In the 80's Paul Daniels vanished a real elephant on his TV show outdoors, in daylight, from inside a tent. In the middle of a field. I believe it's a German invention. Anyone any tips?

Hi Opus,
Great tip! That really says it all!!! ;-) To Harry, Are you intenting such illusion or do do simply wanna know? If my last guess hits the twelve, all I have to say to you is: Be glad you don´t know! Be happy to still have secrets in magic you´re blown off from! A.Lien |

I find it really funny that the person who is asking this question is Harry H, since the first performance of this I know of was by Harry Houdini. As to how it was done, Harry was quoted as saying "Even the elephant does not know how it is done." There is a possible answer, however, in The Secrets of Houdini, by J.C. Cannell.

"Houdini's Vanishing Elephant, Based On Marrit's Patent And Jarret's Description". You can find info on this illusion in Jim Steinmeyer's book TWO LECTURES on theatrical illusion. I just picked it up this week for a new project. But it does discuss the elephant illusion. Good Luck,

Jim Steinmeyer's book TWO LECTURES on theatrical illusion.
I have this book and it's very informative about mirror illusions. I haven't read the whole book yet. I only read through some sections. There's a section about mirrors that I always read. You will be surprised how mirrors can be used in alot of unique ways. |

Always think "basic" and if you have a basic knowledge you already know. I've seen the basic principle in many old magic books and side show stuff ... almost goes back to Reginald Scott. Bryan
Oh sure, I can spell "Antidisestablishmentarianism", but I can't type t-h-e.
