Just got an e-mail from Bob Kohler, Steve Spill's Mindreading Goose is about to be released. It's been a long time in the making. Bob's site is still being updated, so you need to e-mail Bob at bobkohler@cox.net for ordering info. This will surely sell out quickly. I'm making a trip out to LA next week, so of course I'll be stopping by Magicopolis. Maybe Steve will include it in his show. (hint, hint)

What can you tell us about the routine, Ken?

I have this routine on an OLD VHS tape. It did seem to play well.

Think of the fake duck that David Copperfield used in his act YEARS ago. It is just like that. Matter of fact they used to sell the duck in a large and small size, anyway with duck under your arm and a note pad in the other hand you seem to be set. Then you place a pair of sunglasses on the duck (looks funny) and a short pencil in the ducks mouth.

You ask a spectator to think of a number and the MIND READING DUCK will read their mind! And write the number down. After a little by-play the duck writes a number. You then ask the spectator for the number and when you turn the pad around the number matches.

Steve Spill has been one of the magic world's most creative forces.

Here's Steve's brilliant 'Mind Reading Goose':

I hope Bob doesn't mind, but here's the description from his e-mail...

The first release is Steve’s legendary routine “The Mindreading Goose”. This routine is really funny, very visual and is the most requested routine in Steve’s deep list of routines. The plot is this: Geyser the Mindreading Goose reads spectators minds. Sounds impossible because it is! But what sells this routine to the audience is the entertainment value that’s packed into the routine. They roar with laughter and grin until it hurts.

The Goose is NOT REAL. This is important as who wants to deal with real farm animals. But it looks real! The Goose is a puppet that has taken us years to perfect and manufacture. In fact, each puppet is meticulously hand-made! We started with Steve’s original design and worked together to improve the puppet until it was perfect. The dream is now over, we’ve perfected the new Geyser and couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. The materials are the highest quality to provide years of service. The beak and feet are custom-made leather. The body design allows the performer to custom fit the goose to their needs. The materials are easily cleaned and maintained for continued service.

So what does Geyser actually do? He does a lot. First, Geyser reads minds by writing his answers on a pad with a Sharpie. You’ve got total control over his head movements. The good news is you don’t have to be a professional level puppeteer to operate Geyser. Nothing could be easier you’ll master all of the functions in minutes.

Second, Geyser has a secret. He pees on command. That’s right he pees when you want him to. This allows the performer to set up one of the funniest sight gags you’ll ever see. It never fails to get a thunderous reaction from the crowd.

Here’s the set up. Steve asks an audience member to think of any letter in the alphabet. Suddenly Geyser “let’s go” and pees BIG TIME. Huge laugh…

Steve’s response is “Are you thinking of the letter P?” A second huge laugh. It’s impossible for me to convey just how funny and surprising this section of the routine is. I’ve watched Steve do this routine a zillion times and it never fails to elicit an INCREDIBLE reaction.

So who needs this routine? Any stand-up performer that needs six minutes of hilarious material that is already completely honed by thousands of performances.

If you use Steve’s script word for word the laughs and applause will follow.

“The Mindreading Goose” can easily play in any situation from parlor-sized audiences to thousands on stage. The props and necessary materials are lightweight and easy to transport. It’s a professional performers dream. It’s definitely the one routine that will set you apart in your market!

Steve and I have gone to great lengths to teach each and every aspect of “The Mindreading Goose”. The training DVD contains 3 live performances, not 1, not 2 but 3! The first show is a live Television show shot in 1988. The second show is a Comedy Club show shot in 1998. And the final show was shot a few months ago at Magicopolis. The routine is absolutely timeless.

After the shows Steve goes through every minute detail. Nothing is left out. He covers all of the technical details, the props, the strategy, the timing. The training was shot in HD at the studios of Bob Kohler Magic so you know the training is top-flight.

“The Mindreading Goose” comes complete with everything you need to do many, many shows. You also receive performance rights. You can perform “The Mindreading Goose” anywhere, even on television.

So you get it all, including television performance rights. This will only be available in limited numbers, so contact Bob quickly if you're interested.

The youtube clip is just a small portion of the routine, there so much more to it. Very funny routine, and as I mentioned earlier, you get it all..

I've been waiting for this a long time....while not inexpensive, especially with our low Canadian dollar at this time, still I hope I'll have the only Spill version around here and if it helps to secure even a couple of shows, it will have paid for itself..... Don Stevenson (Ireland)

I used to have one of the mindreading geese (actually just the puppet) and LOVED it. Wish he'd had the peeing feature, though. I'd probably buy this! And I love the creativity (and the apparent danger) that lives in the mind of Steve Spill!

This one was also ripped off by Mel Mellers in his recent DVD's where he teached it... I believe this will be rather pricey, but for workers whose act this fits it will be well worth the money. However, the bigger problem in my mind will be to find the performers who personality allows to use something like this and not feel out of place.

WOW... putting a "signature piece" on the market. I hope anyone that gets this gives it their best effort. I remember seeing Steve do this and said, "this is worth gold to a performer... it's magical and packed with fun."

The Goose is a bullet proof 'commando' act that scores laughs, is memorable and unique, and delivers a powerful magic effect at the same time. What could be better than that?? Thanks Steve.

Does anyone know if the DVD will be sold seperately?I own what looks to be the same goose as in the You Tube clip[same size, leather beak and feet, with the same movement] I also have the smaller duck version.
I have mostly used these in walk around situations. From a short distance, and with natural movement some folks believe they are real.

Of course mine doesn't 'P'. lol

Steves routine sounds wonderful.

Hi Gang,
I'm officially sending out the offer e-mail tonight! Steve Spill's Mindreading Goose is certainly one of Steve's signature pieces. The release is much more than what most magicians realize. The method is extremely well thought out. The release will contain all of Steve's work and some major improvements.

A big part of the value of the release is the performance rights that the purchaser gets. The script is protected. Included are international television rights as well. In the current world environment many people feel that if they see something they have the right to perform it. This is not the case.

The Mindreading Goose will only be released as an entire package that includes everything you need for many performances.

If you'd like to get all of the facts send an e-mail to me at bobkohler@cox.net. I expect we'll soon be in a reservation situation. I only sent the offer to a few people due to my schedule and the first run is almost completely spoken for...

We will be able to manufacture the props in a timely fashion though so hopefully we'll be able to keep up with the demand.

The Mindreading Goose is legendary. Don't forget Steve's definitive handling of the classic Needle Swallowing act "Confessions of a Needle Swallower" will soon follow. I'm going to start taking preorders in the next few days. Details will follow. Folks on the mailing list will get first crack. The good news is this product is much less expensive but it's another Spill Classic.

It was a joy working with Steve, I predict many more of his best routines will be coming out in the future.

I for one have seen Steve perfume this to OUTSTANDING response time and time again… it kicks behind every time! While touring across Canada and part of the U.S., (This was BEFOR Murray Hatfield had that tour. [which he still does to this day!] Actually, HE was a “guest” on the show that year with Brenda Fox… interesting, eh’?)

I will tell you this, Steve slayed audience of every description… every time! (Young, Old… what-ever!) There was NEVER anything less than a killer, laugh-out-loud response! It ROCKED!

I wanted to steal it back then in the early 80’s when he killed with is so constantly! (and many years well into the 70’s before that I’m sure when skinny ties were in style! Uh Boye! - Hehehehe!)

If were a less ethical man, I would have stolen it like other well-known magicians did! (Sad… that even the ‘stars’ of our industry don’t hold intellectual creative property rights in reverent esteem till someone tries to steal from THEM… ‘then’ watch-out! What do they call that; “Situational Ethics?” - SAD, but another subject altogether indeed as Bob said.)

Anyway… any time we can get into the proven and creative (and in this case delightfully twisted!) mind of such and enduring, long-lasting pro such as Steve is a true treat-indeed!

Keep me in the loop!

I first saw Steve do this routine at his Brook Farm Inn of Magic back around 1980, and it would have people FALLING DOWN LAUGHING. This is such a standout, signature piece, It still cracks me up FROM MEMORY, nearly 30 years later. I'll say that again. It still stands out in my memory, after 30(ish) years, from a venue that offered Steve, Bob Sheets, Scotty York and others all doing their "A list" stuff.
I'm glad this is only being offered as a package, so it's not being blown out for the price of a DVD. This may help keep it in the hands of people who will give it the respect it deserves. This is SERIOUS Comedy.

The thing is I don't undertsand why anyone would want to perform this by using all Mr Spill's lines, surely it was a magical peice of comedy that only Mr Spill should perform.

I could understand if someone want to purchase the 'puppet' for their own take on it but to buy the whole script, wont this just end up with a number of performers 'tring' to re-create a wonderfull peice of performance art?

I am affraid that it is out of my price range and would just rather watch Mr Spill perform it in the way which he does!

My feeling is that anyone who can make a success out of Invisible Deck, Cut/Restored Tie, Silk to Egg, Seabrook Wallet, etc... can kill with the goose, especially if you play it straight and only react to the Goose.

Plus the Goose has some exclusivity to it.

Sometimes less is more, I don't think anyone needs to be funny with the Goose, the Goose is funny and amazing. The performer is Dick Smothers and the goose is Tommy Smothers.

The thing I love about this act is that the misdirection is SO STRONG! All the heat is on the goose. The routine is genius. It has built in laughs and misdirection. I WILL be purchasing this!!!!!!!

That was what a reviewer from the LA Times called me after seeeing one of my performances in the parlor room at Magicopolis circa 1999. I used that in my publicity fo a while.
Steve was kind enough to allow me to use his signature routine at Magicopolis when I began working there quite a few years ago. Like any perfomer, I instinctively added and changed the routine to fit my own persona. Let me tell you, it felt great knowing I had a killer routine that had a proven track record of garnering big laughs.
Strong comedy plus strong magic should be the goal of anyone calling themselves a comedy magician. This routine is perfect in that regard.

the fact is that all lot of performers, even professional ones, "borrowed" his presentation and lines from this piece. For all those who want to continue to do so, and others who wanted to, but felt it was not right, steve and bob now offer an legit way do to so.

Moonrazor, I just to a look at the YouTube someone put up and I think you're right, it does look like there's an edit. That tape was from a Magic Castle TV special that aired 25 years or more ago, it was a multiple camera shoot, I wasn't the director or editor and wasn't consulted in post.

In fact, I don't know if the edit was done in post or the director switched cameras during the live shoot, but here is my educated guess, IF it was done in post production: That was the most clear shot of the number, maybe the master shot missed the number, maybe it got a clear shot of the number but a light glared on the white paper obscuring the number, or any one of a dozen technical issues or glitches, etc... pre digital even a small scratch on a tape before it was even used could render it beneath broacast standards.

If it was done live, all I can say is that even today, TV directors who shoot magic shows, as most of you know, are notorious for switching shots at precisely the worst time for the trick. Although in this case it looks pretty good, I had to look at it a couple times to even notice there was an edit.

Probably the most notable editing on that piece, as someone noted earlier, is that a couple minutes of by-play and the pee bit were edited, to my surprise at the time. The show was broacast on CBS broadcast and when I asked the producers, was told that "standards and practices" required the edit because the show aired during the primetime family hour.

Nowadays TV is a little looser, they probably would have rerun the edited stuff five times in slow motion. To see the full routine get my 10 Years of Steve Spill DVD. On the instructional DVD that comes with the Mindreading Goose there are three live performances of the full routine each from different venues and decades. The most recent was taped about a month ago here at Magicopolis.
