I've been asked (pleaded with actually) to perform strolling/mingle magic for a wedding reception. The people who want me to perform are friends of friends that saw me perform strolling magic for kids at a school function. I am primarily a kid shool show entertainer. Well, I gave in and am going to do the show. My problem, and question to all of you is "what type of effects would go over well at a wedding reception"? Obviously the sponge ball/rabbits, d-lites, rope, rubber band and ball tricks etc. that I perform for my kid and family strolling shows are just not going to work for me here.
I do not do much work with cards but do perform Ambitious and Card Warp. I think both of these will be acceptable. I really hesitated on taking this gig but these folks are good friends of good friends and having them all pressure me to do this I had a hard time turning them down. Now I really want to make sure that they are not disappointed with the outcome. This will be a formal event of about 250 to 350 people. I have about 6 months to prepare some new material. Thanks for any help and suggestions that you can provide! Wolly

Believe it or not most of the effects you listed can work for adults. You'll most likely be strolling from table to table so pack effects that are visible and reset easily.
I know you have 6 months, but I would stick with what you're already comfortable with. Just tweak your presentations for adults. |

You NEED to learn some version of Anniversary Waltz. Doc Eason teaches a fine version on his videos and I belive he aslo sells a manuscript.

Most magic should be acceptable.

I honestly don't see why you think that some of these won't work. Anyway, some suggestions. These pack small don't require a working surface. - Finger Ring and Cord Routine - See 'World's Greatest Magic' DVD. - Not sure if you do coin magic so maybe buy 'Hopping Halves' by Johnson. - 'Homing Card' – Carlisle, 'Stars of Magic'. - Perhaps Doc Eason's 'Anniversary Waltz'. - 'Current Classic' from Carneycopia. Nice 2 sponge routine for strolling. If you do get to work on a surface .... - Roth's 'Winged Silver'. - Vernon's 'Triumph'. - 'Las Vegas Leaper' – Harris. Hope this helps. Good luck. |

I just performed at a wedding reception a few weeks ago.
Guess what went over really well. Sponge Balls, Ambitious Card, Card to Wallet, Coin Flurry to Jumbo Coin, CSB (copper silver brass)etc. My advice is to involve the guests. Ask questions like "Who is the most skeptical person here at the table?" Who shuffles cards really well? Who's the most trustworthy? The interactions from the people at the table will be the main ingredient to your performance. Give them the opportunity to participate and to laugh at each other. Just relax and have fun. Don't feel like you have to be "Super Magic Man". Do have a special effect for the bride and groom. I performed a version of Anniversary Waltz and the videographer taped the performance. I also wanted to mention I went to a party store and picked up one of those blinking lapel lights in the shape of a heart. I placed it on their hands which was on top of the deck of cards. They kissed to make the magic happen while the heart was blinking. Needless to say it was a special moment for them. They kept the heart light and the new deck of cards I used for the effect.( Did I just give my idea away?) Just have fun !!! because that's what the guests want to have. David Paul

First you MUST restrain yourself from backhanding the groom and yelling "moron!" at him. Other than that you have some good material that will work. Not sure why you don't think it will work. Have fun and all that.

Don't ask whether they got a prenup, either. The effects you have written there are good, though, keep'em and give them more adult patter. I do a gambling spongeball routine. Just fix what you already have.

Ooh, Eddie just gave me a great idea for next wedding season; Torn and Restored Prenup!

I love it Pepka! You can patter how your lawyer told you to get a prenup so you did and when you saw your bride you tore it up! Then you can show the pieces saying how each one represents "she started nagging, and complaining, and wanting a new house and to quit her job and....good thing I know magic" and it restores! Cool!
Oh, what is that routine with the band called? Where you tear the band and it is a big circle then again tear it and it is intertwined? Pakistan Bands or something like that? That is a good one for the floor, easy to do. Afghan Bands I think it is. One thing, hit the bride and groom before the food comes and do a special trick for them, a version of Anniversary Card is great, because after that point the odds of you catching them is slim and none and they will expect a trick. |

Definitely Anniversary Waltz... And just as everyone else said, everything you mentioned that you do for kids would be just fine for adults. Just make sure that your patter isn't geared toward children.
Bust out the invisible deck... ring on string... if people will be smoking do vanishing lit cigarette using a TT. Any of the free tricks on my newsletter would work (Sorry about the shameless plug: sign up it's free - see my signature below) |

Anniversary Waltz, or some variation of it - this can actually end up being quite a special moment - not bad for a card trick!
As others have said, the material which you have should actually work out just fine. It's not what you do but the way that you do it! Cheers, David.

My apologies.
I said above that 'Anniversary Waltz' don't require a working surface. The routines in the Eason manuscript do use a table. It is possible to use the spectators hands but because of what I said it's got me thinking about a good in-hands Waltz. |

Thanks all for your suggestions and words of encouragement! It looks as though I really need to learn Anniversay Waltz. It sounds that there may be different versions of this effect, ie. table vs. in hands. I will have to research this and probably learn both.
(Note to David Paul: Do you mind if I use your idea?) I am glad that everyone feels that most of the effects that I currently perform will work in this performance. I will of course, as suggested, change my patter and presentation. I will also have to change my persona from the silly one I use for the kids to something more sophisticated. I guess I thought that the effects I usually perform were not elegant or sophisticated enough for a formal occasion. I am enthused that so many of you feel that presented correctly I can use the effects I have been doing for years and feel comfortable with. I will research all of your suggested effect ideas to see which I will be able to learn to performance standards in the six months I have to prepare for the performance. I will also need to drop a few pounds to fit back in my old Tux! Altough maybe mine is out of fasion and will need to purchase a new one. Are they still wearing wide lapels and cummerbunds? I want to thank everyone once again not only for the effects suggested but most of all the words of encouragement. I have to admit that up until reading some of your comments I was rather nervous about doing this gig. I am feeling better about it now. As mentioned in my original post I am primarily a kids school show entertainer. This may open a new venue for me. Thanks! Wolly

I wouldn't be too concerned about "elegant or sophisticated". People want to have a good time.
Does anyone here think that if you wear a tux at a wedding reception that you might be seen as one of the wedding party? Just wondering if more casual and colorful attire might be better. |

Jaz, that is a good point. Maybe a Tux is not what I want to wear....

No matter what you wear you'll have to show yourself as a magician either by talking or doing a quicky visual so if you are going to feel comfortable with the tux, just stay with it and decide on a couple of openers.
One effective way is to; if there are candles on the table; to reach out with a flash paper and turn into an interesting object (that you start a routine with) and ask them if they wanna see a show(while showin the object in your hand) |

Last thing, do Anniversary Waltz ONLY for the wedding couple...do not do it for anyone else.
