I thought I'd start a thread to ask what people felt were highlights of Mindvention 2008.

So it doesn't just become a long list I'll offer this:

Favourite Performance Moment (tie) The guys from Turkey! and Paul Vigil's Card Calling.
Favourite Lecture Moment. Christopher Taylor handing out business cards and paperclips
Favourite Personal Moment... meeting Tom and Ernie, hanging with Jeremy and Eric.
Favourite Purchase... I couldn't afford Christopher Taylor's Solstice or The Shakespeare Book Test but I bought Looch's "Your Thoughts are Mine"-- and love it!
Weirdest Moment: Taping a Director's Cut effect with Peter Nardi.
Favourite Quotes: Lior Manor: "Or as we say in Hebrew, 'Billet'" and Docc Hillford:"And I'm all wrong, right?"
and Berk: "What's wrong with a Cat?"
Moment Most Regretted Missing: Marco Fida finding a paperclip in the Casino.

I like when Lior asked the spectator to "center tear the paper".

Don't forget Luke's unforgettable lecture.

Favorite Lecture: I'd have to say it's a tie between two of the strongest public speakers I've had the pleasure to hear: Rick Maue and Docc Hilford.
Maue is inspiring, and Docc's "tips" were invaluable.

Most entertaining performance: Marc Spellman (now THAT'S one funny dude)

Most daring, risky and fearless lecture: Luke Jermay, questioning EVERYTHING we do, EVERTHING we are (and are not), and how we think of ourselves. Bravo, Luke.

Memorable moments for me:

Most memorable of all, was getting to know Jack Kent Tillar. What a kind, brilliant man, and what a life he's lived. We hit it off instantly, and I truly hope we stay in touch. He has SO much to offer in SO many fields of study.
Another highlight was Becker and Earle generously giving me about a couple hours of their time to wax philosophical about scripting and performance, and providing me with incredible food for thought.

Best booth: Not even a contest. Craig Filicetti. This guy is already revolutionizing microchip mentalism

Just as a matter of interest may I ask why it didn't happen? I mean didn't ANYONE bother asking during the whole meet? I'm not interested in negatively bashing Jermay, my question is asked because I simply would like to know how such a group could get together without one single assertive person in the group. Unless nobody there had ordered it of course.

Hmmmm, my above post is interesting. I wrote it in reply to someone jokingly writing that everyone stood up and asked Luke Jermay during his lecture why he hadn't posted their stuff. But now that post has disappeared... strange!!!

Had a royal hoot there. This year's convention seemed solid and valuable (with the exception of The Energizer A.H.)...learned more valuable information in Maue's lecture in 20 minutes than in 3 hours of...never mind.

All the lectures were solid and valuable, the performers seemed to be really ON. Great chance to see Lior, his personality and his work, Zamora the torture king, Paul Draper sang and gave a great lecture on The Magician's Journey,...and the chance to see Luke Jermay (I didn't know he was so funny...didn't he used to be a lot darker in mood?), Spellman, The Hilarious Turks (their show was almost a gift to us) and others was as much a professional opportunity as it was a personal joy.

You got to see the effects, the approaches and personalities that you'd love to do, and also the ones you'd avoid like the plague. That saves a lot of money buying the wrong stuff, as you can see it being performed, and also steers you to the stuff you personally like...and seeing those effects performed with others' takes on them was very valuable. I don't get a chance to see much Mentalism performed by others, so I was eating it all up. Eye candy, brain candy.

The All Star show was the best so far, I thought, tho I did miss last year's get together. It was bright, fast funny and GOOD, the time flew by. Rare for a Mentalism show.

Loved meeting new people (Hi Dave) and getting new ideas and new approaches.

Besides the effects, the personalities and the fun, I did get solid business ideas and concepts that made the whole trip, the whole expense well worth the expense. I will be able to adjust my marketing to be more effective for MY market and MY customers, thanks to Maue's lecture, and got concepts I can internalize (Draper). Well worth the trip.

And of course the Oyster Bar at the hotel is the best.

...and missed seeing old friends from past years that couldn't be there this year.

This one was a good one.

HIGHLIGHTS:

1. Unintentionally taking up smoking again (Palace Casino is designated as Las Vegas' 'Chain-Smoking' venue)
2. "Almost" drinking some of the Joel Kool-Aid (Some may have fallen on my collar, which has since turned a shade of two-tone pink)!
3. For the first time being able to define what it is that I do in a single statement....are you ready for it..."I'M A MIND-EATER!" Hmm, maybe I got that wrong, it was late, I had been drinking, and, I'll admit that I was hungry.

Seriously;

Mindvention was a blast!

Many of the sessions were terrific - filled with new ideas, and examples of different ways of thinking. I made a number of new friends and contacts, several of whom I hope to stay in touch with. I laughed my ass off several times during presentations!

But the one thing that put it all over the top for me, was the accessibility to so many tremendously talented pros, none of whom showed anything but complete accessibility and openness to discuss what they do, and/or provide feedback on an things that I was seeking input on.

You have to have a healthy ego to do what we do, but it was my experience that the spirit of community superseded any ego issues; no one (in my experience) came across as 'too big for the room!'

It was a real pleasure meeting everyone, and congratulations to Danny & Robert, who put together a jam-packed event!

As Seth Godin says:

Too good to be true (the overnight millionaire scam)

By Seth Godin

You probably don't need to read this, but I bet you know people who do. Please feel free to repost or forward:

Times are tough, and many say they are going to be tougher. That makes some people more focused, it turns others desperate.

You may be tempted at some point to try to make a million dollars. To do it without a lot of effort or skill or risk. Using a system, some shortcut perhaps, or mortgaging something you already own.

There are countless infomercials and programs and systems that promise to help you do this. There are financial instruments and investments and documents you can sign that promise similar relief from financial stress.

Resist.

There are four ways to make a million dollars. Luck. Patient effort. Skill. Risk.

(Five if you count inheritance, and six if you count starting with two million dollars).

Conspicuously missing from this list are effortless 1-2-3 systems that involve buying an expensive book or series of tapes. Also missing are complicated tax shelters or other 'proven' systems. The harder someone tries to sell you this solution, the more certain you should be that it is a scam. If no skill or effort is required, then why doesn't the promoter just hire a bunch of people at minimum wage and keep the profits?

There are literally a million ways to make a good living online, ten million ways to start and thrive with your own business offline. But all of these require effort, and none of them are likely to make you a million dollars.

Short version of my opinion: If someone offers to sell you the secret system, don't buy it. If you need to invest in a system before you use it, walk away. If you are promised big returns with no risk and little effort, you know the person is lying to you. Every time.

It was an honor to have the opportunity to lecture and perform at this convention! Everyone was so kind and giving of their thoughts, personal time and art. I hope to see you all again soon in Las Vegas, at future conventions or at a lecture near you. :-) Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or any help that I can give you. P @ realmagic . org

Hey Paul!

I love your lecture and performance. The lecture was really helpful for this particular act I'm working on... and your performance was a fantastic demonstration of how to take a mis-step (literally) and turn it into a triumph.

Congrats mister.

Mindvention was great fun and it was really good to put actual faces to names and comments posted here on the Café. Just returned to London so I'm all out of sync and wooly..

Just want to thank all of you who attended my lecture and spent time chatting. Eric thank you for letting me pick on you constantly during my lecture.

Myself, Peter Nardi and Looch filmed a road movie which will feature my lecture, some very odd moments from our video diary and effects from Peter and Looch.

As you can imagine it is still on various tapes so it will take some time to get it all together as we had three cameras. We thought it would be great for those that didn't get the chance to attend.

Thanks again guys.. Until next time..

I am not a pro but can say I had one great time. The All Star Show was the best in Vegas.
Lets give Danny lots of credit for always getting the events started exactly on time. Very professional. Thanks Danny.

Thanks' for mentioning our Pictorial on MINDvention 2008 - http://www.magic4us.com/Pages/2008-MINDvention/2008-MINDvention.htm

We do Pictorials for many magic-conventions and this was one-of-the-best. I judge this 3-ways: first on what I see on the stage; second from what I see the audience reaction to be; and third for what I see the attendees' interaction to be.

Another bonus - as the photos show - was the number of "celebrity drop-ins" who then stayed and stayed and stayed.

Thanks all for the kind words... I thought the convention was outstanding from many different perspectives... this will be a tough one to top... next week I will start thinking about next years performers...

always interested in hearing from everyone about who they would like to see...

Max, who had to cancel this year, has said he would be interested in returning next year... also Andy Nyman has expressed interest as well... other than that I am wide open... let me know your thoughts...

We gave the featured performers a full two hours for their lectures and did a few mini-lectures at an hour each... I thought the extra time was well used...

PS Don't forget about my other close-up convention also in Las Vegas LVMI

A big round of applause for Danny and Robert. Putting Mindvention together was not an easy feat and I know for a fact...not a big money maker for them. I heard a number of attendees remarking that the registration fee was far too low for what was being offered and that they would be more than willing to pay a higher fee next year. In fact, a few first timers remarked that they were initially turned off by the low registration fee...thinking that it wouldn't be worth their time. All in all, it was an absolutely wonderful event in every way. I'm looking forward to next year! Nice seeing many of you there.

Wearing three hats (as a dealer, attendee, and lecturer), I couldn't see everything that I would have liked to see, nor meet and spend time with everyone I wanted to (Riley, did I meet you? You were on my list of folks to finally meet and don't remember meeting you), but I certainly had a great time. Although every year I have a great time. I thank everyone who attended and those that had kind words about my material. This was certainly one of the most solid cons out of the five and I've been to all five. My only regret was that I had about 2 hrs. worth of lecture material and only got time to squeeze in 1 hrs. worth. Of course, I planned that, but still . . . For those who didn't attend, maybe I'll see you next year!

Thanks again guys for all the great comments and emails that I have received... we will be making some changes for next year that I hope will improve the next MINDvention...

It was very gratifying to see the number of well-known performers that traveled to Vegas to share there time and talent along with the many attendees from abroad...

I have received some excellent suggestions for events and lecturers and programs and working together we will make these dreams into realities...
