had a bit of a chuckle when I realized I had already posted in this thread on page 1 dated 2003!! Cheers! |

I know of a multitude of magicians that use Bill Abbott's 5 Card Opener in there kids shows and it plays very well. I am considering adding in my family show myself.

I was going to suggest Pop Hayden's routine. He teaches it on his Penguin lecture.
David Williamsons 3 card routine is on his Penguin lecture.

I'm getting ready to release my "Attractive Cards" e-Book in The Wizards' Journal #32. One of the effects it contains is a modern version of Abbott's 1940 "Repeat Rabbit" trick but because of the new principle involved, you are not restricted to using small playing cards with black and white line-art drawings of identical rabbits. Instead, you can use your computer printer to print out the cards in any size, even super jumbo (8.5" x 11") big enough for a large audience. The cards you print up all have identical playing card-like backs until you get to the finale (or as some say, with a sigh of relief, the finally!). The full color rabbits can all be different, including each of the baby rabbits as they are removed, and you can even use the names suggested by Sid Lorraine in his delightful patter story: "Flopsy, Mopsy, Tipsy, Topsy, Cottontail and Wilberforce." Those names can be printed on the original six cards, which, at the beginning, are all shown on both sides to have playing card backs, but at the end, when they are put into the hands of the spectators, turn out to have lots of baby rabbits on the reverse side.
Printing out your own cards also has the advantage of allowing you to change the theme from rabbits to space aliens, or cockroaches, or trick or treaters, etc. Of course there are more tricks than that in the e-Book, but this topic is about six card repeat effects, so that's all I'll mention here.

What has changed about your presentation, pacing, lines, etc.? What has worked? Why? Does the movement of the comic book line work better? I really appreciate how Pop's presentations are so singularly Pop's (and no one else's), and I am entranced by the consummate craftsmanship that goes into your act. If I am out of line asking this, please excuse my presumption. I apologize in advance. |

I have your download; I was just interested in your perspective on the continuing evolution of the trick.
I have not seen any presentation by you that wasn't highly polished. But even the most highly polished presentation, when used by a professional for years, will have some spots (I wouldn't even call them "rough" patches) smoothed out through usage. And proper editing - conveying ideas in fewer words - can also take years of use. And, of course, making it all sound like it is being made up on the spot is always devastating. Sometimes when professionals perform the same routine repeatedly, the routine gets dulled - details, little bits, the cocking of an eyebrow, an aside to the audience, may get forgotten or overlooked. Your routines seem to get refined and not dulled - you are really thinking about them constantly. I was wondering whether you had anything to add to the six card trick - maybe it would be a better question in five years. |

The videos I publish on Youtube are a good source for following changes I have made to a routine. Usually not a lot--most of the routines I've published I've been doing for a long time and they don't change much. It is the first six to ten years of a trick that it might continue to evolve. You are right, it is better to ask me in five years...
