This sawing illusion is a lot cheaper than a bow saw illusion, but is it effective, or does it just look cheap and silly?
Visible Sawing - Mak Perform the famous SAWING A GIRL IN HALF ILLUSION A Neat portable method using a power saw. A real feature effect that packs in a suitcase with the rest of your show. Borrow a girl right out of the audience. Place her on any table and cover her middle with the wooden frame. The power jigsaw is started up and you run it right thru the frame and out the other side. The noise and excitement of this thrilling effect! The Blade is seen POWERED before penetrating the spectator! ALSO the Blade is POWERED as it exits the waist! Can be performed ANYWHERE even close-up and surrounded, without fear. Comes complete and ready to go including a Real Saw (brand new), beautiful lacquered wooden frame and full instructions. Manufactured by Mak |

I have used a visible sawing for years, not Mak, but the same basic thing.
Packs small / Plays big. Years ago I saw a Mak one and it looked fine. I have had several Mak item and they (the items they make) hold up. My sawing is more rustic and the saw is old and clunky looking. It does not look like a magic prop. You can always change the look of the frame. The saw is a real B&D (or it was at the time) saw. Always wanted a bow saw but when you fire up your electric saw the audience will pay attention. For the price and the impact I say get one. |

T. House, it would depend more on your presentation than the prop itself.
Visible sawing has been around for a long time a people still love it. I still do the head version called a head zopper, it works the same just on the neck. I get great response from it, and a lot of laughs. I've always felt this was a good buy.

Wanmagic,
Are you referring to any version in particular? What differences are there in the various models? Bruce |

I performed it for years. It is worth the money. But now I do not use it, I close with Chair Suspension.
Pros: Good closer. Easy to carry around. Crowd never figures out how it works. Five seconds to re-set. Great to use on the star of the party. 100% safe. Can be performed on a bare floor. (might need a towel for the filling) Saw and blade can be examined at the begining. Cons: Some young kids will cry because of the noise or blade. It is not angle proof close-up. No electricity at certain outside areas. Best to perform on a board. You might need to carry one with you. (supports for the board are needed too). You might have a hard time finding someone with the courage. |

It can be done with different jig saws. I only noticed Mak using the Black & Decker brand. I am presently holding a black "Black & Decker" model in my avatar. Mak will send you the cheapest "corded" Black & Decker jig saw. Here is a list of their "Corded" Jig Saws: http://www.blackanddecker.com/ProductGui......496.2052 On the same page I see a "cordless" jig saw. You will be able to buy the "cordless" one from a hardware store, and add it to Visible Sawing if you have no eletricity around you.

I used to use the Visible Sawing / Jig Saw.
It makes for a good, suspenseful, comedic routine... BUT... Is this trick actually FOOLING anybody? I mean, really? Does it create a "how the heck did he do that?" moment? I don't think so. I sold mine. It was cool too. I repainted it so it was yellow and black "warning" stripes, and the board was a yellow and black large caution sign, with stripes at the edges, and the supports were plastic fold-up sawhorses from like Home Depot or something. Black and Yellow. And I "tied" the spectator to the board using caution tape. It LOOKED good. The build-up was good. But I just had serious doubts about whether the actual EFFECT was good enough. Just my two cents.

I just bought one a couple of months ago. I bought it off of ebay and it did not come with the blade to start off with. I had a hard time finding a replacement blade for it. I contacted Mak and they put me on the right track to making a new one. I have not used it in my show yet but I have a show this week that I will be using it. I was worried about the fact that if you perform it outdoors you might not have power. I researched getting a cordless jig saw but had a hard time finding one that would fit the cut guide on the effect. I did find one but decided I would wait and get it later. I have heard they play really well depending on the age of the audience. I would say buy one and see for yourself. For the price of one you can't really go wrong. Look around for a used one first before you buy new. I have seen them on the Café' every once in awhile. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

We used it in a haunted house scene for a couple years (along with other magical torture props such as the guillotine and interlude). It worked great, especially with the loud sound from the saw.

If you can pull off comedy magic this is an awesome prop. I would not try and use it as a serious sawing act even though it does have a perceived element of danger. In the right hands this effect will totally entertain. I have seen it effectively used as a mid show illusion and as a show closer depending on scope of show. Beauty of this effect is it's cheap, small, nerve rattlingly noisy, and has so much room for comedic effect. I do suggest making or having a folding portable table made for putting spectator on. I made one that contains the whole illusion. It plays huge for the amount of room it takes up.

I had a table made for me that houses the whole unit. Works great for school shows where I saw the principal in half!
But ... I'm not quite happy with the routine yet. Anyone have any comedy bits they would like to share. I once read about someone who manufactured huge bandaids, and would give one to the person sawn asunder, so they didn't fall apart. I've been unable to locate them online. Brian |

If you have a chair suspension that could work as a table as well. I used to use that,
Thanks,
