Hey- does anyone know of any good books or routines that would work for a Christmas show with a religious tie-in?
Thanks! |

Effects using Candy Canes
Play with the idea of creating effects using Candy Canes. These are certainly inexpensive, the small ones at least, that time of year and you can use them to tell the story below...basically sharing that we shouldn't let anyone keep us from sharing Jesus. Legend has it that in the 18th Century somewhere in Europe any public display of Christianity was forbidden. (Seems like history is trying to repeat itself in parts of the world today) No crosses or Bibles were allowed and the Christians were greatly oppressed. One old man, a candy maker by profession, was particularly distressed by this. He loved the Lord with all of his heart and couldn't stand to not share that love with the world. His heart especially went out to the children when Christmas drew near and no one was allowed to have a nativity scene (or crèche`) on display in their homes. He prayed for God to show him some way to make Christmas gifts for the children which would teach them the story of Christ. The answer was the candy cane. The candy cane was in the shape of a shepherd"s staff to show them Jesus is our Shepherd and we are His flock. A sheep follows his own shepherd, knows his voice, and trusts him and knows that he is totally safe with him. The sheep will follow no other shepherd but their own. This is how we are to be with Jesus if we truly follow Him ( John 10:11; Psalm 23:1; Isaiah 40:11) Upside down the candy cane was a "J", the first letter of Jesus' name. ( Luke 1:31) It was made of hard candy to remind us that Christ is the rock of our salvation. The wide red stripes on the candy cane were to represent the blood He shed on the cross for each one of us so that we can have eternal life through Him. He redeems us and cleanses us with His shed blood - the only thing that can wash away our sin. ( Luke 22:20) . The white stripes on a candy cane represented the virgin birth, sinless life and purity of our Lord. He is the only human being who ever lived on this earth who never committed a single sin. Even though He was tempted just as we are, He never sinned. ( I Peter: 22) The three narrow red stripes on candy canes symbolized that by His stripes, or wounds, we are healed and the Trinity - the Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit. Before the crucifixion Jesus was beaten; the crown of thorns was placed on His head; His back was raw from the whip. We are healed by those wounds. He bore our sorrows and by His stripes we are healed. ( Isaiah 53:3) The flavoring in the candy cane was peppermint, which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is of the mint family and was used in Old Testament times for purification and sacrifice just as Jesus sacrificed His life for ours. ( John 19:29; Psalm 51:7) The old candy maker told them that when we break our candy cane it reminds us that Jesus' body was broken for us. When we have communion it is a reminder of what He did for us. ( I Cor. 11:24) If we share our candy cane and give some to someone else in love because we want to, it represents that same love of Jesus because He is to be shared with one another in love. ( I John 4:7,8) God gave Himself to us when He sent Jesus. He loved us so much He wants us to spend eternal life with Him... which we can do if we accept Jesus in our hearts as Savior and Lord. ( John 1:12; John 3:3,16) Some people believe this story of the candy cane is just a legend. Others believe it really happened. We do not know for sure exactly how the candy cane was invented, but there is one thing for certain... it is an excellent picture of Christ and His love for you. Posted: Nov 21, 2008 10:57am Also... Doc Haley (www.gospelmagic.com) has a couple of things that help with a Christmas program. "The Real Meaning of Christmas" and "The Christmas Papaer Tear." We've used The Real Meaning of Christmas, which is an effect with silks, in our Christmas programs. The latter could be used with the song...or at least the theme of the lyrics C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S. (I don't have this effect, so it is possible that the routine that comes with it might be good as well.) It ends with the paper being restored to say, "Happy Birthday Jesus." Anyway...here is the song if you are not familiar with it. So you might want to pick that up...very inexpensive...from Varro and see. (And even if you don't use the effect, you could gain routining ideas) C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S When I was but a youngster, Christmas meant one thing, That I’d be getting lots of toys that day. I learned a whole lot different, When my Mother sat me down, And taught me to spell Christmas this way: “C” is for the Christ child, born upon this day, “H” for herald angels in the night, “R” means our Redeemer, “I” means Israel, “S” is for the star that shone so bright, “T” is for three wise men, they who traveled far, “M” is for the manger where he lay, “A”’s for all He stands for, “S” means shepherds came, And that’s why there’s a Christmas day, And that’s why there’s a Christmas day. You could also start with these letters seperately...and have them transform into a sign that says, "Jesus...the reason for the season" or something.

I have tried to order from Doc Haley, and "Real Meaning of Christmas" has been out of stock for quite a while. I have checked with several area shops, and all have indicated that it is backordered until after this Christmas season. Good effect, but I guess it will have to wait til next year. In the meantime, I ordered "Christmas Lights" from Hank Lee, and will incorporate my own gospel message with it this year. And with due credit to Oz and Wilde, I hope to perform their Christmas take on the Stratosphere published in Christian Conjurer. The candy cane suggestion is something I'm going to utilize with the Silk Crystal Cylinder, and the flower box production (dream bag) is something I'm working on for the wise men gifts.
Wish you Godly inspiration as you prepare for your presentations. Steve |

I was surfing and found a site that has some ideas for Christmas stuff...pretty much all secular concepts, but some interesting ideas non the less...Maybe something will spark our thinking for applications...since quite a bit is shared.
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~roy/magictalk-......gic.html Specifically interesting was the idea under "Possible patter ideas / routine themes": (12)You could dress in character (rich turban, robe) and be one of the three wise men (They were called "Magi"!). Embellish a story of your journey to see the Christ child with appropriate effects. You could certainly appear things representing the gifts of the magi out of a box and talk about what they were for and how "you heard" that they were used in the life of Christ.

Try using David Ginn's version of "The real meaning of Christmas" using cards in "Charlie's Invisible Message".
We used it in Church last year on Christmas Day and it got a very good response from the packed families.

Link to "Christmas Magic", book by Duane Laflin.
This book has "for-fun" Christmas routines in it, as well as "Gospel Christmas" routines. - Donald P.S. Note - it currently appears to be out of stock.

Welcome...You don't often get on the FCM side of the discussions. Yes, it is a legend...a story...as were the parables Jesus told. But truths can be revealed through them. And that is the power of this story. And I think it is important if someone tells the story to say...it is a legend...or "the story is told"...and don't try to say it is a fact. And this has been used to tell the story about Jesus. There is also a great story to tell using candy...and that with M&Ms. Show the m on the candy and say that when Jesus was born He was laid in a Manger. Turn the m to look like a 3 and say wisemen came bringing 3 gifts...turn the m to look like an E and say they came from the East. Turn the "M" to look like a W...and say they came to Worship Him. And that wisemen still seek Him and worship Him...and sometimes eat M&Ms...and pop it in your mouth. Thanks Payne for pointing out that it is just a story...that will help people when they share the gospel. ><> J

I want to thank FX4Christ for the M&M and Candy Cane patter. I use magic as a tool teaching children sermons and in sunday school. I used the M&M patter this past sunday and I am using the Candy Cane story at one of our Christmas Services tomorrow night (with a magically appearing candy cane). I am going to preform the same routine at my upcoming IBM ring meeting (December theme is Christmas Magic).
Thank you for posting the information.

A bit nervous about the children handling the cards, but all went well. And yes, Kerry, the "markings" you described ensured that the "Jesus" card would be the last one revealed. Great effect, and plays even better than you think. Thanks again, Kerry! Steve |
