OK, gets your gun sights out, take careful aim, (preferably somewhere not fatal), and get ready. Though I already know that there is a healthy group of people who make sniping a pastime, and with Ellusionist being a fairly big target, I'm sure that there are some of you that are going to pull the trigger.
Please don't. Read what I have to say. Up until recently, I had thought, and still do, to some degree, that Daryl's Ambitious Card video, was the definitive video on the effect. I mean come on, it's great. Various phases, comedy, and that ending... I'm still trying to make a usuable gimmick. All in all, Daryl is still one of the guys I will watch... a lot. However, that said, I wasn't 100% thrilled with the rigidity of his teaching. Granted, I could have put some thought into it and tried to come up with some variations and made it more personal, but at the same time, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of variation. Someone mentioned here already (a while ago), that Ninja 2 had a perfectly usable Ambitious Routine, and I've actually combined parts of the two (Ellusionist and Daryl) to create something that I am happy with. Kudos to everyone. However, having just viewed the new Ambitious Video that's coming out soon, I must say, I am a little taken aback about how little thought I put into my routining and presentation of the effect. Seriously, a 2 hour video on the Ambitious? That's a bit much you say. I thought so, too. I stand corrected. Everything I have seen from these guys, continually moves forward. Production, quality, thought, and then some. This video was claimed to be delayed for almost a year, just to make sure that he was happy with it. Of course, that's nothing new, there are lots of products these days that are delayed by their creators for that reason. What got me about this, was the way it was laid out. There are a ton of moves on this video. Various ways of getting that darned card back to the top, that AREN'T duplicated from Daryls video. Different angles, over the shoulder, underneath, head on etc. Moves are gone over slowly, detailed, and broken down. Until recently, I thought that the pushoff DL was impossible, a fairy tale. Having actually seen it, it's a different story now. I just have to make mine a double instead of a triple, or better yet, quadruple. There are also a few performances as well, for different types of people. You've got people who sit back and think about what they saw, and reactions from people who like to jump all over the place. These are not Brad's or the producer's friends, or people who work for him who politely "golf clap" when they are supposed to. What's even better, one of the performances, he gets caught, but continues on, with a voice over, telling you what went wrong, and what he did to correct it for the next few phases. Now, between you and me, that's information. It's one thing to see something done right all the time, but what happens when it doesn't go right, or just... sorta right? Also, Ninja 1 weighed in at a 80MB download. Kind of small. This beast is a healthy 350MB+. Not exactly small. And with them starting to produce on DVD's, they are appealing to all sorts of people. (I hate rewinding tapes.) Look, I know a lot of you are just going to jump on the "I hate" or "Bad Ellusionist, get off the couch" bandwagon, but seriously. Read this, and think about it. I am not saying buy it, but I think that as time passes, Ellusionist is starting to become a quality-based company. Please, try to keep the snide remarks to a minumum. I am not naive enough to think that everyone will agree with me, but I am mature enough to recognize someone's shortcomings, and try to look past what they've done in the past, to see what they are doing in the present, and have planned for the future. David. |

Nice review! That was a good balanced contrast between the Ellusionest and Daryl’s AC training tapes (DVD).
I can’t say anything negative (or positive) about any Ellusionest product, as I simply have never seen anything they have done. However, since I tend to like the flexibility of an AC routine and you give such a good review of the product, I may just have to break down and try this in DVD format.

I personally like the Ellusionist products. It's just that I do not like that much some other products of theirs. I like Ninja 1!

Yeah Ellusionist was one of the first sites that helped me get into magic believe it or not. I'm planning on getting the ellusionist's version of the ACR on dvd. I was all set on Daryl's too, but I'll still probably get it once I get enough funds.

Is the new AC DVD mentioned on his site? I didn't see it there.

Yeah. I think that Ellusionist is not as bad as many people say. The first thing that I bought from them is the Inside Magic DVD, and I was satisfied with it. It's pretty good. The price is right too, but I do think that some of their other products are over-priced.

I agree that many of their product are overpriced, and for Ninja 1, you will not learn one handed pass as Brad said in commercial ad.
However, it is not a bad place for magic beginners to learn magic. Otherwise, they will never know there are so many gems in other places. I believe that after years of comments about previous products, ellusionist now become aware that they need to credited to inventors and have their product quality that similar to price they set. Why? Because during the past few months, many magic retailers on-line promote themselves by executing mass sales discount.

I own both videos and I too have to agree with Kronos.
By the way Kronos, aren't you the Moderator on Ellusionist forums? |

I have been pretty outspoken about Ellusionist as many know. And no, I never made a post like "Brad sucks," they were well thought out.
But...as I'm not a big Ambitous Car fan, this video does interest me as I've heard really good things about it. Also in the last 6 months, I've have taken heat about Expert Magic and took a step back and realized after a while I had closed myself off to even the thought of Ellusionist. Which, to be honest for me, was very out of character, and I realized I truly wasn't being fair. I still stand by my post and thoughts about their first products but, as I hope Expert Magic will, it seems Brad and his team are trying their best at truly bringing out some good products; which, all I can say is GREAT! I suggest for others that were like me to wait for this to come out and and give it a chance, because if it's half as good from what Brad and others say (of course, all from those within Ellusionist), it will be worth it to give it a look. As someone else has said, this might be the one I buy. Michal Mystic |

Ian_B : Yes I am, but that doesn't stop me from telling the truth. If there was something I didn't like about ellusionist, I am granted the freedom to say so, as long as I say it constructively. Nobody gets anywhere based solely on negativity, and I firmly believe that if I have something important to say, then I should be objective enough to look at it from all angles. I speak very honestly when I say that I am thrilled with this video. As I said before, Brad himself has learned a lot from the school of hard knocks (also known as "critical magicians" *grin*), when it comes to putting stuff together.
For one single routine on the Ambitious, Daryl's routine is INCREDIBLY strong. But as I said before, it is only HIS handling, and is rigid. Without that ending, you have just a plain vanilla ambitious card video, and for that, you might as well have gotten it out of a book. The AC that ellusionist is about to release, doesn't have the same killer ending that Daryl's has, which is OK, because in my eyes, the two don't compete with each other, I actually think they compliment each other. However, the meat of the video, is where it's at it's best. There is enough there, to give you enough variety, that you have the freedom to use the information given to structure your own routine, to suit your needs. It's almost like the 3 Card Monte Darly has. There is enough information there to last a lifetime. (I thought there was TOO much information, it was a little overwhelming.) However, using all the bits and pieces from the various methods, you can put together your own, so that it suits you, and is not quite what everyone else is doing. The same thing, in my eyes applies to the ambitious card. There is enough out there, to make quite a few routines, but at the same time, everyone's handling will be different. Having the seeds of ideas planted, gives a person a boost that sometimes, they just don't get themselves. Hold off until the preview page is available. They will soon be putting up a page that will contain a preview video, and based up on (I hope, I haven't seen it yet), you might be able to judge for yourselves whether this is something that you can benefit from. Myself, I use videos, mostly as a reference to see what something looks like when I learn it for myself. Having a few different videos on the same subject can onyl help me. Learning something from more than one source, only assures me that I won't be a complete "cookie cutter magician". David. MichalMystic: There is NOTHING wrong with being critical, as long as, (like you said), it's done in a construcive manner, and is informed. There are a lot of magicians that I have met online, as well as offline, who have not only spewed ignorance when I talk to them, but also refuse to listen to someone who comes from the inside. I am amazed it's been over 2 years since ellusionist's inception, and if you look at how far they've come, it's impressive. Most people would have been cowed a long time ago over some of the things that have been said and done, but they've taken these things, and used them to make themselves better and more quality driven. Nothing wrong with that. I've also seen a lot of people come around, and change their way of thinking, or at least their method of expression of those thoughts. Glad to hear your comments. (Now if I can only get those darned Ninja Rings to work!) David. |

I hate to come back to be negative, but I doubt very much you have the freedom to say anything negative. Any so-called bad posts I made were very well thought out and never on their own forums.
When on their forums, I was always helpful and respectful to others but...Brad and his team searched me out on other forums and banned me because of posts I had made on other forums. To me, this is just like witch hunting, going around to all the forums, and if some doesn't like your stuff, you ban them. I've also revived very silly emails from them preaching to me about this and that, when in the end they had to admit they were wrong like accusing me of trading their videos. If I still have one thing to say about Brad and his team, is that at the time they seemed very childish to me and didn't realize that any post I made about them or anything else was to try and help others by giving my opinion (bad or good), which Brad and his team seem to feel I didn't have the right to do. Now you ask, if I didn't like there stuff why was I on their forums? Very simple, because not many talk about the products; they talk about magic and it's a very active forum. This has been my number 1 problem with the company. As I've received heat about my own effect, I never went around and banned guys bad mouthing me or my effect and certainly would never ban them from Expert Magic forums, unless on "OUR" forums they handle themselves in a unproper manner. But as I have said, I've an open mind to Ellusionist and hope they bring out some great stuff. |

I recalled something when reading the following sentence, Michal.
What I've recalled ? The thread of posts found in Genii Forum regarding Brad's call-up for his fans to defend for him ....... ha ... =========================================== "If I still have one thing to say about Brad and his team is that at time they seem very childish to me ...." |

No.. I think I can be as critical as I want, if the need arises, but like I said, it's the way you word it, not what you say.
There is a difference between "this stinks", and "I didn't like it that much, and here is why....". I am ALWAYS careful about what I say online, and you will find that everything I write, contains my opinions, from both sides of the fence. You may be right as to the how far I can go, but I am allowed to disagree with Brad. *grin* Somethings are done without me being party to them, and something I am involved in. That's all I can say. However, I get the feeling that you really don't harbour that many hard feelings, otherwise you'd be all over me here. Have you tried explaining your point of view? If you want back in (now, that's really up to you... ), I could always go to bat for you. If you explained to him, what you just said to me, then I am sure something might happen. Either way.. we could go on about this for eons... let me know if you think it's worth pursuing. And I must say.. It's been very nice talking to everyone here. David. |

So, to satisfy my curiousity, have they started crediting yet? I really can't take them seriously or even begin to open my mind to them being a quality company until they do.

they have credited, but that is not the problem.
They do not get permission from the creators of sleights / effects to publish them and make money off them. that is the trouble. Just think, if you steal someone's routine like deep astonishment or blizzard or whatever and then put the exact same trick on the market with your own "hip" new name, charge more than the original, and at the end of the video put a small credit, it doesn't make it right. |
