I think the value of Erdnase isn't in a great technical value (though it has much)
but in the inspiration it can provide.

agreed. there are many good things in the book that aren't directly moves, sleights etc. which is why I omitted it from my list. still a fav though

I'd have to say Closeup Card Magic by Harry Lorayne, Card College series by Roberto Giobbi and Books of Wonder by Tommy Wonder, which is more than just cards.

Right this moment, the books on my desk are

1) Focus
2) Card Classics of Ken Krenzel (been referencing it lately, along with Ingenuities)
3) Strong Magic (just started reading)

Sorry, guess that is 4, not 3. I've been sort of jumping between the Krenzel books.
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

I really think that Erdnase is like a chapel with high priests and sect followers but that it way is out-dated. The fact that the Professor, at the time, didn't have much alternatives doesn't mean that we have this problem. Descriptions there, even in the annotated version, are not very clear and cannot render an effect as well as several DVD of the same move well performed by several performers.
Several magicians of this generation have kept creating things with a much more free spirit. Magic is alive: it's not a Mausoleum. The books I selected are about magic alive.

Good post....some people view it as blasphemy to say anything even mildy crictical of these classic books from the past..even though they are very good...but as Lawrance O points out, these authors did the best they could with the sleights available at the time...but like all things, things move on,change,evolve...not always for the better, but not always for the worst...give me card college any day over the classics books from way way back...even though as I say,I like them...but to some, there untouchable, which I don't agree with.....
Ive upped my standards.Now,up yours!
