What ever happened to him? And who was/is he? I recall an old video tape of him lecturing and I still perform several of the effects. But it would be great to know more about him.

Fr. Cyprian H Murray, OFM.Cap. (order of Francis Minor, Capuchin) was president of the SAM back in 1989-90, a magician, lecturer, trick creator, and magic author. I believe he served a Roman Catholic parish in Conn. Met him once many years ago. I think he is still living, but don't know for sure.

I saw Father Cyp at NEMCON two years ago. He was doing okay, but he is not in the best of health. I don't think the reaper has claimed him yet, so he is fighting the good fight, both with and without playing cards.

My favorite quote from him:

"Hofzinser said that card tricks are the poetry of magic. I believe he was right, but there certainly is a lot of doggerel."

I showed him Daniel Garcia's "Tricycle." The look on his face as he saw "Bicycle" change into "Three of Clubs" was absolutely marvelous. The cool thing about that trick is that everyone sees something that isn't actually there.

I sat and talked with Cyp at this year's NEMCON. He is still puttering along though he has slowed down quite a bit.

He did release a number of videos years ago through Videonics. I don't think
they've been put onto DVD's.

Frank Garcia put out a book on his magic titled "THE ELEGANT CARD MAGIC OF FATHER CYPRIAN". Softbound, 1980, 80 pages, around 17 Cyprian card effects.

I bought mine from The Browser's Den of Magic in Toronto. Effective card magic with unbelievable illustrations by Richard Kaufman. I snatched it up as soon as I saw it. It's a gem.

I just saw Fr. Cyp earlier today. He's looking good and says it's the best he's felt in years. And yes, he is working on a book, although he says with a chuckle he's been working on it for 20 years........

I met Fr. Cyprian when I was in the monastery in Garrison, New York many years ago. He taught me a lot about magic and having a certain style with people.

I have an autographed copy of his book "Stand Up Close" (you are Magic #8). I have emailed him from the SAM website but have not heard from him in a long time. He was instrumental in my desire to write my book on using magic in crime prevention themes many years ago.

I remember the shows he did for the friars during the time I was there. It was an honor to be in the presence of such a great magician. I loved one of his masses when he did a trick to explain the context of his homily.

He is with the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of New York/New England. I don't know if they have a website or not, but I am going to check it out now.

I had the privilege of having him as my "Tannen's Magic Camp" chaperon more than one summer back in the late 1970's and early 1980's, what a wonderful guy.

He was at NEMCON in March this year and seemed to have memory intact and alert while talking to Bob Fitch.

I recall that about 35 years ago, when I was just starting in magic, I was sitting with Harvey Rosenthal at his kitchen table, when the phone rang. It was Father Cyprian, I was duly impressed.

I, too, was at the Tannen's Camp back in '75-'79, and this thread reminded me of Fr. Cyprian. And just today I was looking at an old Genii from 1979 and was reminded that Herb Zarrow was among the lecturers. I'd give anything to go back and do that all again.

Here is another thought by Father Cyprian quoted from his book THE ELEGANT CARD MAGIC OF FATHER CYPRIAN (Pg.80) "Magic does not exist in the mechanics of an effect. It exists somewhere between you and the mind of the spectator. We handle the mechanics and present them to the mind and emotions of the spectator. He reacts and the illusion is born. That is magic.
