Bleach will quickly tarnish any real silver coin. Hey Lawrens, bleach(Clorox) is used to clean and disinfect. It will turn things(clothes)white. Hope this helps!

Ok, Griff, thanks for the precision...
Yesterday I did some experiment with what I thought was bleach, but the liquid was a poorly concentrated one...I'll see to find a stronger one. But the coin(peace dollar)tarnished a little !!(yeah!) Now is the next problem : I tried to shine the coin with cloth and polish cream, but doing this all the blackened surface came off!! Result : ground 0...the coin is now as shiny as in the beginning... How do you polish just the little parts of the coin, without removing all the tarnished part? *returning in his labo with black fingertips....* Thanks et bonne journée ! |

Hey Lawrens. Try the bleach thing again maybe a little longer. Now lay a cloth on a table. Put the polish on the coin and rub the coin back and forth and rotate as needed. This will polish the high parts of the coin leaving the background darker. If you polish too much you will polish off all the tarnish. Good luck!

Griff,
Thank you so much for all the infos, they greatly did the job !!! It was a nice time to see my cherished Morgans turn completly black in the bleach (in France : "eau de Javel").... ^^ And then, using a shining cream to work out the coin...whow !! Excellent !! I recommend anyone wanting to give his coins the exact look one wants to apply these important infos, without fear...because you can very easily return to an all-shiny state of coin very easily. Thanks again ! ^^ |

If you do the bleach thing to tarnish the coins won't the tarnish effect be removed when you manipulate the coins with your hands? I don't want to tarnish my coins and end up with black hands LOL.....

Nope! It wont make your hands black at all. What I do after is let running water wash it down after the process then dip it in mouth wash. Why...? beats me, but it takes the nasty smell of polishing cream and it seem to make it look just right. It makes it feel slicker and not sticky.

Thanks rannie, very interesting, I just may want to give it a try. This polishing cream you talk about, is it silver polish I assume?

Silver polish if you want it tarnished but still keep the other areas mirror like in shine. For anything less than that any polish worked for me. Might as well get the silver polish that is non abraisive and just work with less. Its better to take your time rather than go wild with the polish. It takes a great amount of patience to get great results.
Later! Rannie

Thanks a lot rannie, I think I will give it a try when I get the time. I have a lot of patience, so that shouldn't be a problem. I have some silver coins I would like to try it out on, just hope I don't mess it up. Don't want to end up with the ugliest coins on the East Coast LOL.....

Thanks again rannie, you have been really very helpful here, I re-read the post again and realized you can remove it all if you don't like the outcome and that is real cool. It may take me a few tries to get what I would like, I am Polish you know, LOL.

After you tanish the coin, try a product called Never Dull. It is a type of wadding that has polish on it and comes in a can. Just pinch off a small piece and polish the areas you want highlighted. Stuff works great! When you're done just wash the coin in dishwashing liquid to remove the residue. It took me a few tries to get the results that I wanted on my coins, but was well worth the effort. Cheers!

Hi rannie, I really appreciate that, I mean about the PM thing. I really don't have the facilities here to take any pictures, but I will see what I could do. I would love for you to see the babies you helped me create, they are 1921 Morgan silver dollars and the details came out so beautiful especially in the back where the eagle is. It looks like I spent 100 hours doing them, but it did take about 3 hours, I think I may have left them in the bleach a bit too long.....

Yes, the tips are really excellent...I try with "Peace" silver dollar, but the design of the coin is very worned, so the difference between the background and the higher parts, is not as evident than with the Morgan dollars... Now I'll apply this to my halves too... By the way, do you have time to hit the drum?? Best, |
