Hey guys,
So I was just wondering about some "think of a card" ideas.. and I know there's the trick that cannot be explained.. but what are some ways that you could end an effect? anyone have any clever ideas? I just can't seem to think of what to do after asking someone to "think" of a card.. I mean.. then what? I know a couple triumph versions that allow for named cards, but to have them think of a card and then continue with the performance? Do you usually say "think of a card".. and then say "what card was it?" lol and then proceed? but again, if it's after they tell you.. then what? what do you guys like to do to end off on something like that? Here's what I've come up with. having them cut to it via breather or break positioning to spell their name wallet find 2 cards that have their suit on 1 and number on other. then add up and their card is at that position. reversed there's more.. but what do you do after you just tell em "think of a card" ? if it's asking to expose too much, then could you kindly direct me to a book or dvd that has a good amount of information on this please? thanks a lot. |

Hi SpringBizKit,
As a suggestion, check out Mr. Mick Ayres' 'Out on a Limb' MickAyresWares.com. If you don't know, Mr. Ayres belongs to our Café. I don't think you will be disappointed. Best regards, Sixten |

I think one thing that would help is if the terms are more strictly defined. In other words, does "think of a card" mean ...
One, "I fan the cards in front of you and think of any one of them ..." or Two, "Think of a card ... now tell everyone what it is." or Three "Think of a card ... don't tell me." Each of these offers a different path. For #1, excuse the plug, but there's a great version of that in my book MonkeyShines Volume One. It's here: http://www.dixonmagic.com -- excuse the commercial. Of course, the literature is full of this think a card stuff. (I'm too lazy to find it on my shelf, but I believe the Magic of Roger Croswaite has a big chunk of this kind of material) If it's #2, then what happens next may depend on what specific card they name (like work with a mem deck) If it's #3, well, that's reverts back to #2 because they are going to have to tell you eventually! Just my 2 cents, DD http://www.dixonmagic.com |

There are a few think a card effects and it depends on the trick how you go about it. Some work by getting the info first and quite a few others use controls after a spectator peeks a card.
The Trick That Cannot Be Explained is more of a prediction than think a card. There is a chapter in "More Inner Secrets of Magic" which is included in Vernon's "Inner Card Trilogy" that deals with think a card effects. |

Thanks guys.
I'm looking for a .. well lets say you want to be impromtu. shuffled deck. you have em think of a card. what would YOU do? would you ask for their thought of card, if they responded what would you do after? what would you do if you told someone to just "think of a card" without showing them anything at all, just free thought. what could you do after? I was just wondering. thanks for the website guys much appreciated. |

First, you will secretly gain control of the card.
Second, you will create dramatic tension that will highlight the revelation you've chosen to do. Then, you will do the revelation. Whew. That was easy. |

This may sound basic but since it hasn't been mentioned looking into the Hofzinser Spread Cull.
Unless you have a table to work with and can apply some of Sadowitz's approaches to finding a named card, the spread cull is the way to go imho. 99% of the time if I don't have the deck in memorized order, I'm giong to spread cull the card to later use for revelation or switch for a prediction, etc. |

It's amazing how powerful the Spread Cull can be. They name a card, spread through, cull to the top, maybe say "I'm not sure if I even have a ____ in this deck." Then you're ready for a revelation as simple as a double lift (not their card) then put the "wrong" card in their hand. Ask again which card they thought of... wave your hand over the card, Boom!
That would be a very basic, but magical, use of the spread cull. From there, let your imagination run free! One tip is to slightly mis-call their card later on, right before the revelation, to make it seem like you barely remember or care which card they named. Then let them correct you. |

My favorite and only "think of a card" trick I do is Kollasal Killer by Kenton Knepper. The spectator is asked to think of a any card and you can immediately pull it out of your wallet. The manuscript is really inexpensive and you don't need a gaffed wallet to do the effect. There are a number of routines that you can do around this effect. Kenton has a supplemental manuscript with a bunch of ideas from other magicians who do the effect. It's the only effect that is always in my wallet. This is NOT a card-to-wallet effect and there are no forces necessary. The wallet can be placed on the table before you begin.

I know people fly into a hizzy when people post advice ignoring the initial request- in this case for an impromptu method- but I HAVE to recommend both learning a stack and checking out Tamariz's work.
Now that I got that out of the way... Vernon, Rosini, Erdnase, ECT. All good places to start.
If you're reading this you're my favourite magician.
Check out www.TorontoMagicCompany.com for upcoming shows, and instagram.com/train.ben for god knows what! |

Hey Ben,
I've already gone through Tamariz's Mnemonica and have the stack down. Already cleared erdnase a few times over.. (course as we know.. no amount of times is enough) I recently got the new vernon revelation and recently went through his chronicles 1-4 and his inner secrets trilogy. I havent checked out rosini though.. well, I did check out the main resources before wondering and posting. I think the only way would be the amount of times I go over them. a few is never enough with the vast amounts of information in these books. Thanks a lot guys will keep up with the hunt |

In your experience, what cards are most commonly said when asked to name/think of a card. Vernon said he always knew the top, bottom and a reversed center card in a deck in his pocket - which gave him 3 possible miracles if a spectator asked for one of those.
I was thinking the other day it would be great to help that idea along by putting often-named cards in those positions. If you had to select 3 cards for that purpose - what would they be? My guess would be ace of spades, queen of hearts and ace of hearts. Your thoughts? |

This is a question that has been asked here several times.
It's been found that magicians often choose differently than laypeople. Your choices area good ones though. |

Harry Lorayne has some work on this in either Personal Secrets or My Favorite Card Tricks... Can't remember which... The idea though allows you to be ready to produce (pretty much) any four of a kind named by the spectator.

Five of salad forks.
Deal with it. need another - oh for pity's sake. Okay let's go with the ace of hubcaps. what? See - told you - I was really thinking of the six of broccoli. Your turn - think of a card.

It's something you learn about in the process of doing magic for real people.
It's two birds sitting on a ladder. It's a bear in a dress waiting on a park bench. Those last two you can find in a movie. My intended lesson here is that you are are much better off starting with the premise that everybody is thinking of something and to isolate one particular person's thought you can have them look at a card and think of that image. That lesson - and some much more advanced thinking is readily available in the card magic of J. N. Hofzinser along other goodies.

Understood, well not at all but I'll follow up with this:
I wonder what 3 cards people say the most in you folks' experience if asked to name a card. I know in MY experience they have been ace of spades, queen of hearts and ace of hearts. I simply wondered if a group consensus would generally agree or have wildly different experiences. I generally do as Vernon did and have those 3 cards in position in the deck. It can be impossibly astonishing to patter about precognition or the like and simply open the pack and reveal. Sure there are a million ways to use psychological forces, culls, etc to accomplish similar effects and not to disregard them whatsoever - I'm simply asking about a method that I use. |
