I would first like to thank you for your help.
I have been trying to find how to make a floating ball. I have the book 'The Great Illusions of Magic' where I have been introduced to the Okito's Floating Silver Sphere. The book shows the hook up and what it looks like, but it doesn't give any advice on the ball or what thread to use. I would like the ball to be relatively clear and would also like it to illuminate quite brightly, as I have a specific idea for this effect. What would you suggest using for thread, and do you know of any other source material that I could use to get this effect off the ground, so to speak? Thanks again. Roger Boucher |

Dear Roger,
As far as thread goes, it depends on how heavy your ball will be. But the only way to really perform this effect in full light is using a thin thread like Mesika's Spider thread, which I use for the dancing wand. The original Okito ball was made out of paper mixed in glue. It was very light and against most people believe it had a very mat golden look. That way, the ball can be smaller and still look very big on stage. Today they use these Chrome balls, but let me tell you, they look so small on stage because all the black curtains reflecting in the ball, and so it looks very small. During Christmas, they were selling very light plastic Christmas ornaments that would have been perfect. I don't know were to get them right now, but maybe online. That is what Finn Jon used, and he, by the way, had a wonderful routine with a floating ball. I do a version of it with a real soap bubble, and you can see the routine on my DVD 'The Art of Levitation Part 1&2'. Right now, I have a special on that on my website. The nice part about that is no one thinks about threads 'cause most people don't know you can balance a bubble on a thread. |

Dear Losander,
I was thinking more stage vs. just 25 ft of Spider thread, as I need it to float across the stage without me controlling it. Do you have any ideas as to what thread to use? Thanks, Roger Boucher |

It all depends on how heavy the ball is. Generally if you can control the stage as far as back curtain colour, or if they can provide the right lights, you can almost use fishing line. Important the thread has to be black, which you can simply do with a Sharpie or any other black permanent marker. I just lighted the stage for a friend of mine, and he used an 30 pound fishing line. You could not see anything. But like I said, only if the curtain is not looking black. That can be accomplished with lighting or a different curtain colour.
