I very much enjoy performing, but I do not do it professionally. I have been enjoying magic for well over a decade and have several books and dvds. My problem is that I find that most routines to have some degree of a tell or moment where something happened even though the spectator may not know exactly what. I would love some recommendations for tricks or other utility moves that adhere to the following:
- Can be done with a borrowed deck or business cards (even if I have to manipulate it a little) - Can be performed slowly and looks extremely fair (this is the most important point for me, I am okay with some sleights as long as they can be accomplished invisibly and naturally where is appears nothing happened) I am genuinely interested in help and would be happy to answer any questions that would arise from this post. A little more info on me. I do not have time to spend hours a day practicing and I very much like simple tricks. I know many times posts like this get questions on what type of things the poster likes or what do you currently perform so I will include a few of the things I do that bring me much joy in the hopes of adding a few more similar items. These are partially utility moves which is why I added that above: - Riffle force - mental reveal - Peak - mental reveal (I love Danny Archer's card peaks and a peak from the PSI series, I think volume 3 with a business card) - Nail nick - I find card by reading pulse of spectator. All of these effects or utilities, seemingly nothing happens and everything is handled very minimally with examinable everything. Thanks again. Chad |

A terrific trick that meets your criteria is Vernon's 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind'. I have never failed to get freaked out amazement at this one.
-Can be done with a borrowed and shuffled deck -Only requires knowing how to do a jog shuffle -Definitely a mental flavored effect Can also be gotten from Ammar's ETMCM #5 (I think).

Pre-prefiguration on Mark Elson's DVD "Before I get" is a self-worker from a shuffled deck in use. don't forget the great old standards, "Out of This World" and "Gemini Twins" and "Untouched." Great places to start. Good luck.

Like you, I also LOVE to perform simple and strong card magic, preferably with mental flavour.
These are some of my favorites (would probably have remembered even more if I had my little black book nearby ) Impromptu OOTW by Lorayne Swindle of Sorts by Curry (Ayres has some good effects with it, too) Devastation by Beam Quadruple Prediction by Beam Miraskill by James (Or version of this - Mirabill by Cushman) Simply Divine by Sankey Lottery by Sankey Rescue 2000 by Ayres Hummingbird by Ayres Know Way! by Ayres Ways & Means by Ayres (As you can see, for such simple mental card magic I strongly suggest Mick Ayres's material and Steve Beam's books too) |

Thank you for the recommendations... it is much appreciated. I will be researching these items in the near future.
I am not at all familiar with Mick Ayres, if you had to start with one item what would it be? Thanks again. |

His material is super simple but strong (he's been fooling and entertaining numerous people and earning his bread with this material), you get effects, patter, everything routined, you even get what he says in between the effects. I would suggest you to buy PredictAbilities first because it has little more material then Hoodwinkings which is great too. Noetic License is his latest release which I still haven't had time to deeply go through but just by the first reading I already love the material and will be introducing some of it in my repertoire. I'd go with PredictAbilities first, maybe someone else who likes Mick's works will give his opinion, too, with what to begin. Btw, another simple and strong one that I've been having fun with lately and forgot to add it to my last post is Three Proofs by Daugherty from Apocalypse. |

Thanks for all of the advice. I am going to look into getting some Mick Ayers material. I will let you know my thoughts if anyone is interested.
Harry, which book are you recommending vol. 1 or 2? Thanks. Chad |

I think Rick Maue has some great card work that fits the bill. HE is a first rate mentalist and his lecture well worth seeing - I have rarely been fooled that bad ina lecture context.
Also Derren Brown's Devil's Picturebook is probably the best compendium of mentalism themed card effects (IMHO.) Pay particular attention to volume 3. IT may seem somewhat impractical, but I have been using several of the principals in my regular restaurant work.

Chad: Just saw your post/question. How can I recommend one over the other. THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, VOL. 1 is my re-write, updating, etc., of Close-Up Card Magic, Personal Secrets, My Favorite Card Tricks, Deck-Sterity, The Epitome Location, and more. How in the world can you go wrong?! THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, VOL. 2 is the re-write, updating, etc., of Reputation-Makers, Rim Shots and Afterthoughts. How in the world can you go wrong?! Obviously, I recommend them both. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

"Diplopia" from Paul Vigil and also "Miraskill," a free (and nicely reworked) variation of which ("A View to a 'Skill") is currently available on John Bannon's site.

Another terrific simple strong card trick that also has a mental flavor is Clutch by Oz Pearlman. It kills every time.

Magicmancas,
out of the 2 Classic Collection books from Harry Lorayne, I like a lot Classic Collection 1, because it has Close up card magic that is a terrific book, maybe his best in my opinion and also has My favorite cards trick that has an impromptu version of OOTW that is a great trick. Either one will be great, by the way you need to understand that these are not little books, more than 400 pages so it is a lot of material on cards. It is a good buy for the price. Hope this helps |
