Wish others had the same sense as you Dan. I luv this effect and wanted it badly, but the exposure on this thread and sooooo many people doing and chatting publicly about it killed off my desire. The whole routine was perfect. I wish Bob had a non discloseure on this as he has with other effects

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about overexposure. I remember this same sort of talk way back when I got Mike Caveney’s Linking Coat Hangers, which I still do, and still gets a great reaction. In my experience, working primarily for adults, I don’t see that any magic routine is generally known by the public.
. Ask people in any audience, or random folks you meet anywhere, if they have ever heard of Spill or the Mindreading Goose? Ask hundreds of them, and I bet not a single one will know what you’re talking about. It is so easy to make this yours forever by just getting out there and doing it and the more you do it, the more your delivery and unique bits will build on the foundation until it fits like a glove. I would much rather start with something unique like the Goose or Coat Hangers than something that really is generally known to the public like the Torn/Restored Newspaper or Cut/Restored Rope. But that’s just me, and frankly even those tricks when done well still go over great. I think sometimes, because we are magicians and know who invented certain things we can easily get hung up on that when the public have no idea and hardly see any magic ever, they are just out to have a good time. Right or wrong, that’s what I think. |

Hi Doug,
I wasn't aware that there was someone else other than Don who performed it around here. Either way, I just want to clarify that my decision has nothing to do with thinking it's over-exposed, or not wanting to over-expose it. It is just out of respect. You guys are at the top, while I'm still breaking ground. I've been doing more shows lately, but I still only do it part time due to my other obligations. However, that is slowly changing. I've mostly been doing Gospel Shows, but I'm wanting to get into doing secular shows as well. I am currently looking at purchasing a large stage illusion to add to both my secular and Gospel magic show. Peter Loughran has been nice enough to help me figure out what would suit my style the best. I've been leaning towards the ACCUMULATOR. I sure hope no one around here has that one.

Please do not buy the Mindreading Goose. If you already own a Mindreading Goose please do not perform it. It is my ultimate goal to be the one and only Mindreading Goose performer on the face of the Earth. I desperately need your help to achieve this goal. My life depends on it. And Gospel Dan, I claim exclusive performance rights at all Gospel and secular shows for the Accumulater, whatever that is.

I've never done any Gospel shows. I don't know what a secular show is. I don't know what an accumulater is. Me and my goose will be cashing in on camps this summer. Sorry Lebowski, you will never reach your ultimate goal.

I'm sure Takeachance's post that he wished the Goose required a signed legal document like the Blades is sincere. But I don't see how it makes a difference. I think that price limits sales more than any document, and no document will limit immitation, only ethics does that. Some have honor and respect for fellow magicians, some don't. When that Englishman put the Goose on dvd and claimed it as his own word quickly got around and the dvd was recalled and reissued without the Goose. Not pleasant or inexpensive and whatever was earned initially was lost in money and respect. That's says to me that with or without a legal document, eventually what goes around comes around. When something is good magicians want to do it and I think price is the most effective way to limit sales. Maybe the Goose should be priced higher?

Make it $5000, I have an original copy of the "Englishman's" rendition of the goose. I'll sell you a pirate copy for just $500, and the props only cost a few hundred. That way, you can have the goose routine, saving several hundred dollars, and I'll be laughing all the way to the bank!
Don't you just love piracy? Potty |

I'm of course only referring to my local area, and local fellow magicians.
I too believe in, "What comes around, goes around", but we should all hold to some level of ethics and integrity regardless. There are some very good to great magicians in my area, and one very talented mentalist. Their toe's are easy to step on, but their shoes are hard to fill.

Interesting thought dan.
Why do you want to fill their shoes ? You don't want to be yourself ? About the mindreading goose or any others effect, if you like it and think it will be great in you show I don't understand why you don't buy it. It's now a marketing effect, not something private to a specific magician. Myself, I don't care about what others people do, I do what I like, that's it and it's nothing to do with selfish, it's about to think like a professionnal and an artist. If I think the goose fit my character and my show, I buy it, that's it.

There are many effects and routines that I can choose from. You see, I do care what other people do. I can think and act like a professional and an artist, and still hold true to myself.

I have a big problem with what I was charged for my Goose.
It was way too little. The thinking and creativity and presentation make this a great deal. The attention to detail and quality of the hand-manufacturing are superb and when I do it normal people react even better than an L&L audience. In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve met Spill and seen his Magicopolis show many times. Other than that, I have nothing to do with Spill, Kohler, or sales of the Goose, and I am not compensated in any way. I simply have had great success with the Goose and continue to post so others will know about it. |

The value of any routine to a performer should be judged by it's ability to meet many professional level criteria. How strong is the reaction? Is it memorable? Is it a reputation maker? Is the routine practical?
Does it fool everybody? No doubt Steve's routine is a modern classic at this point. I can tell you that quite a few top pros have mentioned that they would have purchased an exclusive IF we had offered it. I see a lot of stage shows and acts and when I watch them many times the routine that kills is not the big $10,000 illusion but a standup routine that in between two high priced illusions. I can give you many examples. Rick Thomas does a fantastic show. Every chunk is great. But the routine I hear the most about is his version of Watch To Box. Why...it's really funny and totally impossible. I think this is the formula. Our buddy Kozak, who's show is a MUST SEE was ready to kill me for not giving him a chance to negotiate an exclusive deal for "The Goose". Of course Paul is using Geyser as a featured part of his show and if you read this entire thread you'll find he's shared some really great ideas with everybody. So the answer is don't send us more money (unless you're filthy rich..the truth is Steve and I would both like to be adopted by someone who can afford to take care of us). But if you're considering paying thousands of dollars for a new illusion maybe you should reconsider and get The Mindreading Goose instead. It won't break the bank or your back. |

My goose has a slight problem with his urinary tract, I think. He tends to leak some prior to the show (after he's drunk water) and also before the ostensive thought of letter "P" by the audience member. I've used the suggested Q-tip but the drip is still there as the cotton on the Q tip seems to become to wet to stop the flow. I've used masking tape and the more thoroughly it is used the more impairing it is at the magic moment. Any vets out there with suggestions?
Not trying to spoil the atmosphere of this thread... |

Here's what Kozak posted as an answer a few pages back: Only put enough water to fill the bulb, not the entire tube. Fluff the Q-Tip by reverse rolling it between your fingers, by being fluffed you can get a tighter fit. Keep the Goose's head tipped slightly forward to keep the water in the bulb. No problems at all. That's the "Finesse" on keeping a Goose from peeing prematurely! Ahhh The Art of Magic, Koz

I'm currently playing with my own solution to the problem. I'm not really into tipping methods to other effects (so I won't) - but the one hint I will give you is to check out the effect titled 'Flow'.
It takes some experimentation to get 'Flow' right, but it's rock solid. No leaks whatsoever. And once you know the secret to 'Flow' - the "refills" are widely available for not much money at all. |

I have found that a small 1/2 inch piece of air tubing from a fish tank inserted into the opening prevents drips and gives you a finer stream. You can block the end with a small ball of magicians wax, but if you have a small enough diameter tube it is not necessary.
Any questions about the goose and/or it's care and upkeep I will be happy to answer via e-mail or PM. If you've ever wondered what that little "A" imprint on the inside leg of each goose was, it stands for Alexander. I build each goose from scratch in my workshop, so I know them inside and out. Quack, quack.... |
