I'm curious as to what the SAM organization has to say about the exposure article written by SAM member(?) Alex Stone in the most recent issue of Harper's magazine. It was disappointing to read the amount of secrets he revealed but probably the most disheartening was his exposure of Kevin James' sawing in half routine. I have absolutely no idea why Mr. Stone would feel it appropriate to reveal the secret to an effect that he himself was so completely fooled by. Perhaps he felt the exposure would bring him the attention he so badly craves but failed to gain by his lack of talent as displayed at FISM. I wonder what Mr. Stone would say if he were to cross paths with Kevin James? Would it be sorry that I gave away the secret to one of the highlights of your act...probably not.
It would be nice to see a public statement from SAM explaining what action is being taken in response to Mr. Stone's blatant exposure of secrets. jeff ps. I've just come across something that indicates that Mr. Stone isn't a magician but in fact a "journalist". If this is the case I'm wondering why SAM sponsored him to go to FISM. |

Greetings,
thank you for your question and concern with regards to exposure and the position of the S.A.M. While I do not know the individual involved, and I have not read the article myself, I did run a search this morning and there is an Alexander Stone listed as a member in New York on my latest (July 7th) roster of membership of the S.A.M. For many years now the FISM sponsorships have worked in this fashion; under the signature of the President for that year, meaning mine for this year, the S.A.M.'s representative to FISM. Brad Jacobs, is the person who makes the recommendation and sponsorship. This is done this way as FISM does not take place annually and this method provides continuity of process. I do not know who, if anyone, Brad has sponsored this year nor did I ever hear who the SAM sponsored in the past. It is a good thing that you have pointed this out and perhaps we should make sure that a report is turned in for the blue book by the FISM representative as Chair of that committee from now on. Your question might better be addressed to Brad at samambassador@comcast.net, he would be the person to have those answers. The SAM also has an ethics committee and for several years now it has been chaired by Marc de Sousa. You might want to address the question to Marc at fkaps@aol.com and see what he has to say. I am not sure whether either Marc or Brad are contributors on the Magic Café. There is one more thing you could do and that is to ask the President Elect what steps and direction he plans on taking with this and with the FISM situation when he steps up to the plate a week or so from now. You may contact Bruce Kalver at SAMtalkBruce@cox.net. Members of the SAM can also bring this topic over to the two forums that SAM members have access to as a right of membership, at SAMtalk and at SAMtalking. Please do sign up if you haven't already done so. Do not hesitate to contact me now or in the future if I may ever be of any assistance.
