Throw in a bag of microwave popcorn...
Whip up the baloney sandwiches... Call in the kids, the wife, or the mother-in-law (O.K. maybe not the Mother in Law- on second thought have HER make the baloney sandwiches!) and...Behold.............. The Holy Grail (?) of all you tube "tutorials".......................... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I16cTvnCXJo&NR=1 The future of magic?

To quote the principal from Billy Madison
Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. |

(If you watch the entire video you will see that he also (like some of our contemporary magicians) utilizes editing to help clarify what is a real scattered mess. Isn't it interesting that he intuitively knows that he needed an edit here and there to help things along and that he chose in favor of technological assistence over technique. I post this not to malign the efforts of someone new to magic. In fact I hesitated for a second thinking that posting this might only further the "exposure". Or hurt or discourage this young man's feelings if he happens to read this. But, as you can see from the comments below the video- this "tutorial" is so confusing that no one can even seem to follow what is going on. I have only recently begun to to look at a few of these you tube demonstrations and it reveals a sad state of affairs as concerns the process of learning to perform magic. In other videos the comments generally go something like this-- "Awesome man...where can I learn it- will you put up a tut?" Although I am at a loss for any real data, I believe there exists a fairly large percentage of young people who follow this paradigm. I think that the kids are watching the various videos- piecing together/ reverse engineering the effects and then imediately teaching them. The satisfaction that would have been gained by reading / practicing / and then performing for a real audience; has transformed into instant gratification. Any negative comments are ignored and deflected by cyber-annoynimity. Any deficiencies are imediatly overcome by the use of text- music- and editing. I'm not trying to make any kind of political statement here- I'm not angry or saying magic is "going down the tubes" but I do find all of this interesting---especailly when considering the motivations of the youths in these videos in contrast to the motivation for demonstrating magic in the first place. Luke: "Master Yoda, is the dark side stronger?" Yoda: "No, no...quicker, easier, more seductive."

I made a comment on YouTube regarding a "tutorial" for the Self Tying Shoelaces. I basically said it wasn't his trick and he was ripping off the creator. I got some interesting replies including one person requesting I suck a particular part of his anatomy and another saying "So what? David Blaine has a ton of cash. His kids won't starve." Apparently he had no idea that:
1. It wasn't Blaine's trick and 2. David Blaine doesn't have any kids. I was also told it wasn't stealing, just someone showing how it was done. |

Dope song, though. Haven't listened to it in a minute. Timbaland always kills it.

Yes, another good observation. The comments below the videos often give props for song selection. It is a pre-requisite to select a good song to go with your trick. It is all part of the experience.
