Hey all. I recently watched a Japanese tv show showing off tricks. The one that caught my eye was I think called 'Wow', although I might be wrong, since I don't speak Japanese. They may have just been exclaiming 'wow'!
Anyway, the trick is: Card is signed and put in deck. A plastic slip (that fits around 1 card) is then shown, shaken slightly, and the signed card is revealed - appearing before your eyes in the slip. What is the name of this trick, and where can I get it? Thanks, Matt. |

I have never liked this trick. Is it visual? Yes! But someone PLEASE TELL ME what is the "MOTIVATION" for putting a card into a plastic slip? It makes absolutely NO SENSE to me!

It's the Magic Plastic Slip of Mystery! It needs no other motivation than to show you what it does!!

A pointless effect. Watch as I take this $50 slip of plastic and let IT do the magic for me! Ta Da!

I pretty much have the same thoughts as Chris on this one. I did see someone use some sort of justification (talking about it being the thing you put baseball cards in), but even that was sort of thin.

I own WOW. Recently I performed it for my daughter, who has had to put up with my magic for all 25 years of her life. I love this effect, but she said that she preferred magic where I didn't have any special cases. Interesting.

Yup, it is Masuda's Wow.
I put my namecard in the card sleeve and hence subtly introduce the sleeve when give out my namecard in the beginning. My motivation for putting in the card into the sleeve is simple, I talk about isolating the card away from the others. Have never had anyone questioning it, and got very strong reactions. |

Is it visual? Yep! So is a color change that you can perform WITHOUT a stupid little sleeve. It's so silly and makes so little sense.

Chris is dead on. I've seen it, but I really can't stand working with anything that just looks so....proppy. Yes, I'm aware of the argument that we use unusual props all the time. Coins that are over 100 years old, fancy wands, silver cups etc. That's a bit different though. There's just something about a little piece of plastic. I honestly would not feel comfortable charging my clients what I do when I pull out a little piece of plastic to perform a trick.

Ok, I will defend this prop with a valid reason because a prop is a prop and it is what you do with it that counts.
First, start out with a 6H in it. Why? It is your favorite card. You keep it in a special case to keep it clean and will not bend. I do a trick proving why it is my favorite card after I ask what their card is like think, touch and turn (MALONE) where it flips over 3 times so fast then I apparently put it back into wow. You then do the KICKER as you patter if they'd be impressed if your favorite card was their favorite card. This prop can be used with justification to take the heat of it. Additionally, starting off with the 6h is a nice convincer. |

Actually, holding the sleeve up against a window clearly shows to the spectators that it is absolutely empty. What about isolating the card from everything?

Plus the Godfather here has a wonderful effect I remember using this prop. I'm sure he'd share it with folks that have the prop. It's pretty neat.

The more gradual the change the more magical. As opposed to using any sleight where the change is instant. Both are just as visual, but I feel the psychology is different. For WOW audiences actually see the card transforming. Personally I really like WOW, but to each his own I guess. |

Don't use WOW, it isn't any good. Please forget about it. That way it is more exclusive for me when I perform it professionally. Sometimes I wonder about people who never use something every day but still know it all.

WOW, like any utility device, is only as good as the presentation. Get the ungimmicked sleeve and routine your effect so that at the end you leave the ungimmicked sleeve on the table (don't call any attention to it, just leave it alone). If anyone bothers to pick it up (and I'm surprised at how few actually do), they will find exactly what you said it was: a plastic card holder. The visual transformation of the card in the context of a great presentation is just too good to pass up, even if it does introduce this "thing" you will need to find an explanation for.

I saw a magician (Danny Magic) use 2 of them simutaneously at the end of a multiple card find for a table of clients and of course I thought to myself "Wow!" nice gimmicked sleeves. I want one too.

As with most props (not all) if one takes the time and simply does not rush into just performing the "trick" itself one can come about with a reason for it being present or used. It all relies on how you, as a performer, wishes to present it and how much work your willing to devote to it before just rushing out and doing it.
Think about "Twisted Sisters" (a FANTASTIC effect) and for that matter, most packet tricks. Why on earth would a magician bring out a folder or card holder with only eight cards in it? Quote:
lylemagic wrote: Then by the same token what’s the purpose of placing half dollars in an Okito coin box? A box made of solid brass that no one has ever seen before! But yet, they have been around for years and more than likely will continue to be around long after I’m gone. Why….because they work! Some very eye popping coin magic can be done with them and there are different styles to them as in recessed bottoms, magnetic bottoms, etc. I would venture to say that there are well over 100 tricks that can be performed with them and I believe there is even a book devoted just to the Okito coin box. Now, by your logic, why on earth would a magician bring out a solid brass box that admittedly looks a bit odd/suspicious and has never been seen before and place a coin or coins in it? Why not perform the same little miracle by merely placing the coins in ones hand and get rid of that funky looking brass box! What is the MOTIVATION”? Very simple answer….the box works and at times does most of the work. It’s a tool to an end. In all the years that I have used it I’ve never had anyone question it nor do I believe that any magician has been questioned or have the spectators questioned it in their minds. With that said I’ve only seen the video and do not own “WOW” although it does look interesting. There are quite a few tricks where the magician would like to switch out something that is gimmicked for the same thing that is not. From what I can ascertain is that WOW cannot be examined by the spectator albeit more often than not this should not prove to be a problem. However, I believe that Stevens Magic Emporium carries the Ungimmicked WOW case for those that own this trick and may want to have it on hand if they wish to make a switch and casually place it on the table for examination. ~gaffed~
