Hello Everyone,
I have a big question, and need some help. I have recently came up with a design that has added many additional improvements and twists to a popular jim steinmeyer illusion. The end result is much different than the origional, but still may infringe on his design. So i was wondering how to go about trying to have the illusion built, and possibly marketed. I want to protect my idea, and possibly offer it to the magic community. What should i do, contact him, and fax the plans, or what? Any input would be great, thanks.

Absolutely contact Jim. Like Gaughan, Jim Steinmeyer is impeccable and would most likely be a boon and a help to you in your endeavor as long as you don't infringe on any of his original ideas.
Mind you, some ideas are are born of more than one mind and sometimes it depends on who came up with the idea first, and how much of a gentleman you can be to admit the fact. I hope it has nothing to do with Origami, as that is totally Jim Steinmeyer, and is one of the most brilliant adaptations of a number of different principles that has hit magic in a long time. |

Thank you all very much for your input. I will be contacting Mr. Steinmeyer very soon. I do have a few more questions though. How do i protect my idea. Not that i believe that he or any of you are dishonest, but im sure everyone understands about protecting their creative ideas. Should i call, or write him, with out actually telling him the effect, and just explain whats different? Or will a fax protect my idea, because it is dated? Thank you all very much.
Sincerely,
-Beau Alexander

Take out a patent search. This will cost you some cash but this is how all original ideas are protected from duplication...in theory anyways.
And yes, talk to him about your idea...as I said before, he is an impeccable gentleman, not a thief in case that is what you are worried about. |
