The money making/money raising thing started as a scam in the early twentieth century, well before WWII. Turning $20 bills into hundreds, or plain paper into $1 bills or $5 bills, etc. The methods for the con, touting special equipment and/or special processes, varied.
I am not sure when the magic trick apparatus was first marketed. |

Can the 'cheap' roller type from Royal Magic change more than one bill?

I have quite a few money makers from the stage size down to the Royal type double roller that is included in many magic sets. I prefer the flat model with the roller as it looks more like a printer vs the Delben style that uses a blotter. Blotters are used to blot not print although it is nice to have one on your desk. I have a flat model made in Germany which is of excellent quality. There is a copy of that which is inferior in that the roller is all plastic and, on mine anyway, the roller doesn't lock after you have printed the bill. I saw a Magic Makers version listed on Amazon for $36 bucks and thought I would give it a shot. It is superb and is identical to the German make. Metal rollers and metal stops on the end. Works great at a very good price point. Highly recommended! I've found that even though Magic Makers have received a lot of flack for allegedly ripping off the inventions of others that most of their products are of very good quality.

the reason was I had no shoes. Until I met upon the street a man who had no feet. |

Interesting that you mentioned Magic Makers. I recently acquired a brass card clamp sold by them and for the price, it is quite flimsy. A card clamp should be a rugged tool--not delicate like this model. The Nielsen card clamp is infinitely superior, and if Norm made one large enough for tarot cards, I would have purchased it from him instead. |

While this is a thread nearly as old as the method itself -
I believe the first patent for the two roller effect was from 1891 (with a rather pleasing illustration): Alois Miklas (Austria-Hungary) https://patents.google.com/patent/US453201A/en And a variant in 1909: Frank L Oleson https://patents.google.com/patent/US927748A/en And a variant in 1923: Fred R Densmore, Christian H Kessler - https://patents.google.com/patent/US1473214A/en The flat plate effect with a stationary roller was 1905: William Horrocks https://patents.google.com/patent/US783203A/en And with a moving roller 1954: Schuyler Reynolds, Ulysses Frederic Grant https://patents.google.com/patent/US2694571A/en |

Just a nice anecdote to the topic.
About 40 years ago in the german comic "YPS" they had a gimmick in every edition. One was the famous "Money Print Machine" Click here to view attached image.
Knock knock...
