Does anyone have any suggestions for a way to force the number "3" without any props (except possibly pen and paper to do the calculations... but I would prefer to avoid that)?
I realize there are numerous equations that could lead to it but I'm looking for the most direct way to get there (other than "think of the number three"). Obviously the more deceptive it is the better, but currently I simply tell them to think 3 and the effect still plays well... so it's not paramount. But, I believe, if the number was something they think I couldn't have known in advance, something THEY chose, then it'll be a better effect. Looking forward to some answers- plus I'll be trolling through Juan's new book and Stewart James... Ben

I strongly recommend Ted Annemann's '202 Methods of Forcing', available as a $2.00 ebook from lybrary.com:

Divide an index card into 3 pieces. On the first write the #1 on the front and #6 on the back.Next piece #2[front] and #5[back].Third piece #3 and #6.Have the guest mix them up,and eliminate one piece by handing it to you.Have them total the digits on their two remaining pieces.
As 'innocently' as possible ask them if the total is a two digit number?[it will alway's be 14]After they respond affirmatively ask them to subtract the smaller digit from the larger.[4-1=3 ] This is just a paper version of the old pinch the die[dice]force.Come to think of it,with these three innocent pieces of card you could also force [14,5,or4].IMHO,my suggested paper version is more deceptive than the dice version, and it packs flat..lol. Nice catch! Thank-you Chris.
I actually thought of this while semi-asleep at 2AM....so I jumped up and posted it.[lest I fall into REM sleep and forget it] BTW... this 'semi-asleep state', for me, is a very creative time as long as I consciously 'plant' a problem or enigma in my mind upon retiring. I would love to hear from other's who have experienced similar limbo state revelations. BTW,this number principle can also be expanded beyond the 1 thru 6 restrictions of a die. Happy trails. Rich |

Ask somebody to think of a whole number between 2 and 4

The magician had three 3"x 3"cards but the first was numbered #1 on the front and #2 on the back. The second card has #3 on the front and #4 on the back. Finally the third card had the #5 on the front and #6 on the back. Remember I REALLY liked the force but cannot remember how it works. I believe the magician said it was either the creation of Gardner, Fulves, or Goldstein. Anyone recognize this and can point me to it's printed source? Help? Thanks in advance.

Barrett_James, I remember seeing something like what you're describing "a few years ago" at Caesar's Magical Empire in Las Vegas, where there was a holographic video of Max Maven instructing visitors to write those numbers on three piece of paper, then to select one piece and turn it over, and then to add together the three numbers in view. That sounds way too obvious to be entertaining, so either I'm forgetting something important, or Max added a whole lot of prsentation....
