Hi Paul,
What would your suggestions to us be in regards to getting the most from our magic? We all have too much stuff. What do you do, what have you done, what disciplines can you bestow upon us so that we can be the best we can be at our craft? Dave

I either read or heard from someone, you took some advice in a book seriously to not do magic til you were ready and you postponed performing for a long time. Is this true and how long did you practice til you thought you were ready and how did you know you were ready?

David,
Depending on your goals I think Gene Anderson's approach was interesting. He did not do magic professionally but he concentrated on learning a small number of routines very very well. But Gene does those routines better than anyone else. It does not matter much what it is, it matters that people say "Have you seen Dave do the ________________ ?(fill in the blank). And that happens when you learn to do something better than anyone else out there. Paul |

Shomemagic,
That is a reference to the fact that I got interested in magic when I was 10 years old but I did not start performing professionally and taking paid jobs until I was 20 years old and had been practicing magic for 10+ years. At the time I was practicing there were many magicians my age making money working birthday parties etc. but I did not feel I was ready to be paid a fee so I waited. I knew I must be ready when people started asking me to come and perform at events like cocktail receptions etc. I did a lot of performing for friends and family parties (I have a large extended family, 54 first cousins) so I had lots of people to perform for I just did not start doing it professionally for pay until I felt I was ready. Others say you should work as much as possible, anywhere you can and I agree, but I just wanted to make sure that before I charged a fee I had some skills. I pet peeve is the magician that has been in magic for a year and then has business cards printed up and is available for hire. I think they would be better served spending time learning the art as opposed to trying to book shows. Paul |
