I've seen some previews of different DVDs where the busker is wearing "homo like" clothes. That is not my style. Will the audience give money to those wearing jewlery and wealthy casual clothes?

Go out there and busk in one outfit for a couple of days and then try to exactly repeat your shows during the same times, at the same location, in a different outfit. Keep track of your hats on both outings.
Then you'll have the answer to your question. As for speculation...well, I would tip a waiter just the same if he/she were wearing a nice watch and a iphone or no watch and a pager. As a second thought. If you are busking on the street, then you are making cash on the same stretch of earth that bums are walking. Why not tuck the jewelry in or leave it at home while you're at work...just as a safety precaution. I'm probably not the only busker here that's been followed out to his car by someone who thought they wanted my recently earned income more than me, am I? If you just can't seem to manage taking the jewelry off long enough to work... then perhaps it's time that you question your judgement on whom actually has issues about dressing "with flair" |

Picture it whatever way it feels best for you. It does not matter because I'm still everybody's "homie".

Mike,
In your avatar you're wearing an patterned orange suit. Glass houses and all that. It looks fabulous and all, but I'm just sayin'... As to your question, I think you do need to wear a costume that differentiates you from the audience. And looking like you might need a buck or two never hurt anyone who's a street performer! I usually wear some silver jewelry, but it fits in with my "gypsy garb" I've got going on. When I'm out there, people can see that there is "something" different about me from a block away, many people understand that I'm a magician, even from that distance. Oh, and what Frank said. Dress for comfort! I certainly do think you could get away with a urban smart casual look -I've seen a few buskers who have just that look! What I never understood was the "street magicians" who wear rock tee shirts and leather jackets -even in the best of circumstances, you've got one strike against you - they look just like everyone else.

I think I see what you saying, Gaddy. If I did wear something fancy and stylish I can picture the words in someone's mind:
"Look at his suit. That guy doesn't need any money from me". "I feel jealous because he is wearing a better suit than I am". "He is not getting my money because I can see he has hustled a lot of people already". I want to give it a test as Chad explains. And I have confidence I can get the audience to overlook my outfit with my personality. |

I say Go For It, it's great look, and looks great on you!
Don't misunderstand me -I'm not saying to try to make them give you money out of pity, My main point is to make sure you differentiate yourself from the crowd by your costume. Again, looking like you could use a couple of bucks never hurt, but it's not going to make them dig any deeper, either. G Quote: On 2008-07-19 10:02, Dynamike wrote:

I wonder whether you are setting yourself up as a target by dressing as though you are wealthy. The same is true about a lot of props. If they look expensive they might require watching over more carefully.
I've carried a shoulder bag with my photo equipment in it rather than one of those padded camera bags, for the same sort of reaosning. In the past I've seen really high end bicycles wrapped in duct tape to not draw so much attention to themselves.

I was also thinking about having a sound system built inside of my carrying case/table top. It should help attract/please a crowd. It will me good if I get insurance for my props too.
I do photos too. Does that play big too with street busking? If so, I can use my portable battery powered printer for the photos. I will agree with you about watching my things more carefully. I can see myself nervous at the beginning. I don't know if it will more from it being my first time or the target set up as you described. |

Heya Dynamike,
I've done a lot of thinking about building sound system storage into my table. I have pages of concept drawings solely based on that concept. The reason I've never actually built a dual purpose table like this though is because of the necessary placement of the speaker towards either my 5 or 7 o'clock position while performing. If someone had experience to offer regarding this idea, then I'd be really interested to learn about it. After much consideration, I've opted to keep my speaker and my table separate for the sake of maximizing the quality & range of my sound. ***second topic*** As for handing out photos, you begin to run the risk of being seen as a vendor rather than a busker. If you SELL something, then your venue may require you to get a vendor's license. Balloon artists seem to get away with handing out a product for $ while still maintaining busker statis though, so perhaps you could as well. Just a thought. |

I had no idea vendor and busking would be so different. If Michigan had busking permits I probably would have known. |
