Magic and mentalism are both arts of performance. Do you think mentalists are too arrogant next to a magician?

Depends on which one is French.

Mike, I believe that branches of theatrical magic (defined as the branches of the art that rely heavily upon acting and strong theatrical skills to sell the effect) such as bizarre magic and mentalism requires a certain level of formality. You simply can't approach reading a mind, levitating an object and performing PK touches in the same manner you would Hippity Hop Rabbits or torn and restored newspaper.
If this makes the mentalist appear more arrogant, then it's likely due to the necessity of this theatrical presence and character. My opinion.

Mentalism seems more centered around the self. They are the magic, it happens in their minds.
Magicians use words and wands and magic items. The magic happens in our hands and under covers. I do think I'd have more fun hanging out with Kreskin than Angel.

? probably seem that way around the folks who think it's all about props and flash without having any character or audience dynamic. Or worse - start asking about how their stuff works as if it were just a matter of props or sleights.

Mentalist are not funny, I could never be a mentalist, because I think of myself as a prop comedian.
Who cares if anyone is arrogant, or not, I have to be true to myself. When I make people laugh, they pay me money, and invite me to eat with them the closeup, illusionists, escape artists, and mentalist all admire me.

“Pick a card any card” said the magician to the mentalist. “I will pick the one you're thinking of if you like” came the reply.

It is hard to explain. Better yet, I will send you the name of the only one in this entire forum. After you see that person's name, I'm sure you have it from there.

I think that several mentalists have fashioned their character for an archetype and are often perceived as distant.

Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Egocentrism among escapologists is a problem I largely lay at the feet of Houdini, who went out of his way to destroy the competition and 'prove' that he was 'the world's greatest.' Too many escapists have taken Houdini's approach as 'the way to do it.' I don't. On the plus side, we have a convention once every two years, and we get along just fine.
