Interesting thread. I'm just reading it for the first time even though it's over a year old. This is a typical Café thread. You got the guys who are fishing, the guys who use it and the guys who think the advertising is misleading.
But it's also a commentary on how magicians think. This is really a fantastic effect and worthy of a spot in just about anyone's act - stand-up or close-up. I've use it occasionally in my stand-up act as an opener. But not as is. Education in this business is so important for a performer. When I saw the demo for this I knew immediately what it was because the principle is old. For one thing it's been on the web for years as one of those "let me fool you on my web site" gags. But it's even much older than that. What Sankey did was bring a fresh look to the principle. It's like what Bill Abbott & Richard Sanders did with Powerball 60 and Brian McNeil did with Powerball tickets. Taking the old calculator trick and giving it a new look. But the complaints I've read here and on other forums about this effect are really problems with the performer and not the effect because there is nothing wrong with the effect. Magicians don't know how to look past what is in front of them. As is, this is a fine effect, but by combining a couple of other principles, you have something even better. Again, this is where having an education in the art (beyond the latest & greatest) helps. I don't use the list he provided. I came up with my own and put it into another format which is an every day item (cost me 50 cents). I don't have to switch lists for it to be examined. Every word is different and it's immediately repeatable with a new word. But I'm still using the same math formula described. That seems to be the issue for a lot of magicians. It flies right by the audience. This can be presented as a very strong mentalism piece with the right presentation, but that also requires some experience on the part of the performer. Learn to look past the obvious and understand what the effect is on the audience. The demo shows what the effect is on the audience. It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools. |

I use 99 as is, and get great reactions. It's all about the presentation. Jay's ad states that it includes a special list. It really only has 1 special list, just like the ad states. The other item in the box is just for an extra subtlety, but is really not necessary IMHO. I use the "special list" before the effect, and to do the effect with no problems. It is always ready to go in my wallet . . .
It would really be quite tragic

I think it definitely is a strong effect... BUT the cost is too high! $20.00 for a trick you could make on your own for about $1? Great effect but I would recommend making your own, unless you absolutely need the DVD.

If you read the review you think they can actually think of any two digit number and work from there. Sounds like an awesome trick, no? WRONG!
They have to also add the two digits together and subtract that from the original number. Before I was a magician I figured that trick out. I've watched other professional magicians do it and have people go "Wait, I just... (you know what goes here)" If I had known that would be required there would be a zero percent chance I would have spent five cents on this. I wrote an email complaining to Sankey about this back when I bought it and he wasn't very nice in his response. |

36 minute video. No intrusive music, good sound, light, and video quality. No routine demonstration with or without a real audience is given.
Ad claim: "No fishing WHAT SO EVER" "MERELY THINK OF AN OBJECT" from the list. Self working. Video ad shows numerous object predictions. NOT TRUE. Spectator is require to perform several math processes. You can performed this twice ONLY without repeating. If I had known all of the above I would not have bought 99. My belief is Jay Sankey was deliberately misleading to increase sales. It does work. Just not in the manner presented. This is the last time Jay Sankey gets a purchase from me. I don't believe anyone was fishing last six pages, just a simple yes or no answer was needed. YES - the spectator is required to perform math operation several times. YES - Sankey mentions (on the 99 DVD) a previously version of his using a list of names. |

I’d already made the decision back in Feb 2009 when Christopher Kavanar (Review King) posted this, not to purchase, but thanks for the confirmation.
