A client contacted me several months ago for a performance that would be July 30. She said she wanted to pay by credit card, her child care center was part of a company that took too long to cut checks. Fine, pay me through PayPal. Could she pay all at once, instead of a separate deposit and balance? Sure. (Sometimes people like to pay me up front.) And what is my PayPal account ID?
Weeks later, oh, all at once meant could she skip the deposit? Because then she wouldn't have to put in to her company twice to be reimbursed. And what is my PayPal account ID? So today I email a confirmation with a line that says when I waive the deposit I do request payment before the performance commences (for people with confusing long stories who have failed to answer emails or make sense). She calls back, oh she's been trying to pay me all weekend, but she was going to use her husband's PayPal account but he had money in it and they would have used that, so he moved it, but still set her up an account to pay me. The account or payment wasn't going to go through until she got a code off her credit card statement and entered it in PayPal. (No idea what that means). She says she can try to get a check from her company but that will take weeks. I tell her that's why I request deposits, to work this kind of kink out of the system. Needless to say I won't be there. She asked "Should I cancel? I've got people coming, I could send letters to everyone and tell them you won't be coming..." I'm not threatened in the least. I offer to let her reschedule for a date after she's got a payment, but all her time is full. Too bad. I really wanted to be scammed this week. Nothing else to do. |

She decided to get the funds to me. So we're back on. They came through PayPal, so I'm pretty safe on that score.
So not only is the last post too long, it's moot now. |

Somehow I get the feeling that we haven't heard the last of this -- I'm sure she'll somehow manage to screw something up before it's all done.
I have learned the hard way to be wary of people who seem disorganized and unresponsive (unintentionally or on purpose) when I first deal with them. In my experience, things only deteriorate from that point forward. SETH

Seth, you are so right! While I hope for the best in this case, I've learned that if a deal has problems right from the start, things only get worse. I usually pass on the deal.
