Hey all,
Just thought I'd throw out a few ideas on lighting. A good basic book on lighting that I had in film school and still reference is: "Cinematography" by Kris Malkiewicz. There is some good info on basic lighting techniques, using a light meter, and diff. kinds of camera's and lighting systems. Another one that helped me a lot early on: The Five C's of Cinematography: Motion Picture Filming Techniques. Great for learning how to shoot for editing. Nothing beats just doing it though. There are also some great director's commentaries out there. A few of my favorites are; anything by Guillermo del Toro, Coppola, Steven Soderbergh, David Fincher, Anthony Minghella, just to name a few. Check out fxphd.com for some great online post production classes. They're a little pricey, but they are so worth it. Homer, I highly recommend the Panasonic Hpx170. I've used it's predecessor quite a bit, the hvx200, shooting in 24p advanced. A friend of mine shot a feature with this camera and it held up really well on the big screen. Any plans for your next DVD? I think on a another post you mentioned maybe doing the pencil routine? That would be amazing! I saw you perform that routine at magi-fest when I was in high school and it absolutely blew me away! Very inspiring! Cheers, -Todd |

Todd,
Funny that you mention it I've eye-ing the hpx170 ever since it was announced. I researched the workflow and I think its a good step towards progressive and variable frame rates. It will just be an expensive step up since the rest of my system has to step up slightly; AJA loHD, DVCProHD deck for deliverables and I would love an HD monitor for grading and secondary grading. Do you think I could get by with just the hvx170 without the peripherals mentioned? I just did a project that needed the final to be DVCPro HD but the deck is so expensive. Luckily they were able to take HDV, which is what I was shooting anyway. Homer |

Hi Homer,
I think you could get by without the extra peripherals. The HD decks are obscenely expensive. I personally would not invest in one. Working with a good post house might be a good and cheaper option for when you need to have deliverables in DVCPro. I'm not familiar with any in Las Vegas but I can ask around. The professional Sony HD color correct monitors are the way to go if you are going to be doing a lot of color work and outputting to HD or using it for broadcast. I do all my color correction work on an apple cinema display (it's pretty accurate) and then I test my final on several different tv monitors. With videos for the web and DVD's (unless you're outputting HD DVD's) there is a little more latitude than doing something that will be projected or used for broadcast. The workflow with shooting to P2 cards is nice too. No more digitizing. The other nice thing about the hvx170 (and all the panasonics) is that there is a great lens adapter kit for it which allows you to shoot with prime lenses to really control the depth of field. That combined with shooting in progressive gets you pretty close to looking like film. Hope that helps. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Cheers, -Todd |

Homer,
Also keep your eye out for the RED Scarlet 3K HD camera. There is talk of it's release in early 2009. -Todd |

I love red. Out of my budget and work flow though, for now. I really do not need 3k!
